To think I can't return this

I bought someone an expensive water bottle as a Christmas gift. Today they handed it back to me and said I should return it because its only single walled so condensation develops on it when they put icy water in and I should try and get a refund. Partly my bad, it didn't claim to be double walled and I didn't think of it when buying, for me it doesn't matter as I just fill from the tap and keep it in my bag on my desk. They maintained this water bottle is not fit for purpose and should be returned under distance selling laws. I don't think I have grounds to return it on this basis. I'm not sure what to do, they insisted they didn't want me out of pocket for something they can't use, but what should I do? I'll happily take it and use it myself if they don't want it. I can't return this item can I? I know this is trivial!!

All these unwanted gifts seem crazy to me, what a waste of time and money.

Oooonoooo · 12/01/2026 14:11

So rude ! Keep the bottle and don't bother getting another present again!

It was a shop on ebay, didn't look like a big business but it is a branded bottle. I suppose I could request to return it but its been used (does still have box) I just feel like I can't as I don't have grounds to

I think you are right op. It was fit for purpose, it just wasn't the type this person ungratefully decided they require.

I'd keep it and use it - but do NOT replace the gift.

It was unbelievably rude of the recipient.

Bearbookagainandagain · 12/01/2026 14:24

It doesn't claim to be insulated at all, so on that basis your friend's claim around condensation is odd. It's meant to be a fancy water bottle, even if they say it keeps liquid cooler for "longer" it doesn't really mean anything since there is no reference point.

The grammar on the packaging is wrong but it could be an older version of their export packaging in English.
From the website, they're trying to play on words a bit, "keep it cool for long" is as vague as "keep it cool for longer", and wouldn't be a shocking mistake to the ear of a foreigner.

I think that's the plastic version, I bought the stainless steel - eta sorry I didn't see there was a previous post saying you have one of these. It could just be GJ are not that great, I always thought they were synonymous with great design and I could take that for granted

Edited

I think you said earlier the seller looked like a small gift shop (rather than an individual). Why would they buy an expensive water bottle like this and sell it off at such a discount? That’s not good business sense at all, is it? And if it’s an individual, why would they have spent so much on a water bottle that they never intended to use and then sell at a massive loss?

It’s far more likely they are trying their luck.

Bluedenimdoglover · 12/01/2026 14:33

£40 for a water bottle, really? - I'm afraid you've been had in more than just it bring unsuitable because it's single walled.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/01/2026 14:35

I would just keep it but don't get them something else, obviously they are expecting something else because they said they don't want you to be out of pocket, which you wouldn't be as it wasn't for you.

TinyFlamingo · 12/01/2026 14:37

They CAN use it they just don't want to - how ungrateful and extremely precious..I'd just use it. This is not a reason to return it!

Poodlelove · 12/01/2026 14:45

They are so rude.

Well getting everything thing in their bag wet doesn’t sound very user friendly.

Get your money back. They have a point. It should have been double walled. This would bother me.

Why should it? Double-walling increases the weight and reduces the capacity. I like single skin metal water bottles sometimes - I won’t drink out of plastic and glass is heavier and impractical. I don’t use them for iced beverages so no issues with condensation.

000000hello · 12/01/2026 15:15

Who did you buy it for? They sound very rude and I wouldn't be buying them gifts again.

She’s bought a water bottle, she doesn’t, want it. She’s sells it on eBay. That used to be exactly what eBay was in the olden days. Nobody’s is going to look on eBay for a specific water bottle and then buy it for the same price as the shop is selling it for.

She would rather have £40 than a water bottle she doesn’t want.

Emmz1510 · 12/01/2026 17:11

Unless it claimed to be double walled and actually isn’t, I doubt you’ve any grounds to return it unless as someone else said it’s amazon or similar who are accept returns pretty easily. Even then I expect you’d need the packaging. I think the person just doesn’t want it and wants to seem considerate but actually doesn’t give a monkeys if you get your money back or not!

Hattermadness · 12/01/2026 17:26

I would definitely see about getting my money back but I would just tell this person that the company refused, and I would keep the money for myself. It's a drink bottle ffs, if someone was so kind to buy me something like that that kind of price I would graciously accept and not complain!

If she is so desperate for one that doesn't have condensation and keeps your drink cold all day, I fully recommend the Sho Guzzler, but I wouldn't be buying it for her, let her buy it herself!

TangledUp679 · 12/01/2026 18:11

I just had a search for the seller on eBay and they look very reputable. They've been selling on eBay since 2009, have 100% positive feedback, 3.9K sales and only four negative reviews in that time (and none of those are about fakes). It really doesn't look like they would knowingly sell a fake item. Selling brand new items for less than the RRP doesn't make a seller dodgy, despite some of the comments on here.

I would definitely email Georg Jensen and see what they say about the typo on the box. But to answer your original question, no I wouldn't return the item if it turns out to be genuine. Keep it for yourself and you won't have lost anything. It's not fair on the seller to return it IMO.

TangledUp679 · 12/01/2026 18:11

Deleted - duplicate post.

TangledUp679 · 12/01/2026 18:31

Actually, I'm completely convinced it's genuine. There don't appear to be any fake Georg Jensen water bottles floating around the internet. It looks like a really nice bottle, keep it.

Tillow4ever · 12/01/2026 18:34

These days people use Vinted for that. The op indicated it was a small business. No-one buys a £60 water bottle (really thought that sentence would stop there) that they don’t actually want to then sell as new for £10-£20 less.

Sorry, thought I hit quote to @Tulcan thetr!

No I left the bottle and the box

You’ve obviously already told her you can’t return it so then OP. How did she take it?

I didn’t even know you could sell non-clothing items on Vinted.

People do sell things on eBay (and Vinted!) for less than they bought them for. All of the time. Things that they don’t want. The seller can’t go back to Australia and return it. So she’s selling it. Maybe she hasn’t got a separate personal eBay.

Dogmum74 · 12/01/2026 19:38

You can’t return a used water bottle. I am presuming this is a Stanley cup you bought on eBay, it is probably fake. Report the seller to EBay for item being fake

I think you need to read OP 's posts.

MyMiniMetro · 12/01/2026 20:04

Is your friend autistic? This is not what you do when you get a present. Especially for a small present like a water bottle. If they are a good friend I would be inclined to point this out.

Either way, tell them that you are not returning it (no explanation why not) and if they don’t want it they are welcome to donate it to a charity shop. Then don’t buy this person a present again.
