Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:31

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Foundation every day for 38 years certainly would.

What are you basing this on?

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 11/01/2026 14:18

turn my stomach a bit seeing people in dressing gown and pjs. There are always a few questionable stains down the front too. Bwoak

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 14:21

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast which was actually lunch in the end.

I'm still fully dressed but will shower and hair wash later.

It's also bedding change day and a clean nightshirt tonight, too!

Whoo!

I'm very glad I didn't succumb to sullying my lovely comfy jimjams with supermarket germs! 😊

b) who wants outdoor public germs on their indoor nightwear?

That is a very good point!! 😩

Well done, you've totally put me off the idea! 😂

I haven't read the entire thread but this is exactly why I don't go out in PJs. I have clothes I sleep in, and I have clothes I lounge around the house in, and neither set goes out into the outside world with it's weird germs.

Anyway, glad you've resolved your situation 😁

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

Well wear day wear in bed then. Plenty of leggings which are acceptable outside (ie for running) and would be ok to wear in bed. Just in case ;)

Hallywally · 11/01/2026 14:23

It’s a bit manky to schlep about unwashed/no clean underwear/no deodorant on etc and especially to leave the house like that.

Xmasbaby11 · 11/01/2026 14:28

I do love not having to get dressed immediately in the morning and consider it a real treat to get to 10 or 11am in my pyjamas. However I wouldn't feel 'right' being in them all day and do like to feel fresh, get washed and dressed albeit comfy clothes. I think there are so many comfy clothes and loungewear now, there's no real excuse for going out in public in actual pyjamas. I used to see parents in pyjamas on the school run and was shocked.

I agree with pp saying any cosy feeling is gone once you leave the house anyway, regardless of what you're wearing!

You could get a few groceries delivered. The extra cost might be worth it to maintain your coziness. You wouldn’t even need to go out.

I've totally come round to the outside/inside way of thinking. I'd no more wear pyjamas to go shopping now than I'd wear a ballgown to bed!

If you don't wish to give up the cosy vibes, suggest you put jeans on OVER the pj bottoms and a suitable coat over the top. Then when you are home you can unpeel those and be quickly back in bliss-mode.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 11/01/2026 14:32

Laziness is a slippery slope.

Hemlineindex · 11/01/2026 14:37

What are you expressing here? Herd acceptance and acknowledgement of 'monkey see, monkey do'?
To go forth and create a Sunday morning community trend?

Not acceptable at all. We are moving into the world of AI - the 21 st century is not about remaining a Luddite, in whatever form.

When I see someone (and it is always a woman) dressed in her nightwear, my thoughts are that she has not showered and stinks from sleeping in that gear the previous night.

It signifies bad form, bad etiquette and bad for everyone else who has to stand nearby.

Empower yourself in other ways, this isn't original, creative or sane.

Miranda65 · 11/01/2026 14:40

No. Why not just plan ahead, as for every other meal, and buy bacon and eggs when you're shopping on Thursday, or Friday, or Saturday. It's not difficult.

DinoLil · 11/01/2026 14:40

And that's why Deliveroo was invented!

Eggs last for ages as does bacon, can be used for many different recipes just add them to your shopping.
when I see someone like that I think yuck.

Somebody ought to invent Delivereverywhere because Deliveroo certainly don’t.

Have you seen the film "Idiocracy"?

No. It takes minutes to put joggers and a top on.

ERthree · 11/01/2026 15:48

I love my jammies and spend most of time in my house in them, i can achieve so much housework in them, they are like my superwoman clothes. Hell would freeze over before i lowered myself to go out in them. Up your standards.

AgnesMcDoo · 11/01/2026 15:51

How hard is it to throw on a track suit

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:33

Why do you wear uncomfortable clothes? Maybe that's the real problem, ie your clothes aren't comfy.

Get some big comfy knickers, some elasticated waist trousers in soft fabrics, some soft comfy jumpers and your life will be transformed!

ShowOfHands · 11/01/2026 15:55

I've done a complete about turn on this recently. I think I'd much rather see people in their lounge wear than in threadbare leggings which not only show what you had for breakfast, but also your underwear and often your skin as you bend over to get your sliced granary from the bottom shelf. I actually don't know that it's remotely better than a pair of loose pyjama bottoms. I'd never wear either but I don't think one's better than the other necessarily.

I also stood behind somebody in the petrol station queue just this week who bent over to get something off the bottom shelf, their top lifted up and they had literal shit stains up their back. So no, day clothes does not mean clean.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/01/2026 15:58

Johging bottoms and a coat over your PJs. Job done. Also protects PJs from the outdoor germs and keeps you warmer!

(If I know I have to have to take my youngest to the tram stop the next day, I will sleep in a tracksuit 😂 I’ll only be sitting in the car so doesn’t really matter!)

Who sleeps in knickers? Grim!

How is sleeping in knickers any more grim than sleeping in anything else? I think it’s grim having your bare muff touching your pyjama crotch! But that aside, so in your world they are out knickerless in pyjamas they’ve worn all night. Thats even grimmer!!
