And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:
Boeufsurletoit · 13/01/2026 14:33

I'm Mumma still, even though they're tweens/teens. I get a bit of Bruh too from the youngest.

DaisyMayBojangles · 13/01/2026 14:34

My DS is 15 and still calls me mummy, DD does too (she is 12)

Nezukokamado · 13/01/2026 14:35

Im still mummy or 'mother' haha they are young teens...

7 is SO young for that IMO

GreyCarpet · 13/01/2026 14:35

I still get called mummy sometimes by my 19 year old.

You'll still get called mummy when she wants something 😉

Mrsmch123 · 13/01/2026 14:35

mine is 4 and calls me mum some of the time😭

Nezukokamado · 13/01/2026 14:35

@Fancyahobnob is she trying to grown up too fast in other ways?

StopTheHyperbole · 13/01/2026 14:36

My son has started calling me mum now and he's only four!!!! 😭 He heard his wee pal at nursery doing the same. I'm a bit sad but sometimes he'll slip up and call me mummy. Usually in the house!

Hypercatalectic · 13/01/2026 14:36

I still call my mother Mummy and I’m in my 50s!
DD(13) calls me Mummy or Mutter (she’s learning German and thinks it’s hilarious). Her father is Daddy or Varter. I’m sure she refers to us as Mum & Dad to her friends etc.

Dollymylove · 13/01/2026 14:37

My cousin is 55 and still calls her parents mummy and daddy 😅

Zanatdy · 13/01/2026 14:37

Mine are 21 and 17 and i’m still Mama. They just never asked to change it.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 13/01/2026 14:37

My late teen calls me by my first name so enjoy mum while you can

IncessantNameChanger · 13/01/2026 14:38

Dd has called me Mother for years (she is 11)

Ds22 and ds18 called me mummy well into their teens. I just thought we were the queen and Prince Charles. A younger kid overheard my eldest calling me mummy around age 14 and had the piss taken out of him. That didn't stop him either, he was just furious 😅

My eldest son thinks dd is extremely odd for calling me mother. He said its a very cold title.

We are not at all posh.

She also calls me bru.

The only one I dislike is bru.

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

yup.

Yes, it's wrong. She doesn't feel comfortable using mummy anymore so don't insist she does, that's not very healthy for your relationship.

Suzypoo10 · 13/01/2026 14:44

We moved to a new area when I was 6. All the other kids laughed at me for saying Mummy, so I rapidly started saying Mum. My kids stopped calling mummy at around 9-10. Now they are grown up, it is often Mother or Mumsy (which I hate).

thesugarbumfairy · 13/01/2026 14:46

Mine have never called me mum. It went straight from mummy to sugarbum. I don't know when it was because its been that way for years but I'm guessing around 8/9 ish.
I've asked them why they call me by my first name and neither of them can answer the question for some reason. Although both of them call me mother when they want something...

@NotAtMyAge Sorry but it is inexplicably cringey to hear an adult called their parents mummy/daddy:

Its also a bit of a cultural thing and what you're used to hearing. "MUMMY" from an adult child does sound cringey, in say, southern england because in this region it seen as it bit formal and posh, but its totally normal to have mammy/mummy, even ma all over ireland even by adult 30 or 40 year olds to their mums. Mam is normal in wales.

LivingwithHopenowandforever · 13/01/2026 14:46

@Fancyahobnob Both of my children are in their 20s and still call me Mummy and they have even said that won’t ever change.

Same with their Dad, it’s always Daddy!

We love it ❤️

Oh god I hate this!

I watch a programme of a very posh woman, she’s lovely but she calls her mum mummy and it makes me cringe so much!

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 13/01/2026 14:37

@Livelovelaughfuckoff can you not tell them you don't like it? It would feel very disrespectful to me

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 13/01/2026 14:48

Interpink · 13/01/2026 13:24

Or Irish. Although that’s more Mammy.

that is true - it is hilarious when Irish people say that.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 13/01/2026 14:50

My children have only ever called me mum. I hate the word mummy.

EmotionallyWeird · 13/01/2026 14:51

I asked mine to call me Mum a little while before the first one started school, so they would be used to it when they went to school. I thought school age children using Mummy sounded a bit soppy.

IwannaspendchristmasontheM5 · 13/01/2026 14:51

I've always been called mum from the time any of them could first say it. Which was good because I don't like mummy always reminds me of a dusty old item from Egypt😁

Twinkletwinkly · 13/01/2026 14:51

My children are in their mid 40’s. I can’t remember what age they switched from mummy to mum but I certainly didn’t feel any sadness about it on my part. They didn’t ask if it was ok. It was just a natural progression. Maybe I’m missing something but I’m not sure why it’s important 🤷‍♀️
