And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

Probably a similar age or maybe a year or two older, when it became muuuuuummmmmm....

They're young adults now and call me Marge (my name is not Marjorie and I don't think I look like Marge Simpson 🤣)

My DH called my MIL Glad. Her name wasn’t Gladys. He has no idea why it started but it definitely stuck

SereneGoose · 13/01/2026 14:08

My mother just refused to respond to "mum" ...said she wasn't a deodorant! We settled on Ma....(she was a horrendous but very loveable snob).

Paperwhite209 · 13/01/2026 14:10

DD is 21 and I honestly couldn't tell you when 'Mum' became the go to.

I am still Mummy when she wants something though, and Mama when she's unwell or having a rough time!

Ohpleeeease · 13/01/2026 14:10

I think you have to let your DD decide. It’s what feels comfortable to her, and what her friends do.

I never called my mother “Mum”. It was Mummy or Mother. And my father was Daddy till his dying day. However my DC call me Mum, occasionally Mummy or Mother. I don’t feel like a Mum!

justasking111 · 13/01/2026 14:12

Adult sons, ma, mummy here. Don't recall mum.

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

I used to shout that at dm as a joke; she wasn't amused. 🫣

champagneplanet · 13/01/2026 14:12

Wait until your teenager calls you either 'Mother' (also referenced upthread) or even worse by your actual name! Mine does it when she's trying to get my attention and i'm busy!!

Its bittersweet moving from mummy to mum, DD2 has done it for a long time now, she's 8 but I think that was influenced by her older DD.

Definitelynotme2022 · 13/01/2026 14:15

I have 2 grownup ds's - they call me Mother and have done for a very long time, longer than I'm admitting to 😆
My dd19 calls me by my name! That started from when she was on calls with her friends and when they were at ours, and it's stuck. Occasionally I'm mother.
Ds14 calls me mother, marj (like pp, that's not my name and I don't look like Marj Simpson) and has me in his phone as Gangsta Granny.

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

That’s basically how I ended up calling my mother by her first name for most of my childhood.

She didn’t want to be called by my native language’s version of mummy (mum or momma is what she preferred) so I landed on her first name… so just be aware that there are quite a few alternatives to „mum“ that she might end up choosing.

ShowmetheMapletree · 13/01/2026 14:16

One of my dc called me "Mama", always has since a baby. Dc1 just says it at home now, though, since a nother child commented on it at school; kids can be cruel! The other I'm praying won't change soon, still "Mummy" atm!

Twinkletwinkly · 13/01/2026 14:18

It can be a regional thing. My lovely daughter in law is in her 40’s and calls her parents mummy and daddy as do all her siblings. She is N.Irish.

augustusglupe · 13/01/2026 14:19

I don’t remember, I prefer mum.
To now adult DD, i do become ‘Mother’ when she’s fed up of me 😄

mumwithallthebooks · 13/01/2026 14:19

My 4 year old already calls me "mum" or by first name and interchanges it with "mummy" on occasion. I'm just going with it!

BlackCat14 · 13/01/2026 14:20

Aw this brings back a memory for me, of playing outside when I was younger and my brother came out and asked “where’s mum?” It was the first time I’d heard him say “mum” not “mummy” and I remember finding it really shocking. I can’t remember how old he was, maybe about 8? I don’t remember when I did it though!

nannawend · 13/01/2026 14:21

My eldest daughter has just had her 55th birthday. She still calls us mummy and daddy. I think it is her security blanket...It's what make them comfortable,
not us, isn't it?

TessSaysYes · 13/01/2026 14:21

Never thought it was an actual thing!

thornbury · 13/01/2026 14:23

DD is 26. I'm still saved in her phone as Mummy.

Mummyratbag · 13/01/2026 14:23

Was gutted when eldest asked to call me Mum at 5 ish. I never said he couldn't no guilt trip, but he never has.. now have 2 teens who won't call me Mum.. I get Mother/Madre/Mumma/Ma or Mummy.. If you prefer Mum to any of the above I would just go with it now.

Cherryblossom6754 · 13/01/2026 14:23

DD was using Mum at around 18months/ 1 year. She's 9 now and Mum is all I remember really! Mama as a baby.

Bombinia · 13/01/2026 14:25

My DD asked to do this when she was about 14 and I said I would feel really sad about it so she still calls me mummy! I wouldn't have stopped her and I know she refers to me as mum elsewhere. So I'm still mummy in my house.

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Imagine how I feel... My son calls me by my first name and has insisted on it since he could speak. He's 10 now. I tried to get mom, mum, mummy.... I got a toddler contemptuous look and a "that's not what daddy calls you because that is not your name".

JamieCannister · 13/01/2026 14:29

LadeOde · 13/01/2026 13:58

Huh! Your dc call you 'idiot'?

I will often self-depreciatingly call myself an idiot if I do something silly... they've picked up on it and taken it on board! It will pass soon, I am sure! I do a combination of ignoring them and politely reminding them that it is very rude and tedious! If I thought that they were doing the same with their teachers there'd be hell to pay!

FishfingerFlinger · 13/01/2026 14:31

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 13/01/2026 13:56

@FishfingerFlinger i would be really upset by that, it almost seems disrespectful?

I’m used to it now! The eldest is autistic and I think it makes sense in his mind (why would he call me something that isn’t my name?) and the younger one has followed suit. But I do miss being mummy sometimes!

Livpool · 13/01/2026 14:31

CocoPops39616 · 13/01/2026 13:17

Mine call me Mummy at home and mum outside/school :)

DS does this. He did call me ‘bruh’ the other week though…

Ha that’s basically what I’ve just written. I get called my name because it’s my name and it’s hard to argue with their logic!
