To think that most women have pierced ears?

Sweetiedarling7 · 14/01/2026 08:22

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

Queen Camilla has apparently never pierced her ears but I suppose she has a team of jewellers to make her earrings stay put. I like the old fashioned screw style which is adjustable and much more comfortable. I find almost all clip earrings really pinch.

HollaHolla · 15/01/2026 01:22

My sister and I were about 14 before we were allowed them done. Our Dad was in the forces, and had seen some horrible injuries from jewellery (torn earlobes/degloved fingers.)
Our Mum had never had hers done, but I took her to a fancy place for them to be done for her 60th birthday, after her admiring many nice earrings. She's almost 80 now, and wears her earrings most days. Says she still can't sleep in them, which is weird to me, as I've got 9 piercings, and never take them out!

EBearhug · 15/01/2026 01:58

I was desperate to have mine done around age 13, but my mother refused, and then when I was old enough (and had my own money,) I was too busy swimming and being a blood donor and stuff. I had them done in Australia when I was travelling, just before my 30th birthday, partly because I'd been in malarial countries, so would be barred from giving blood for a couple of years anyway.

My mother said they really suited me and she should have made me get them done years ago. I said nothing.

I know enough women without pierced ears that I wouldn't give them as a present unless I knew for certain that someone had had them pierced.

JillMW · 15/01/2026 07:39

I don’t

Mumto2at · 15/01/2026 08:02

Me! I'm 29.
I never wanted them done when I was younger and now it just seems to much of a faf having to do the aftercare and wear earrings for weeks so they don't close up. I'm not really a jewellery kind of girl (usually just occasions) so this would annoy me.

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 15/01/2026 08:11

After years of begging my mum let me have mine done when I was 10. I've gone through phases in the last 40 odd years of wearing earrings and not wearing earrings (I'm in my 50s) but the holes never seem to close up, which is handy.

I like wearing earrings, the right earrings (matching outfit/other jewellery) make me look more put together. They're also cheap to buy in comparison with other jewellery!

Tudorfan · 15/01/2026 09:38

I had mine pierced when I was 7, I’m now 39 & haven’t worn them for years so they have closed up. My daughter is 10 & has no interest in having hers pierced (it’s up to her at this age & I would have no issue with it if she wanted them pierced).

PeachBlossom1234 · 15/01/2026 09:39

I don’t, I’m 43 and have just never wanted to - my theory is that if there was meant to be holes there then there would be!

Over the years I’ve encountered so many people who can’t wrap their heads around it but I’ve never bowed to peer pressure. I’m a very girly girl and always have my nails, hair and face done but earrings are just something not for me

Camomilecrumpet · 15/01/2026 10:17

I’m 29 and have never had a piercing. My gran didn’t either so I inherited some nice clip-ons but I only wear them on special occasions. I was never told I couldn’t have my ears pierced, I just never bothered.

Cherrytree86 · 14/01/2026 11:40

@weareallcats

what do you find annoying about earring out of interest? Once they’re in, I forget about them, so I’m intrigued!

Bit of a late response but if I wear earrings I am constantly aware of them - find myself twiddling them, or my hair gets stuck in them. I can only wear gold, as anything else causes irritation - I do have very sensitive skin, so I guess that could be why. I have 2 piercings in each lobe and they all still work, despite me only wearing earrings in and out.

I don’t and would never consider clip ons. Personally dislike it for me.

I've found clips to be extremely uncomfortable. You notice them the whole time you're wearing them.

lilkitten · 15/01/2026 12:14

I'm a jeweller, we get a lot of requests for clip earrings but I'd say maybe 90% of customers are looking for regular earrings. I hardly ever use my piercings, two of them are supposedly closed-up at this point but I get regular infections in the four piercings in my lobes. I've tried to persuade my kids to not get ear piercings, they'd be better with tattoos, my tattoo has been no issue at all but wish I'd not done the ear piercings. Never had any difficulty with my septum piercing though.

LateLifeReturnee · 15/01/2026 14:04

I don't. Don't know if I ever really wanted it done. Then read a story about theSpanish Civil war where they ripped the earrings out of the girl's ears and watched two girls fight and pull each other's earrings out in my teens. That put me right off.

Love jewelery in general but never saw anything nice enough to get me over my aversion

If there was meant to be holes there would be.

You could say that about anything body wise.

A nice pair of earrings enhances your look.
I mean one pair not loads.

My problem is I lose them.

This.

You could apply the same logic to clothes and walk around naked in the winter.

CustardySergeant · 15/01/2026 15:49

I don't have pierced ears (or pierced anything).

thefamous5 · 15/01/2026 16:05

I have pierced ears, since I was 7 (40 now). Also got my nose, lip and tongue pierced.

My daughter (only 6) has said she never wants hers pierced.

thefamous5 · 15/01/2026 16:08

Thinking about my family - my mum has hers pierced, my nan did, I know for sure my one sister in law does but im not sure about the other one (even though I've known her for 20 years!).

Disturbia81 · 15/01/2026 16:10

No I know quite a lot who wear clip ons.

multiple piercings is different

Multiple piercings are most prevalent among middle-class arty/alternative types. It's not a 'common' class thing at all.

That’s just your observation. Plenty of working class and ‘underclass’ (for lack of better term) women have belly button piercings or lip piercings. Eyebrows. Not just arty types at all.

Assumption. But source and evidence? @BauhausOfEliott do not day “just” arty types.

I find it funny that some people's parents thought it was "common". The late Queen and all the royal family ladies have all seemed to have had pierced ears for decades now!

I'm in my fifties, it wasn't considered 'common' unless you had more than one piercing where I was growing up.

SpongyNight · 16/01/2026 10:45

I am 52 and wasn’t allowed pierced ears until I was 16. Most of my friends were allowed at 12/13.

I honestly can’t remember if I had them done or not then - if I did I let close up fairly soon as I definitely had them pierced again when I was 22/23. One didn’t seem straight/was hard to get an earring in and I rarely wear any jewellery so it seemed a bit of a hassle…so they closed up.
I am planning on trying again - this time with a needle at a piercing studio rather than piercing gun.

I can’t stress the importance of avoiding a piercing gun enough. I have a total of 6 piercings (3 on ears) and they have been trouble free. Friend had 2 gun lobe piercings and lots of problems.

Mine were done with a piercing gun 40 years ago and I've never had a single issue with them. I'd been expecting it to hurt but it was painless. Obviously I have no idea about modern piercing guns. It wouldn't surprise me if the quality of them or the earrings that go with them has deteriorated, like the quality of everything else.
