Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Do you live in Catford? It was a trend round that way, not just on weekends either.

Good heavens no! I live in a naice town in the north of England!

Sadly, sans Waitrose, but we do have a Booths.

Sorry but these manky people that go out in their jammies are just downright idle.

If you're going to say that you get up and shower and put on make up you can make the effort to put on outdoor clothes.

HarpsAndViolins · 11/01/2026 13:32

The only time it's OK is when camping or caravaning, and you're nipping to the onsite shop for bread or milk in the morning

It is fine. So many people do it. Who cares if a few people silently seethe.

They absolutely do not silently seethe. They come up to us demanding that we do something about it, I tell my staff to say they’ll call a duty manager because they don’t get paid enough to enforce a dress code. My favourite dress code code complaint was from a woman who objected to a five year old dressed up as Batman. No way would I tell any mini superhero that they need to wear their civvies in public but she expected me to 😂

I agree. The “rules” people have about pyjamas are ridiculous. They are simply another type of clothing.

I don’t wear pyjamas. I find them too warm in bed. I usually go to bed in whatever t-shirt I’ve been wearing at home that day. New day, new t-shirt. If I haven’t got round to showering yet at the weekend and I need to pop to the shop, I’ll wear the same t-shirt. Nobody knows I slept in it, and presumably that’s ok? I wear joggers or leggings, but presumably this is ok because they are usually one solid colour, and not pattered with hearts or teddy bears or whatever else slouchy trousers need to have on them to define them as pyjamas.

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

I have just come back from the shops (fully dressed) and it is cold and wet out there. If you did go out in your PJs any cosy feeling they had would very quickly disappear and you would probably be soon wishing you had put on proper clothes and a warm coat before setting out.

What is the distinction here? That it’s not “lazy” not to put “proper” clothes on when you are camping?

You seem to want to set things to suit you, specific times, when in reality it's easy enough to slip something on, even over your pyjamas, to go to the shops or, better still, make sure you have basic stuff like bacon and eggs in, bought earlier in the week.

Living up to your name there!

Which I did, and I was truly thankful for it! 😊

Why can’t you just get dressed?

Unpaidviewer · 11/01/2026 13:40

Gross. Invest in some lovely loungewear that is acceptable to wear outside. I have a wool trouser and jumper coord which is super comfy but still quite smart. Perfect for a cosy Sunday morning or an overnight flight.

Have a quick shower or a wash, get dressed into loungewear and do as you please.

To use a favourite word of an old teacher of mine, it’s slovenly.

Tesco whoosh
Deliveroo
Uber eats
Just eat

All these are your friend to get groceries delivered to the house.

What on earth are you thinking even going out?!

Tadpolesinponds · 11/01/2026 13:41

If we can't even be bothered to get dressed, western society is doomed. There are other signs of us being doomed. You may have noticed some of them.

Wingedharpy · 11/01/2026 13:42

I just send one of the below stairs staff.

What kind of wool? I love cosy wool items and this sounds quite a nice alternative to my Christmas jimjams.

I wear pyjamas like leisurewear, not for bed, and put on bra and knickers underneath, so maybe I just need something less obvious to fool.my fellow Sunday morning shoppers.

Excellent idea. Then I could send them off at dawn to the nearest Waitrose and they'd be back in time for brekkie.

Bit to cold out for PJs anyway

When I see someone in obvious pyjamas I don’t think, oh they’ve had a shower and got into clean PJs to go shopping. They always look like they’ve slept in the PJs, along with I assume knickers also slept in. It’s smelly and rank.

There’s so much loungewear around now which looks acceptable to wear if that’s your thing. Just please shower first!

PandorasSockBox · 11/01/2026 13:47

No, this is just not acceptable.
The country's standards are already on a slippery downward slop as it is, it takes 5 minutes to dress.

I guess it just feels different, as you're also walking to and from shower blocks, not dressed for the day yet
