And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:

Mummy, mother, mamadre, mum, ma, mothERRR. Dd is 15 and I get all the options.

Yes.

No, it isn't. You get to be called what you prefer.

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

Yes.

@Stompythedinosaur nailed it in the first post.

This isn't a hill to die on.

Mine stopped calling me mum when they were very little. They started calling me by my name 🙂 so it was oh Pauline can I have more toast etc etc. No idea why they did that but they were very unruly. Now they are all grown up, and call me a mixture of my name, mum or mamma (again, no idea why although it makes me laugh).

Sunloungerhogger · 13/01/2026 15:46

I can’t remember what age I stated calling my DM mum instead of mummy but I do know she probably felt exactly as you do - for a while she would abbreviate my name (it doesn’t really abbreviate) to make a point whenever I called her mum!

Kirbert2 · 13/01/2026 15:47

My 10 year old still calls me mummy for now. I know it won't be for much longer now!

SatsumaDog · 13/01/2026 13:25

Mine are 17 and 15 and still call me mummy. I always called my mother, mum. I never remember using mummy. No idea why.

Exactly the same here! Still Mummy.

My colleague used to call her 93 year old mother, mummy.

BoudiccaRuled · 13/01/2026 15:52

I've specifically asked mine to call me Mum. At 18 and 15 they still choose Mummy. It's a bit weird, I think, but nothing I can do about it.

RampantIvy · 13/01/2026 15:54

Where I live it is very unsusual to still call your mum mummy once you are at secondary school. Other teenagers would take the piss massively.

Janie143 · 13/01/2026 15:55

I'm Mumsy to adult DCs

Sorry about double post

whatsthatbloodycatdonenow · 13/01/2026 15:56

My 19 yr old calls me Mummy but only when she wants something 😂

Saltedporridge · 13/01/2026 15:57

My DD called me ‘Mam’ from the beginning. She’s a grown woman now and I’m still ‘Mam’.

Newlysinglemumma · 13/01/2026 15:57

I have always been mumma never mummy and now my 9 year old calls me mum and I hate it I always wanna be mumma!!! Luckily my 5 year old still calls me it

TreeDudette · 13/01/2026 15:58

You wait until they kindly explain that they no longer need you to come and put them to bed in the evening and they can just go to bed when they tired.... That one was tough!! She was right though, nearly 15 year olds don't need tucking in (although she does let me do it now and then for my benefit and sometimes she comes and tucks me in when I'm tired and want to go to bed early!)

Natsku · 13/01/2026 15:58

My 7 year old still calls me mummy (when he's not calling me bro, that is, or sometimes big fella). My 14 year old stopped calling me mummy maybe around 6 or 7 years old, she started calling me mama instead and still calls me that.

ThatGreenFawn · 13/01/2026 15:58

From about 4 or 5 I was mum. Im back to mummy now when the now teens want something!

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/01/2026 16:00

My 15 and 19 yo still call me Mummy, unless I tell them off about something in which case its 'Awww, mooom...'

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/01/2026 16:00

DS is 21. Teens I became Purple or Mother. Still calls me Mummy if he wants something (as I do to my own mum who is 85!)

moto748e · 13/01/2026 16:03

I had no idea this was a thing! But "Mummy" voiced by an adult always reminds me of the hilarious The Out-Laws (re-made in English as Bad Sisters).

Leopardspota · 13/01/2026 16:07

Mine called us mum and dad as soon as she saw Bluey. She also says ‘mama’ but sadly no longer ‘mammy’. I still call myself mammy.

SlayBelle · 13/01/2026 16:07

Mine are 12 and 9 and still call me mummy (or mumma) at home, but in front of their friends they call me mum!

TheCosyRain · 13/01/2026 16:10

I’ve been Mum since DD was about 2.5 (she’s just turned 3). I think I’m in a minority that I actually prefer it. Yet I’ve no idea why I prefer it 🤷🏼‍♀️
