To have put my rubbish in the neighbours bin

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 14/01/2026 00:04

The people opposite me, who were tenants, moved out just a couple of days before Christmas.
The house doesn't have a "to let" sign or anything up yet, and there's definitely noone living there. However, today was bin day and someone, presumably the owner, had been round and put the wheelie bin out ready last night.
The binmen come at 7am.
At 6:45am, I had the idea of maybe adding a bag of my rubbish to their black bin, if it wasn't full, as I am still trying to catch up from Christmas and have extra.
I nipped over the road, had a peek and there was nothing but one single Tesco carrier bag of rubbish in there.
I went back inside, tied up my own full bin bag of rubbish from my kitchen bin and carried it over the road. By this time, I could hear the bin lorries already coming so I know noone was going to be using that space in that bin.
I then took the bin back up their drive for them.
I went back inside, very pleased with myself for now having completely empty bins.
DH was horrified and said it was very cheeky behaviour and very embarrassing. He really hopes noone saw.

Was it cheeky and embarrassing?

Wow how unneighbourly! A real sour note to start your residency. Curmudgeonly and dog with a bone come to mind. Let's hope they never want a favour from a neighbour in the future.

If there is no-one living there, then I may have done the same. Bit cheeky but no harm done. Hopefully no-one grasses you up, because the council love to fine people for shit like this. One woman was fined for sticking her own rubbish out of her car (a cardboard cup and a tissue I think) into a public bin. because it was her personal rubbish. (I know, batshit!) Also, someone got a fine in my area some weeks back for having their empty wheelie bin still on the public pavement, 3 days after it was emptied. They're so petty, so be careful!

I remember the woman fined for putting an envelope in a public bin. A few weeks back a friend of mine was going to put some fast food packaging in a public bin. She was parked nowhere near a drive through of said restaurant. Bin was on the carpark where she was parked. Mentioned about the woman fined for putting an envelope in. She put the rubbish back in her car and put it in my bin when we got to ours.😂😂😂

FancyHelper · 15/01/2026 18:29

Excellent problem solving skills. Would have done exactly the same

Beachtastic · 15/01/2026 18:31

I think what you did was OK, OP.

but I am now terrified of putting anything into a public bin, anywhere, ever! 🤯

CrazyCatMom · 15/01/2026 18:31

YANBU!

When we first moved into our house, there was an elderly gentleman next door. I would keep an eye out for him and his dog, had his BIL’s phone number if any concerns etc

I put his bins out every week and definitely added the odd bag of our rubbish/recycling especially over Christmas when our bins were full.

Jane143 · 15/01/2026 18:33

I would definitely do the same

ACynicalDad · 15/01/2026 18:38

For me, the issue with this is that often our bins aren't collected, and I might need that space for the next fortnight. But if it was definitely being taken or if you would go and retrieve it if needed, no problem.

TennisLady · 15/01/2026 18:42

The house next door to us is empty, they have someone popping in once every couple of weeks and that’s it. We often pop extra recycling or waste in their bins and then take them back in etc.

Kelly1969 · 15/01/2026 18:47

I was about to say yes unreasonable but I changed my mind!
as their bin was under filled and no one living there it’s fine.
would be cheeky if someone living there and you don’t ask, and if you’d gone on to their drive.
but no one to ask, plenty of room and presumably not foul smelling rubbish that would leave the bin icky I assume so no harm done!

Pinepeak2434 · 15/01/2026 18:47

I wouldn’t mind if asked, but my council fines for incorrect items going in the wrong bin so it would piss me off if someone just dumped their rubbish in my bin. Someone kept putting their dog poo bags in my bin and it made the bin stink, thankfully I have CCTV which they obviously hadn’t realised and I discovered it was a neighbour a few doors down, so the next time they did it I gave it back to them…via their letterbox.

EeyoresLostTail · 15/01/2026 18:48

sorry i'm with your Husband it is very cheeky its one of my pet hates I have neighbours who do that all the time and i get so frustrated as they usually put something Lose in Rubbish then Binmen wont take so mine dosnt get emptied or worse they bung a Black Bag in Recycling same again Binmen then wont touch

DisposableName26 · 15/01/2026 18:55

I wouldn’t worry about it. My next door neighbour has 4 wheelie bins. One because there were complete arseholes living next door when I first moved here, and while my house was empty they stole the wheelie bin from my house, so they had two and I had to order one when I first moved here. Then more people moved to that house, not current neighbours, and they brought their wheelie bin with them from their old house 🤷‍♀️. So by the time current neighbours moved there, there were 3 bins. And next door to them, so two houses along from me, the tenant has been ill and in hospital for the last two years, so they added that bin to their collection too, making 4. I only have 3 people living here and they have 6 but I’m still mystified as to how they manage to fill 4 bins every 3 weeks, I usually still have plenty of room in the one that I have!

Lunde · 15/01/2026 18:58

I don't see a problem if the house is truly empty.

But if not empty - it would cause a riot around here now that we only get out main bins collected every 6 weeks

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 15/01/2026 19:12

Of course it's ok....I honestly despair that anyone could think it wasn't.

I'd have made sure I disposed of everything possible to make the most of it.

Just to say, my mum (along with a lot of elderly people) became obsessed with the contents of her bin. Woe betide me if a poo bag was put in it!!

I think anyone giving more than a moment's thought to the content of their bin should probably give a bit more thought to the content of their mind.

6 weeks!! You should all be refusing to pay your council tax.

Mummadeze · 15/01/2026 19:17

I am obviously very cheeky and embarrassing as I always have too much rubbish so I go to several half empty bins down our street and put my bags in on collection day. Otherwise it will pile up. If they want me not to do this, they should go back to weekly bun collections!

truffleruffle · 15/01/2026 19:24

Definitely don’t see a problem with this. I tell my neighbour to use mine if she needs. I wouldn’t have a problem with anyone using mine as long as the rubbish was tied up, as I like my bin kept clean and I use a liner.
before anyone comments I know I’m OTT.

My neighbour died recently and his mum came round to put his bin out the night before bin day. Was just after Christmas like you so I filled it 🤷‍♀️
It's just a bin. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

zanahoria · 15/01/2026 19:39

I love a bins thread

Egg7 · 15/01/2026 19:49

I do this all the time!

blackpooolrock · 15/01/2026 20:08

me and my neighbours do this all the time. They know if they need bin space they can chuck it in my bin, i don't care one jot. Likewise if i need something in the bin that i don't have space for they said use theirs.

I don't understand why people would be so territorial about bin space.

Kizmet1 · 15/01/2026 20:37

IMO it's not at all cheeky. Just practical and good sense! The bin was being collected either way, this just ensured a bit more rubbish was taken. No harm done at all.

Do you wheelie 🤣

Strawberrryfields · 15/01/2026 20:40

Absolutely fine and sensible. Would only find it cheeky if it wasn’t properly bagged and leaving their bin messy or smelly with food or whatever.

ColcColdColder · 15/01/2026 20:46

I stuck the rubbish out of my car in my neighbours bin this week, ours was overflowing and hers had one small bag in it, and we put her bin out for her.
She wouldn’t mind and had already left to go to work.
