To have put my rubbish in the neighbours bin

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 14/01/2026 00:04

The people opposite me, who were tenants, moved out just a couple of days before Christmas.
The house doesn't have a "to let" sign or anything up yet, and there's definitely noone living there. However, today was bin day and someone, presumably the owner, had been round and put the wheelie bin out ready last night.
The binmen come at 7am.
At 6:45am, I had the idea of maybe adding a bag of my rubbish to their black bin, if it wasn't full, as I am still trying to catch up from Christmas and have extra.
I nipped over the road, had a peek and there was nothing but one single Tesco carrier bag of rubbish in there.
I went back inside, tied up my own full bin bag of rubbish from my kitchen bin and carried it over the road. By this time, I could hear the bin lorries already coming so I know noone was going to be using that space in that bin.
I then took the bin back up their drive for them.
I went back inside, very pleased with myself for now having completely empty bins.
DH was horrified and said it was very cheeky behaviour and very embarrassing. He really hopes noone saw.

Was it cheeky and embarrassing?

We haven't moved out and our grotty neighbour used to put their shitty nappies and broken bin liners full of God knows what in the top of our bin on collection day (bin was out of sight and hidden behind a hedge) meaning muggins had to then wash out the bin full of rancid liquid 🤢
We don't put the bin there now and there's been nothing since - as I can see the bin from my kitchen window 👀

That said, I don't think it's cheeky to do what you did at all.. But only if they've moved out 😉

My vile and continually horrendous neighbours dumped a load of maggot infested rotting food in my bin. They must have done in the early hours of the morning on bin collection day. We can put our bins out from 4pm onwards on the day before the collection and this is what I always do So imagine my horror when I went to pop some extra rubbish in it on the following morning before the bin lorry arrived to find it full to the brim with stinking old food, and maggots and flies crawling around. They are an unofficial HMO and produce tons of rubbish, i noticed that their bin was also filled to the brim with rotting food too. This is just one of the many things they have got up to, I hate them!

Happyher · 15/01/2026 21:10

I don’t think you did anything wrong. My bin is frequently not full so I’ve told my neighbour to put her excess rubbish in mine if she needs to as long as the lid shuts properly as required by council

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 15/01/2026 19:13

6 weeks!! You should all be refusing to pay your council tax.

I live in Sweden and pay 34% of my disability benefits to the council. The 6 weekly bin collections are their new strategy - to be fair they do collect organic, compostable food waste every 2 weeks - but only if you put it in paper bags in the organic bin - the general waste, plastic recycling and cardboard are each every 6 weeks.

It was a bit of a shock when we got back from holiday to find 4 bins.

RavenhairedRachel · 15/01/2026 21:46

I can't see anything wrong with it. What's the difference emptying a full bin or one a tenth full. It's not the crime of the century.

Bernardo1 · 15/01/2026 21:47

Yes.

isthesolution · 15/01/2026 21:48

Absolutely would not do this. Yes it’s cheeky.

pouletvous · 15/01/2026 21:49

Nobody complained and no harm
done? What’s the problem?

TheWibble · 15/01/2026 21:59

I don't see the issue. My neighbour is a 4 person household and I'm a 2nperson household. I rarely fill my wheelie bin to the top, whereas she struggles with extra bags because she has a baby in nappies. I'm always telling her to use any available space in my bin once i've put it out. It just makes sense.

MrsJeanLuc · 15/01/2026 22:34

Thelittlegreyone · 14/01/2026 05:01

It’s technically flytipping.

Don't be ridiculous!

bumblebee1000 · 15/01/2026 22:53

Oh thats nothing....we have newish neighbours, 4 houses along, young couple who seem to have lots of money and also an ocd cleaning issue...replaced brand new kitchen within days of moving in...never use it...have a cleaner and the 2 mums visit daily to clean an already clean kitchen and house...all food is delivered, never cook as my neighbour can see into the kitchen etc...anyway..they had a baby last year and he would put the soiled nappies unwrapped in our bins....I was sitting in my car late one night and saw him pop nappies into several neighbours bins....their own bins empty...I collected nappies with gloves and dumped them on their doorstep...end of nappy issue !!

Grammarnut · 16/01/2026 00:09

It was cheeky. And if the bin men had seen you they would have made you take rubbish bag out because it was not your bin.
However, no-one is perfect.

topsecretcyclist · 16/01/2026 00:28

I don't think it's a problem. I wouldn't mind if someone put their rubbish in my bin when it was out for collection. If my bin isn't full the bin men fill it with bags from other bins so they're only putting one bin on the lorry anyway. I pay for a garden bin and my neighbour asks every year if he can put his grass cuttings in it. No problem. He probably uses it more than me, which is a bit embarrassing.

I'd rather rubbish was in my bin than dumped on the street.

Friendlygingercat · 16/01/2026 02:13

Can you do a deal with a neighbour who is single or childfree so does not use all the space in their bin? Offer to put out and return their bin for them as a quid prp quo.

MangaKanga · 16/01/2026 02:48

Is your DH normally such an anal retentive killjoy?

If I had found a way to get rid of some bin bags that didn't hurt anyone, my husband would caper with joy.

Who cares I would do same not hurting nobody. Only them moaning arse hole neighbours who think there bees knees would have a problem with it . the bins empty, better than fly tipping your rubbish in public places it’s gone same hour you’ve put it in there anyway . tell your husband to go take the rubbish all the way to the tip then and get off his arse if he’s got a problem with it 😂 find this post funny because it’s something I would do myself

JayJayj · 16/01/2026 04:30

I do it all the time with neighbours who are using their bins. I wouldn’t put anything in randomly during the week. But once the bins are out the night before, if I’ve got extra rubbish I have put it in other bins.

Some people are just weird about things like this. When I moved into my current house I had lots and lots of boxes from moving and from deliveries. Both my neighbour and I have separate bins but all 8 bins (general, paper, food, tins) are kept in the shared alley. I asked the then neighbours who didn't put their paper bin out of they'd mind me putting some boxes in their empty and unused bin to get rid of the boxes quicker. Absolutely not was the answer. 🙄

Nasty people, it would not have cost them anything. Don't do them any favours such as taking parcels in.

ItsSlipperyWhenWet · 16/01/2026 06:53

Next door but 1 to me is an abandoned house. It’s owned but the owner tried to flog it briefly last year .. it has a hole going from the bathroom ceiling to the basement.. can’t imagine why it was t snapped up at a mere £250k (terraced opens onto street in a nice village but that’s like top whack for a house like his here, not one with a sunroof) he got mad and set fire to his wheely bin and it half melted. Then he got arrested for being a massive drug dealer and he’s been remanded in custody he also tried to bite off one of his brothers ears the night before and his brother reported him to police so he’s going away for a long time. Police also found hundreds of thousands of £££ of heroin in his house as we saw them taking it all out. His neighbour told the council about the bin and they dropped off 2 brand new massive bins and left the melted one. So we all put our bins in his back garden and just have communal bins now. It’s great!!

I always have space in my bin as we recycle most of our packaging and have told the neighbours they can put their excess in our bin should the need arise. I have asked another neighbour if I can put my garden waste into their garden bin if I have already filled mine and they have done the same.
You could have asked had you been quick enough to catch the person putting the bin out.
Don't be afraid to tell a neighbour with excess rubbish to pop it in your bin or ask if you can use theirs.

Goingbonkers247 · 16/01/2026 16:28

I think it's ok. Our binmen actually said ours was too full and put it in the neighbours bin. they also allow us to add a black bag next to it and they will take it.

Daisyhon · 16/01/2026 20:35

It really depends . I moved into my new house in November however it took me a few months beforehand to do the house up before i moved in , that meant there was a lot of rubbish plus the previous tenants left loads of garbage behind that I had to get rid of . The problem was my next door neighbour kept putting their rubbish ( including dirty nappies not bagged up properly) into my bin , they also used my other 2 bins 2 . This meant that I couldn’t fit non recyclable stuff into my bins on a number of occasions. When I politely asked them not to do it I got a mouthful of abuse . I lost the rag after this & the next day I ended up emptying my bin at their front door & locked it inside the house .

🤣🤣🤣 an empty house when the half empty bin is
being collected in 15 mins?

They’re not charged by weight so what’s the problem? What’s dreadfully rude about it?

Buzzingabout · 17/01/2026 11:47

If about to be emptied in 15 minutes no problem then.
