Can I wear this Satin Dress to a Wedding. Husband says no. I feel stunning in it, and think it is ok to wear.

Opinion needed. I got gifted this dress for Christmas it's a bit tight as it is my pre baby size, but it somehow makes me look smaller than I am.

It is cinched on my waist and then flows into a fitted skirt. I feel confident in it. I feel like me again. I have been desperate to wear it since I got it but we never go out.

It's my husband's best friend's wedding in February. He is one of the best men. I am not in the wedding so I wont be in any of the pictures or anything like that.

Husband isn't happy about me wearing it. Is it reasonable to wear it? I never go out and I think we will be having another baby by the end of the year so I wont get another chance to wear this beautiful dress. I also dont want to go out and buy another dress when I have been gifted this one and it is sitting in my wardrobe.

It is white at the bottom but clearly with the black lace top it is not a wedding dress. Be honest please.

ADEL

Classic. Commanding. Effortless. The ADEL Lace and Satin Halter Gown is an ode to contrast. Delicate lace meets liquid satin in a silhouette that celebrates form. A plunging halter neckline frames the décolletage, its stretchy lace bodice tied effortle...

For a wedding - NO

Am I the only one who thinks the dress is hideous? And that you would have to be a model in order to wear it?

No, I agree - it's horrible! It doesn't even look nice on the very slim model.

HisNotHes · 16/01/2026 08:27

Only if you wear a blazer type of jacket with it (feb is freezing after all). Otherwise far too revealing for a wedding (read attention-seeking). Also the satin-y white skirt part is a bit bridal which is a no-no as a wedding guest

Alittlefrustrated · 16/01/2026 08:28

YABU
Too revealing ++++
Too white
Too black
Too Look at. Me me me
Too "evening wear"
Too tight according to your OP.
Why don't you compromise with DH and say you won't wear it but he has to arrange a lovely opportunity for you to do so and feel fab.

Agree it looks like a nightgown. I actually don’t like the dress, the black and white cut in the middle like that gives it more of a skirt and top look to the eye - which doesn’t work well with the two polar tones.

Still it’s 80% white satin. To someone else’s wedding that’s criminal, even if you did forgive the tight, plunging cut of it.

Yeah it looks like lingerie or a sexy night gown. What kind of a MIL knows her DIL's body, breasts shape and elasticity, stomach and thighs so well to know if she would wear this to boost her confidence? It's a very difficult and unforgiving fabric and cut that I can't believe anyone would suggest it to another woman, and if my MIL bought it for me I'd wonder why she wants to see me in linegrie and whether she is having a dig at my body because it's an unforgiving dress.

billiongulls · 16/01/2026 08:28

I came in to say it was none of his business but having seen the dress I'm on his side

Yes the model's lower stomach is sticking out in it and she has an amazing figure.

Lifestooshort71 · 16/01/2026 08:30

You asked the audience and the general vote is no. You haven't responded to say you've taken this vote on board so perhaps we've all wasted our time? I like that the dress makes you feel good about yourself but not for a wedding.

Soontobesingles · 16/01/2026 08:31

It does rather depend on the wedding - registry office with a party after this is maybe fine. Any kind of formal white wedding with a sit down meal then no, this is a bit too white and a bit too sexy. And I am normally very chill about these things.

Can you not ask DH to take you for a since dinner somewhere and wear it there?

bluescarf · 16/01/2026 08:32

It looks beautiful and anyone who has the figure for it would look stunning. But it’s a big ‘look at me’ dress and not at all suitable for a wedding unless you’re the bride. Get your DH to take you away for an evening somewhere fabulous so you can wear it then.

CautiousLurker2 · 16/01/2026 08:33

Stunning dress, but not for a wedding. Perhaps MiL needs to gift you a babysitting pass instead of a dress and enable you both to book a break to London (or another city) so that you can dress up for an event or posh restaurant.

IMHO, if she is gifting you sexy dresses that you cannot wear due to childcare issues, she is either passive aggressively undermining you or trying to drop her son too subtle hints that he needs to start taking you out and treating you as the stunning woman he fell in love with. From what you say it’s probably the latter… but she can buy you all the dresses in the world - unless she is willing to provide childcare so that you can wear them, then they are a pointless gift?

Iloveeverycat · 16/01/2026 08:33

Top top is too much flesh for a start.

RottenBanana · 16/01/2026 08:34

You have posted about this dress so many times. Isn't it several sizes too small for you? It was an odd gift from a MIL and even more peculiar to now be trying to squeeze yourself into it for a winter wedding.

It is completely unsuitable, looks like a cheap satin negligée, wrong colour and far too much on display for a wedding guest. It screams attention seeking and not in a good way.

User8008135 · 16/01/2026 08:36

It's a beautiful dress, I would save it for a date night and keep it as something to look forward to once you are ready.

Being white all on the skirt and very bridal looking on the skirt makes it a no. I'm with your husband on that. I do get why you'd really want to wear something you love, look great in though, might be worth looking for something new if you can afford it? If money is tight, I've found some lovely clothes when I've been round charity shops and on vinted.

MegsyLondon · 16/01/2026 08:37

The bride is extremely glamorous. She wore a long cut out dress to my wedding, it was light yellow. It is not a church wedding either. Many of the guests will be wearing dresses like this to the wedding as she is very glamorous and works in social media so her friends are also glamorous. I have been to weddings where women have worn black and white before. Someone wore a white dress to my wedding, I did not mind. I was asking whether the white skirt is ok which was the only issue my husband had with it, clearly it is not.

How would you have felt if a guest at your wedding turned up wearing exactly the same dress?

You are focusing on yourself too much and how it makes you feel amazing. You're forgetting that this is a very inappropriate dress for a wedding.

It's a black tie dress for starters & not a wedding guest dress. It's very revealing, lacey and too white. You'll have people talking about you behind your back and not in a good way.

Wear something else and there's plenty available in the sales.

Obscurity · 16/01/2026 08:38

Alltheyellowbirds · 16/01/2026 07:50

Problem is, with a jacket hiding the black top you will just see the white satin skirt and then it really will look like she’s wearing a wedding dress.

I think a very fitted black jacket could work.

Then go glamourous, no one is saying you can’t. But you can’t wear this dress. You are trying to force fit it as you want to wear it.

friskybivalves · 16/01/2026 08:42

OP, could you perhaps post a picture of you wearing the dress to help us judge whether it is suitable? Maybe with a wrap or long stole if you have one? You can obscure your face.

Plankton89 · 16/01/2026 08:42

No

No it looks like a bridal dress

Sparkletastic · 16/01/2026 08:44

What other dresses has MIL previously gifted you?

PandorasSockBox · 16/01/2026 08:44

I am with the majority here, lovely dress just not suitable for a wedding.
BUT could you find a dressmaker to make you something in that style, maybe with a back and lovely sleeves in a more appropriate fabric and colour?

Superhansrantowindsor · 16/01/2026 08:45

Nope. Totally inappropriate for a wedding. It’s an evening dress.

Blinkingbother · 16/01/2026 08:45

Definite no from me too I’m afraid, it looks beautiful but not for someone else’s wedding.
