To think that most women have pierced ears?

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

Me

I'm 60 and never had it done.

I detest piercings of any sort on any part of the body/head/face, it turns my stomach, and also those ''CD's'' in the ears or great big holes in them. UGH!

Squirrel60 · 16/01/2026 13:33

And also clip-on earrings, too, another UGH!

I had mine pierced as a teenager, found out I am allergic to anything except solid gold, got a nasty infection, let the holes heal. Haven't been able to wear an earing for 25+ years so I'd call myself non-pierced now!

I'm interested to see where the whole "more than one piercing is common" idea is going right now with the explosion in the popularity of cartilage piercings and all the expensive brands you can buy now. So you still have alternative-style piercings and jewellery and some styles still look tacky, but there are also pretty, dainty piercings from places like Astrid and Miyu and super expensive stuff from Maria Tash. So it's not so easy to make stereotypes any more.

My parents imposed a kind of arbitrary rule that my sister and I weren't allowed to get our ears pierced until we were 14 (1980s). No idea why this age was deemed okay. We both wasted no time getting them done with great excitement (in Debenhams) when we reached 14! I've had long periods in my adult life where I never bothered wearing earrings though.

My daughter (9) wants hers done, and I'm thinking the time is right -lots of her friends have had theirs done in the last year or so. Our local piercing place won't do any piercings unless the person is old enough to understand and consent.

I don’t

I just don’t get jewellery

it took me ages to get used to my engagement and wedding ring

piercing children’s ears is just something I can and will never get on board with. Particularly babies and toddlers. It’s pure vanity from the parents.

when my child wants them doing she can when she gets to high school age.

My mother really didn't approve but told me if I really wanted my ears pierced I could have it done. I think my mother was aware that she was an older parent and had been brought up with rather rigid ideas about what was proper and she had never had pierced ears. However, a girl in my class at high school had some raging infection from an ear piercing that snaked down her neck. It looked awful and she seemed to be left with a lot of scarring afterwards despite what I assume was aggressive antibiotic therapy. I told my mother I had no intention of having my ears pierced. I suppose my real problem though was when you took the earrings out you had rather ugly looking holes in your ear lobes so you were sort of stuck wearing earrings. I collect antique screw earrings - much less painful than clip fittings. Of course I have given birth to one child who now wears a nose ring! The other non-nose ring wearer child is utterly opposed to any piercing of body parts - some sort of atavistic throwback to his grandmother..

My mum wasn't allowed hers done till she could make her own choice at 18 (back in the 70s). She ended up with 3 in each year, lol.

I had mine done at Claire's accessories in 2000! I was 12.

Dd had hers done age 7, her choice. She's 14 now and still likes earrings.

So yes, I think it's definitely more acceptable now!

I first had mine done when I was 5, but my ears didn't react well to the earrings (think my mum bought cheap earrings). So they were taken out and the holes closed over. I decided to get them pierced again age 30. Before this, I felt like you. Someone got me earrings prior to getting them pierced again for my birthday, as they'd assumed every adult female has pierced ears 🙈 was awkward!

Illbethereinaminute · 17/01/2026 20:16

I have a ton and would get more if they actually healed well. It's been one hell of a journey for all of my piercings, many have come out but some have stayed.

I do think the majority of women have one set though...

I used to but they’ve closed up, cause I didn’t wear earrings for too long.
When I got mine done at 14, my granny who was in her 70s decided to get her’s done too. She lived for another 20 years, wore her earrings everyday and had a great time picking & buying them off QVC.
It’s never too late if you’d like them done.

73 now, I was allowed to have mine pierced during the school holiday between juniors and seniors. Don't often wear earrings except in december but the holes never heal over
