And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

I get mumsy and mummabear from my 30 year old

I call my mum mummy. I'm 60 she's 86. My adult sons call me ma. Their father was pa.

EmotionallyWeird · 13/01/2026 14:51

I asked mine to call me Mum a little while before the first one started school, so they would be used to it when they went to school. I thought school age children using Mummy sounded a bit soppy.

Mumsy. Auto correct keeps bloody correcting it

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 14:52

Mine call me mama, both adults, my dh calls his late mum mummy when discussing her with siblings (and dad daddy) it’s sweet but unusual

FerriswheelsKissesandLilacs · 13/01/2026 14:57

Seems like you're having issues with your child no longer being a baby. YABU.

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2026 15:01

My son (22) calls me Ma. Don’t know where he picked that up from. Can’t remember when that started. My DD calls me mum, again don’t remember when.

TiredofLDN · 13/01/2026 15:01

I have a video of the day DS called me mum for the first time. And we never heard “mummy” again.

he was 18 months old. 😂

count your blessings

Toddlerandthecat · 13/01/2026 15:01

DS5 has called me mam since he was around 3.5 (although he did call me mama until this point), unless he wants something. "Bruh" or "bro" are also current favourites.

My four youngest ds (4) calls me by my first name none of the others do just him 🙄he thinks it's funny. Although if he is upset and needs me it's back to mummy so I guess he's just a windup

Ilikesundays · 13/01/2026 15:03

Mine still call me mummy, they are both over 18 and think it is hilarious

My daughter calls me Mummy and she’s 48.

drspouse · 13/01/2026 15:06

DD started when she was 4 (copying school friends I think, though possibly even nursery!); DS is 14 and still doesn't.
If we go to a public place/school/a lesson together DD asks if she can call me mum and if she asks I say yes (usually if she says it at home I don't answer, partly because she says it when she's cross so it usually sounds infuriated).
I still call my parents Mummy and Daddy and I'm in my 50s but we are posh.
Interestingly DS goes to a school where I imagine no child has called their mum Mummy over the age of 3, and he has a much stronger local accent, whereas DD has posh friends and doesn't have such a strong accent, but then DS cares not a jot for peer pressure and DD is all about "the year 8s do this".

Pfpppl · 13/01/2026 15:07

16 year old DS started referring to me as mother about a year ago. He thinks it's hilarious. But if he is in a panic and wants/ needs me he reverts to Mummy. I've asked him to still write Mummy in my birthday/ Christmas cards, even if they say Mum on the front!

Mumstheword1983 · 13/01/2026 15:09

It got younger and younger. Probably around 7/8 with first then around school age with the next 2. 2 year old still calls me mummy.

Marcipix · 13/01/2026 15:09

Mine stopped calling me mummy when very young, about six, due to peer pressure.
By 20 he was back to saying mummy again. I like it.

lessglittermoremud · 13/01/2026 15:10

My now 5 year old switched to Mum by the age of 3 because he has older brothers.
I don’t think I even noticed into a family member said about it.
Occasionally I’ll get called Mama if he’s tired but sadly none of them call me Mummy anymore and haven’t for years (ages 5, 11 and 13)

Nothankyov · 13/01/2026 15:10

Oh no! I get what you mean. Mine still call me mummy or mama. The youngest is 9 (turning 10 next month) so I guess I’m lucky.

Franpie · 13/01/2026 15:10

My 16 year old has started calling me either mother or my first name.

I remember the loss of mummy, I hated it, probably around 7. Annoyingly, they still say daddy 😡

Nannyfannybanny · 13/01/2026 15:13

I always called my late DM mum, father was father.. DH mother was always mother.... very business like, never warm and fluffy.. DS s.call me mother (I am very soft and fluffy though) none of my DKs ever called us mummy and daddy. I have middle class friends in their 70s, who still call their parents mummy and daddy

Oldglasses · 13/01/2026 15:13

Probably a similar age. Now in their 20s I get derivatives of ‘mum’ like ‘Mummo’. Or sometimes ‘mate’ from DS 🙄 then I started calling him mate (like, it’s alright, mate) occasionally and he told me off 😂 DD uses my real name when she wants to annoy me.
My neighbours growing up always called their parents by their first names - they all had an amazing relationship so it’s got nothing to do with closeness.

Hankunamatata · 13/01/2026 15:13

I don't ever remember being mummy. Definitely never had a conversation about it

Elektra1 · 13/01/2026 15:16

DD (21) still calls me Mummy and at this point, always will. Her brother (24) called me Mummy till he was about 11 and since then has addressed me as Mum, or sometimes “m’general” or “bruh”.

I’m 49 and still call my parents Mummy and Daddy, but they insisted on it when I was a child/teen so that’s just how it always has been.

Avaximitis · 13/01/2026 15:17

Branleuse · 13/01/2026 12:52

Mine call me bruh and fam.

Oh yeah, "Fam"!
We get called that too by 14 yr old DS.
Also "Blood".

skippy67 · 13/01/2026 15:18

Fancyahobnob · 13/01/2026 12:55

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

Yes.

J3001 · 13/01/2026 15:19

I've always been called mam

NetZeroZealot · 13/01/2026 15:19

Mine are 24 & 27 & still call me Mummy. Plus a rather unglamorous but affectionate nickname that I won’t share as it’s very outing!
