To think that most women have pierced ears?

Sweetiedarling7 · 14/01/2026 08:22

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

Why were so many parents saying it’s “common”? Did they not notice that the queen had them?
multiple piercings is different.

user2848502016 · 14/01/2026 15:16

My mum was a 70s teenager too and didn’t get them pierced until she was 18 and left home because my grandmother thought they were “common”

I had mine done early 90s for my 10th birthday but can’t wear earrings as much as I’d like anymore because I’m allergic to a lot of metals

SassyCow · 14/01/2026 15:36

I had my ears pierced from a young age but let them heal as I didn't like it. I got them pierced again at 16 ish.

GivePeaceAChance · 14/01/2026 16:07

Oh dear I clearly have too much time on my hands today
Ive googled the prevalence

‘ Overall Piercings: A British Orthodontic Society study found 10% of UK adults had piercings (excluding earlobe).

  • Young Women: Nearly half (46.2%) of women aged 16-24 reported having a body piercing (non-earlobe) in a 2008 study, notes a UK Parliament deposition.
  • Earlobe Popularity: Earlobe piercings are very common, especially for females, with many starting young (ages 6-10 in the UK).
  • Data Nuance: Most studies focus on non-earlobe piercings to gauge trends in body modification, so earlobe prevalence is often assumed or inferred as nearly universal for females, as reported on Reddit threads.
In summary, while 10% covers body piercings beyond the earlobe, the percentage of the UK population with at least one earlobe piercing is significantly higher, likely encompassing most women and a good portion of men, though precise numbers are scarce. ‘

so not a majority

like you @SassyCow mine were pierced at a very young age. Too young for me to remember or choose
I let one heal over but have kept one ear pierced

no idea why some of my text is bold. It’s been a long day so far

I don’t think multiple piercings is any different
It shows individualism I think

Bitzee · 14/01/2026 16:16

I only know one person that doesn’t. Except for her I would say I’m in minority only having 2 because everyone else I know has multiples lobes plus cartilage.

Those figures don't add up, since 46% of women is already 23% of the population.

But it’s 46% of 16-24s. Or have l misread it?

l was getting all proud to be one of 46% with non earlobe piercings (I assume that means as well as earlobe?)) then l realised l was too old.

I was like you until a couple of years ago. Mum wouldn’t let me get mine done until 16 and by then I couldn’t be bothered. I got them done and I do actually love wearing earrings but it took me until about age 34!

multiple piercings is different

Multiple piercings are most prevalent among middle-class arty/alternative types. It's not a 'common' class thing at all.

I went back to check and you got there before me

I don't. Even as a child I was always a bit put off by the thought of it, always seen it as a kind of (albeit mild and harmless) body mutilation. Objectively, that's what it is!

Agree - and I got mine done in my mid-twenties so as to have a good choice of earrings.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 14/01/2026 17:16

Mines are pierced but only because I took myself off to a local jeweller who did the equivalent of Claire’s piercing when I was 14. My mum was horrified ( she’s never had hers pierced) and was quite concerned I’d contract hepatitis. I’d think the majority of women have pierced ears but there will be a proportion who don’t or who have let them heal up.

TheWonderhorse · 14/01/2026 17:17

I got mine done as a child but they got infected and I took them out, I've never done them again and it doesn't bother me. I'm 44.

Both my girls have had theirs done, but because they chose to and I made them wait to be sure (age 9/10), I never made it a weird rite of passage like some parents do. I did insist they were done at a proper piercing studio not a Claire's mind you. I figured if they were going to get it done, it's good that it's young enough that they had to accept my conditions and do it properly.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 14/01/2026 17:34

My parents made me wait until I was 17 so I could make an I formed choice and wouldn't 'regret' it. I got my 3rd piercings age 47 and have had 2 for most of my adult life.

I believe the late Queen wore clip on earrings and I read that Camilla doesn’t have pierced ears. Kate does though.

The late queen must have lost a lot of earrings in her time wearing clip ons.

She had them pierced age 25 before her coronation.

Mine were pierced at 3 and don't close up no matter how long I go without earrings. I used to wear them all the time but these days I often go without for months.

Similar here but I wear gold studs all the time (except when i have special occasion earrings in). It was just normal for us, all the women and girls in our family have had earrings for years, going right back to the Victorian era.

BertieWoostersChaps · 14/01/2026 18:32

I find it funny that some people's parents thought it was "common". The late Queen and all the royal family ladies have all seemed to have had pierced ears for decades now!

EdinaTheConfessor · 14/01/2026 18:35

I am an 80s child and everyone I know has their ears pierced. My mum had mine done when I was 4. I had a second and third pair pierced in my teens.

Kayla83 · 14/01/2026 18:42

I don't. My Mom told me if I wanted my ears pierced to wait until I was older. I lost interest and never had them done.

Oneborneverydecade · 14/01/2026 18:44

tfu · 14/01/2026 08:33

I had mine pierced at 11 and one of the piercings got infected. I tried to wear earrings but it just hurt my ears every time with a horrible reaction so I let them close up. So I did have pierced ears for around six months or so. Now I’m 50 I’ve benn thinking about doing them again but clips on are fine for the odd occasion I want to wear earrings!

This is me except I had mine pierced again in April 25 aged 47. My DD was having hers done and thought why not
