Nursery teachers snarky comment

CheekyTealFawn · 09/01/2026 23:17

I’m livid, wondering whether to bring it up or just leave it if I’m overreacting.

DD is 2 yrs 9 month old, and just started nursery today. She’ll go 2 days per week, 7.30am-6.30pm.

I work two jobs (one evening and one Saturday per week), as I am studying 30 hours per week for my BA in English, which I do on my childcare days, in nap times, and every free evening I have. So, I could really use every minute of help I can get.

I dropped DD off at 8.30am no problems. When I go to pick her up, I get there at 6.20pm. I see I have two missed calls from the nursery. I ask why they called, worried, and the manager laughed and said “because we want to go home.” I was confused, and said “oh, I’m so sorry, I thought pick up was before 6.30?” And she pulled a face and said “yes, but it’s Friday and your daughter is the last one here, and she has been waiting and asking for you and wondering why she is the only one”

All of the staff had their hats and coats on waiting by the door when I arrived. DD was also sat by the door with her hat and coat on looking out the window waiting for me. it’s made me feel like the worst mum, and extremely embarrassed as I felt like the staff were all looking at and judging me. My daughter loved her first day, seems very happy there, but I don’t know whether to say something to the manager about it?

I understand it’s Friday and of course the staff want to go home, but I didn’t initially want Fridays, but they made me pick that day since it was quieter and we’re only part time, to make room for more full time children on the other days .

i don’t know what I’d say, and I don’t know if mum guilt at leaving my daughter there last is making me more sensitive, but now I’m anxious to leave her there until 6.20, even though I could really use it since I’m constantly playing catch up with my university work because I’m forever lagging behind due to not being able to afford enough childcare.

am I being sensitive? Should I say something? If so, what?

You really can't do any of it when your daughter is there? When she sleeps? When she's playing etc??
I have 4 kids and I don't remember on days I spent with them spending absolutely all of their waking hours doing thing with them constantly.

You do you, there is nothing wrong with that but the reasonings are based on the schedule you created.. Which again is fine but it's said like you have no choice.

I'd switch centre and do 2 days that aren't Friday..
Forget about the staff think about her waiting around with no one to play with. If you're ok with that part then carry on 🤷‍♀️

I certainly hope you didn’t raise your children to be as spiteful and rude as you are.

You said you did OU, did you actually try to do any studying when your kids were awake? We live in a flat as that’s where my office is the living room, play room, and dining room. There is nothing actually going in my brain when she is awake and in the room with me. She naps for an hour maximum, which I use for chores, because i would rather her go to childcare for 2 days so I can spend the other 4 days with her completely present and do fun things together, so her earliest memories are not “mummy was always stressed and on her laptop”. I’m not going to argue with you over what I do and do not have time for, nor my reasons for her childcare hours or why she is in it. That’s not at all what my original post was about and isn’t something I feel guilty about. And besides, It’s soooo strange that you keep insisting you know my schedule and how to fix it and what I’m capable of better than myself

When you’re on an extension for an assessment that is due soon things become less flexible.

You said it’s fine to use childcare twice but finished the sentence with a comment that you’d feel bad for your child to have a dig at OP.

It’s irrelevant whether other people finish work early on a Friday, OP doesn’t because that’s the day the nursery gave her. Then another dig referring to OP’s DD as a poor child. The last child in the nursery gets undivided adult attention (at least they should) and plenty of children love this time because they can get their favourite toy to themselves. Tough luck if the staff want a cheeky early finish, they’re paid to be there until their finishing time and should actively be doing their job up to that point, not standing around ready to go home. People are entitled to use the childcare hours they have, regardless of the reason they need or choose to, and someone always has to be last.

A roster might work if the staff are happy to take a pay cut for it since they’ll be doing less hours. Not sure I believe you’d feel bad for someone who needs to stay at work until the end of their paid shift though considering you’re more than happy to make OP feel bad 🤨 I might of missed it but I don’t think the OP stated how long her DD was the only child in the nursery for, so the “for that long” comment is yet another dig.

Your last paragraph is yet another attempt to make OP feel bad. Does that make you feel better?

Thank you !!! Honestly, such a silly post. Though I feel bad for poor Bandit because they clearly have a lot going on and they need unnecessarily shit on other mums, completely irrelevant to my original post, to make themselves feel better 😢

Picking up at 6:20 is fine. Don't pick up at 6:30 though as you won't get a handover because by the time they've done that it will be after 6:30.
We used to get the last two or three children ready to go at about 10 minutes before closing but we'd sit and read a book with them not just leave them standing there.
Your DD was probably upset at being last to be picked up but someone has to be last and I doubt they made her feel you weren't coming.
Speak to the manager, get her to clarify the hours and then say you are busy but will always pick your daughter up before closing time. Ask about Thursday but with their attitude they'll probably call you on Thursday too. Maybe give it a couple of weeks and see if they stop being ridiculous about pick up time but if it carries on I'd look for a different setting.
It's really too bad if the staff want to leave early, they are paid until 6:30 so tough.

Eleven hours is a LONG day for her in childcare though, especially if she’s the only one there at the end of the day.

That’s not helpful. Well done you if you never had to, but some people require their children to be in childcare for those sort of hours. Of course everyone would prefer not to but with working/ study hours and commutes either side, it’s not an option not to have their children in childcare for that length of time.

Definitely agree, I’ll always do early so I can see how her day went. I think I’ll do that, I’ll give it a chance since maybe as it was the first day they thought I’d show up at 6.30, and wanted to clarify, and maybe they made a poor joke. Let’s see!

That’s a ridiculously long day for a child to be in childcare. You say you need it due to work and studying but if that was me, I would have deferred my studies until my child is school age in this situation as it’s not fair on her. She will also be picking up constant bugs for the foreseeable and will probably have to skip a lot of days anyway which will make keeping up with your studies very difficult.

What absolute twaddle. My DD and most of her peers did 7.30-6 4 or 5 days a week in nursery and they do the same in school. It’s a perfectly standard amount of childcare for working families.

There was one member of staff at DD’s nursery that was like this, made a big drama that DD was usually last. It was a very small setting and we moved her there at 4 years old for her last year at nursery (we moved house-were at a much better setting before but had to
leave and this new one was in the school grounds of the primary she was going to so it made sense to stick it out).

If we’d had more time there I’d have made a fuss but I just ignored it. DD was perfectly happy with it, she knew what time she was picked up and didn’t mind being last. But they always had her coat on and made such a “thing” of it all. They advertised 7.45-17.30 all year but really seemed to think no-one should be there more than 9-3 term time. Frequently in holidays they implied they were doing us such a huge favour by being open. Utter knobhead really that couldn’t run a business if their life depended on it.

The care itself was absolutely fine, DD was happy there. But it was a bit of a car crash of a place in some respects.

I’d have your eye on an alternative setting at @CheekyTealFawn just in case this one won’t work out. I couldn’t have stuck this one out for more than the 9 months we needed.

Going by your own post above @FancyCatSlave , I dont think it’s so standard to have kids in childcare for such long hours. Otherwise the staff wouldn’t have made such a big thing of it. I question why have kids if you’re going to outsource their care for the majority of their waking hours.

Why not find another nursery and say what happened as a way of pointing out that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by you..If the new nursery backs you up snd agrees it was dreadful behaviour then maybe that would be a good place to go instead. I think the nursery staff doing whst they did was appalling. It shows a complete lack ofcdedication, care or professionalism. If you grt away from there perhaps you should call them out publicly.

Look, if you’re happy with your life choices then just continue doing what you’re doing and ignore the comments from nursery. The fact that you started to is thread and keep saying you felt guilty and like “the worst mum” makes me think that maybe deep down you know now is not the right time to do your studies if it means your daughter has to spend so much time at childcare.

It’s not at all that I felt guilty about university. It was about them making me feel like the worst mum and their comments, and I was wondering if I was being overly sensitive at their behaviour or if I was right in being furious about it

I was thinking about speaking with our last childminder and seeing what she thinks about it! She lives round the corner and we bump into each other often. It’s a good idea to bring it up to other nurseries, as if this happens again I can’t see us lasting long here

I'd be furious. Do they understand that they are being paid - by you and / or the government- to be open? Do they know that working generally means doing your job rather than fannying off to the pub just cos it's Friday? Do they know what a contract is?

Complete fucking pisstake.
