Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

b) who wants outdoor public germs on their indoor nightwear?

That is a very good point!! 😩

Well done, you've totally put me off the idea! 😂

Yep @BoxingHare my first thought was my cosy indoor attire will be contaminated by the outside 🫣😬

Jady12 · 11/01/2026 13:53

It just screams benefits and council house so no. Absolute low class pov

Boolabus · 11/01/2026 13:54

Surely it's for situations like this that deliveroo was invented? No need to venture out at all.

As for me I've never even ventured as far as the bins in my pj's. I've been up gone for a run, cleaned the house and cooked dinner and yes, before people ask, I am feeling very smug 😂

When I see someone in obvious pyjamas I don’t think, oh they’ve had a shower and got into clean PJs to go shopping. They always look like they’ve slept in the PJs, along with I assume knickers also slept in. It’s smelly and rank.

There’s so much loungewear around now which looks acceptable to wear if that’s your thing. Just please shower first!

Who sleeps in knickers? Grim!

I love blustery weather!

Me too.

But not when I'm wearing PJ's.

shhblackbag · 11/01/2026 13:56

I'm not sure it's attention seeking. But I agree it's a bit off. I'd never seen any adult in a shop in pjs or onesies before moving to London in the 2000s. I always thought it was strange. Always in the 24-hour Tesco.

Girasoli · 11/01/2026 13:56

I refuse to go any further than the bottom of the garden in pjamas. I tried going to the corner shop in pjamas once at university as it was fashionable and felt uncomfortable the whole time. I am also a bit fussy about where I would go in tracksuit bottoms!

BackwaterBob · 11/01/2026 13:56

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/01/2026 11:37

Get dressed. Nobody will ever know that you haven't showered unless you had night sweats wearing said pj's.
I also think sports clothing should be banned from supermarkets. There's a large Sunday morning contingent who come into our local Tesco wearing muddy rugby kit or dirty jodhpurs and riding boots.

At least those people had done some sport.

When I become queen of the world, I’m going to ban all sportswear as casual wear. Sportswear is for the exercise/activity only.

I see you went to Asda but I can tell you that
your alter ego was in Sainsbury’s Morecambe at around the same time. She looked super comfortable wrapped up in fleecy dressing gown. And pj’s and totally out of place. I have been pondering what she had on her feet as could not see behind the self checkout.

Glad you got dressed!

Ew its gross. Since 1987 I've never set foot out of the door without foundation and eyeliner and I'd not dream of going anywhere without showering my lower half and getting changed out of nightwear.

I despair of what this country is becoming and the lack of standards and self respect that some folks have. Sorry not trying to be mean.

Edited

Slapping on makeup isn’t a sign of cleanliness at all. And showering just your lower half only makes you seem dirtier in my book!

🤣

This is a mountain I will die on.

Wearing knickers in bed is gross. Only acceptable when on your period and needing a sanitary towel overnight.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 11/01/2026 14:01

Have some self-respect. I worry about the mental health of people wearing PJs outside the house.

Coralinescat · 11/01/2026 14:01

I wouldn't look twice at someone in pyjamas in a supermarket on a Sunday morning.
However, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. It would somehow feel like my privacy was being invaded.
That's just my personal hangup though.
You clearly feel confident enough to do it so good for you.

DrPrunesqualer · 11/01/2026 14:02

Gross
People wandering around in what They've slept in
No thank you

Those poor shops workers having to put up with that lingering smell

seasid · 11/01/2026 14:04

I never understand this mentality. I will automatically judge you and think you’re lazy and dirty if you’re out and about in pyjamas. If you want to be comfortable - put a tracksuit on. It takes 30 seconds to put clothes on. There is no need to wear pyjamas and I think anyone who wears pyjamas in public are attention seeking.

I’ve been depressed to the point that I would be in bed all day every day and leave my home maybe once a week/once every two weeks. But you know what I did those times, I ensured I was clean and presentable in outside clothes.

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 14:04

I have (very) occasionally put the bins out wearing jammies.

But only when I've forgotten it's bin day, I've heard the lorry, and there's been no time for the full cleaning and dressing experience to happen.

Who gives a shit if you go in your pjs? Fuck people saying it’s inappropriate, you’re covered, probably more so than some actual “dressed” people. Cue all the people saying ewww you’ve slept in them blah blah….you’ve only wore them less time than “appropriate supermarket wear” go and give zero fucks

staringatthesun · 11/01/2026 14:06

You need Whoosh deliveries!

I once accidentally went out to a hobby group in my slippers, but they were the kind that look like Uggs so I think I got away with it... (and indeed that was why I forgot I had slippers on!)

I think wearing foundation every day for 38 years is probably a vicious circle.

The makeup eventually fucks your skin, so you don't want to leave the house without covering it up.

If you're cleansing properly that simply isn't true. As told to me by a dermatologist.

Bluebigclouds · 11/01/2026 14:12

I voted you are being unreasonable but (depending on your PJ's) if you put a big winter coat on no one will know?

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 11/01/2026 14:12

Mistletoeiggi · 11/01/2026 11:38

The answer to that is to keep the pjs on under your clothes. So when you what home you can be back to comfort in a superman style second.

This has just reminded me of the time my friend did a whole day's work in her pyjamas, with other clothes over the top 😂
To explain - this came about because there was overlap between work and leisure. She had thrown some clothes on for an early morning quickly-doing-some stuff, with the intention of then going back to bed. Work were short-staffed and did they "since you're here, could you work?" and she couldn't bring herself to admit that she wasn't even really dressed 😬
