To think that most women have pierced ears?

Sweetiedarling7 · 14/01/2026 08:22

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

I do but don't think I've worn earrings in 15 years.

Do keep thinking about getting a helix piercing but think I'm too much of a coward now!

Do it!

I wasn’t allowed mine done until I was 16. Now I’m in my 40s I went a bit mad and have had my nose, tragus, helix, conch done and several lobes. 😊

I know more people now with lots of piercings than none at all.

TeaRoseTallulah · 14/01/2026 11:59

I only know one person who doesn't.

LeopardsANeutral · 14/01/2026 12:06

I'd always been desperate to have my ears pierced. My mum made me wait until the summer between fishing primary school and starting secondary. I remember thinking she was SO mean to make me wait so long when all of my friends had them already! My sister has never wanted her ears pierced, she thinks it makes her more unusual these days to have no tattoos or piercings. My DD is 5 and hasn't yet shown any interest - I wonder if that might change with her having started school, I've noticed a few girls in her class have earrings, so I wonder if she'll notice too. I don't know what I'll say if she does ask!

BrendaThePoodle · 14/01/2026 12:07

I have mine pierced however i have a terrible allergy to earrings so I haven’t worn any for about 30 years. I love the piercings in the ear that are more unusual. (Not sure of their names) but I think they’re lovely.

GreenChameleon · 14/01/2026 12:14

I don't have pierced ears and have never wanted to get them pierced. It's just something that never interested me. I wear other kinds of jewellery so it's not that I generally lack interest.

It seems to have become more common for very young girls to get their ears pierced. When I was in primary school (late eighties/early nineties) two friends of mine got their ears pierced and they got quite a lot of attention!

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 14/01/2026 12:16

I don’t - wasn’t allowed and then wasn’t bothered about it.

Squirrelsnut · 14/01/2026 12:21

I'm 55 and had to wait until I was 12 - most of my friends had theirs done earlier. I wear earrings almost every day - they're such a quick way to add a little oomph to my face area. But I couldn't tell you which of my colleagues have or haven't got them.

Leapintothelightning · 14/01/2026 12:22

I got mine pierced at 12. I can’t remember the last time I wore earrings though so might as well have not bothered!

LastnightIdreamtIwenttoManderleyagain · 14/01/2026 12:30

I’m 65. Got mine done in my teens as did my older sister (mid 1970s). Mum had hers done after us. We were at boarding school and pretty much everyone had them done (some with a needle and a cork!). I still wear earrings (studs) everyday and feel undressed without them.

Natsku · 14/01/2026 12:46

I'm 39 and never had my ears pierced, never wanted to either. My teenage daughter doesn't have hers pierced but wants facial piercings instead!

Unicornsandprincesses · 14/01/2026 12:48

I don’t. My mother doesn’t either. She also never liked it, but said I could choose myself when I was older (I think around 13 or 14,I can’t remember exactly now).

I just never saw the appeal of putting a hole in my ear by that point. So never bothered.

I’ll be telling my daughter the same

I got mine pierced at age 50! Never really considered it before, but my daughter was getting hers done and I suddenly decided to get mine done at the same time.

My DM had hers done at 40 when I got mine done at 16, in the 80s.

DSM (70s) and MIL (80s) have never had theirs done. Neither has DS’s GF in her 20s.

Tallypoo193 · 14/01/2026 12:52

The only person I know who doesn't - and never has - is my 80yo mum. Much like you I think she was taught to believe it was "common" to do. She's big jewellery wearer for rings, necklaces, bangles etc so I do find it quite surprising that she has never succumbed.

Cherrytree86 · 14/01/2026 12:53

Honestly the whole Peircing as ‘mutilation’ is just weird. Hair cutting and colourings So many things could be classed as self mutilation, I mean pregnancy radically changes your body, is that self mutilation?

Aliflowers · 14/01/2026 13:01

Mine were done when I was young, maybe one so have no recollection of it being done. I wear earrings 24/7. Small platinum/diamond studs and only take them out to clean or to wear a bigger pair for an occasion

Oldest DD wanted them and got when she was old enough to understand. I think she first mentioned getting them when she was around 4/5 and was 9 getting them dine

Youngest DD had no interest so may never get them pierced and I don’t see it as a necessity. I can’t say I’d find it strange if someone didn’t have pierced ears though I think the majority of the women I know do

Pickledpoppetpickle · 14/01/2026 13:03

Had mine done last year - also a case of my dad refusing to allow it to happen. I realised my dad had been dead for 15 years and I've been an adult for even longer so did it. Love it! Have had a ball buying earrings from Vinted. Can't see them though - need to give some thought to my hair!

Unicorn34 · 14/01/2026 13:12

I dont have anything pierced! Even helping someone put an earring in makes me gag for some unknown reason!

ChillyB · 14/01/2026 13:15

No piercings here, I’m 42. My DM always says (still) no need to poke holes in yourself.

JustMarriedBecca · 14/01/2026 13:18

I had them pierced but let them heal up. I think I'm autistic and it's part of a sensory thing. I feel like they are weighing down my body. They make me feel heavy and they feel alien.

Everythingwillbeokay · 14/01/2026 13:21

I don't. No desire.

Zlemonits · 14/01/2026 13:23

Looking back, most girls at school had lobes pierced by about 13 (including me). My usually progressive Dad was fine about girls piercing their ears, but totally disapproved of boys doing the same. Still can't work that one out!

UniquePinkSwan · 14/01/2026 13:24

I don’t. I’m not a jewellery person at all. I don’t even wear my wedding ring

Being made pregnant without your consent, including if you are too young or incapacitated to give informed consent, is a crime punishable by many years in jail. Hope that helps.

coconutchocolatecream · 14/01/2026 13:56

I'm in my mid-40s. I had them done when I was young (before I was a teenager), but within the past ten years stopped wearing earrings for a while (I think I was having trouble with earrings making me sore or itchy), and now the holes have closed back up. Not sure if I'll bother having them done again... I like the look of earrings, but I'm also happy as I am.

TubeScreamer · 14/01/2026 14:11

No piercings at all including ears.
My dad felt the same. I wasn’t allowed to have my ears pierced so long as I lived under his roof. By the time I’d left home I’d forgotten that I ever wanted my ears pierced.
