To think that most women have pierced ears?

In my teenage years (70/80s) my father refused to let me have my ears pierced. He was a very judgemental unpleasant man and it was deemed “common”.

I never did end up getting mine done even after I left home because I went into nursing and the client group I worked with (people with extreme challenging behaviour) made wearing earrings inadvisable.

It seems to me that pretty much every woman has pierced ears now and many girls have them done at quite young ages.

Is there anybody left like me who doesn’t have pierced ears?

I'm 41 and don't have mine pierced. Parents weren't keen initially, and then I just wasn't bothered enough about it to do it. I still think maybe I should, but I've never quite wanted it enough. I'd definitely say it was more usual to have them pierced than not, but it's not something I look at a lot of the time.

I can't say I pay all that much attention but thinking of the women in my family - my grans didn't have theirs pierced. They wore clip ons. My mum doesn't have hers pierced either and doesn't wear any earrings. I didn't get mine pierced until I was 30 because my mum always said I could have mine done as soon as I was old enough to care for them myself cause they icked her out...but I never cared enough to bother. I eventually got them done cause I decided I wasn't doing long hair anymore and felt that having my ears pierced balanced out the masculinity of the 'short back and sides'!

RedRiverShore6 · 14/01/2026 10:14

I did when I was young but let them close up because earrings irritated my ears, I had a piercing at the top of my ear that I had to go to the GP within a week because it was all swollen, I haven't worn earrings for over 40 years now.

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/01/2026 10:20

I had mine done when I was about 10 but haven’t worn earrings for about 30 years, just lost interest.

I think piercing babies’ & toddlers’ ears is dodgy AF.

onceagainforrose · 14/01/2026 10:21

I don’t have them - the idea freaks me out, although I have no problem with piercings on other people. I had to leave the shop when my younger sister had hers done at about age 11.

NotMeekNotObedient · 14/01/2026 10:22

I had mine done about 7 after lots of begging. Got infected. Had them re-done about 12. I wear simple, small gold, diamond studs. I leave them in all the time. I'm glad I got them pierced but don't really notice them. I think most of my friends as teens had them. Not really noticed if my adult friends have them.

If DD want them, I'd let her but around 12 or 13.

Whosthetabbynow · 14/01/2026 10:22

After much pleading my aunt took me aged 13 to have mine pieced. My late mum never had pierced ears x

Marlaysydney12 · 14/01/2026 10:23

I never got mine done (40s). Always seemed like extra hassle I don't need, especially when doing team sports. I have curly hair so it's quite busy around my face anyway.

FinallyHere · 14/01/2026 10:24

My mother didn’t, neither did my sister or I, her daughter and five grandchildren.

if I had ever been interested in having mine pierced, I would have been put off by seeing the trouble other girls at school went through from infections and the hole closing up and needing to ‘stab a needle through’

yeah, I guess I’m too squeamish

merrymonsters · 14/01/2026 10:25

I never have. I'm 58. My teenage daughter doesn't either.

BearPear · 14/01/2026 10:25

I had mine done at age 13, they never fully healed and after about a year I took them out and they closed up. I considered getting them done again when I turned 50 but didn’t, now I’m wondering about getting them done for my 60th!
my mum had hers done a couple of years after me and hers never healed either (she went somewhere fancier than me!), she let hers close up too. My daughter has enough piercings for us both and my son recently got his nose done!

FractiousPangolin · 14/01/2026 10:27

I longed for pierced ears all through my childhood and finally got them done when I was 14, because only y10 and above were allowed to wear earrings at school. Stopped wearing them when I was a student, but two decades later they still haven't closed up! I don't wear earrings and probably never will again as I prefer the way my face looks without attention drawn to my earlobes, but I still have these two stupid little holes that won't go away.

Inthefuturenow · 14/01/2026 10:27

I don't, anymore anyway.
My friends mum pierced them when I was 10 with a needle and ice!
I never got on with earrings though, they always annoyed me, as does most jewellery, so I I haven't worn them in 20 odd years and they've closed up now.

Mumsknot · 14/01/2026 10:27

I don’t. But mainly because I tried and my body rejected it and tried to make a big scar. I still sometimes get keloid scars today. Tried once, never again and now in my 50s and definitely won’t bother!

thereare4lights · 14/01/2026 10:27

I'm in my 50s and have had my ears piereced since 10. All my friends have pierced ears but not all wear earrings. Haven't brushed my hair today, but have my diamond studs in!

stargirl27 · 14/01/2026 10:28

I got mine done when I was little (I now have a few in each year and my nose and navel done)

Most women I know have their ears pierced, I don't really look at whether strangers do though.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 14/01/2026 10:31

I always thought so because everyone I grew up with did. But, now I’m 30 I recently bought a bunch of my friends some pretty earrings for Xmas and it turned out 5/6 of them didn’t even have pierced ears 😂 I was so embarrassed but it turns out lots of adult women don’t have pierced ears.

I got mine done around age 7. I was raised northern and working class so your dad probably would think I was common. In my mums mind, one piercing in the lobe was womanly, 2+ was common 😂

Tallestone · 14/01/2026 10:31

I got mine done when I was younger but it got infected so I left them out and they closed up.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 14/01/2026 10:31

I was 14 when my parents relented and allowed me to have mine pierced (I’m 56).

I was working overseas when I had my daughter and, as a baby, everyone assumed that she was a boy because her ears weren’t pierced. I think that the norm was at three months. It was cultural so not for me to comment or indeed criticise.

Tbf I’ve never known anyone have to do any of that

winkywanky · 14/01/2026 10:32

I'm also early 40s and never had mine done. Never wanted to

DoAWheelie · 14/01/2026 10:37

I have a single ring in the top right of my ear but I don't have either of my lobes done. I didn't get it done until I was 18 - my best friend also got the same piercing on his left ear and we paid for each others as our 18th birthday presents and got them done together.

None of my friends irl have lobe piercings either. My mother did but let them heal up years ago.

EchoesOfOurDreams · 14/01/2026 10:39

I got mine done when I was 10. One got infected so I ended up letting them close over. I had them re-pierced when I was 14 and I made sure to take proper care of them to ensure they didn't get infected this time. I'm now 37 and not had any issues in all that time.

I think it is better to let girls get their ears pierced when they are a bit older, say teenagers rather than as young children, and by a reputable piercer too not just on the high street with a piercing gun like mine were 😳

Cherrytree86 · 14/01/2026 10:39

Miranda65 · 14/01/2026 09:25

I don't. I agree that parents viewed it as "common", but also I never wanted it. I could never see the point of making holes where holes weren't meant to be!

@Miranda65

erm… to put earrings in??

dottiedodah · 14/01/2026 10:39

I had mine done at 17 with my Saturday job.Can only wear gold though .Most people I know have at least 1 piercing, some 2 or 3 and I'm in my early 60s!
