If Trump offered you £1 million to vote for your country to become part of US, would you?

This is hypothetically one of the options available to Greenlanders.

We're Scottish. I say no, DH says take the money and move.

Sorry, for some reason I can't enable voting. I get a No Entry sign

Can’t believe people would turn down the money!

£100.000?
Won't buy a lot of education or healthcare. Or a fancy house in Denmark or USA if you relocate.

No, because much as I’d like the million pounds, seeing Trump ranting like a spoiled toddler because he hasn’t got his own way would be priceless.

That's what I thought! I've give up this money just to piss him off (well, doing the right thing is a reason as well)

IDontHateRainbows · 09/01/2026 23:11

Yes, for a million I would. That would fund my emigration to somewhere entirely different.

britinnyc · 09/01/2026 23:12

Probably but I live in the U.S. and, Trump and his BS aside, I love it here.

That said, I am outraged at the idea of my tax dollars being used to bribe people from Greenland so I guess that actually skews my vote to no. Even though it isn’t $1m it is still crazy and corrupt to contemplate this.

WearyAuldWumman · 09/01/2026 23:12

No.

If you can settle. Most people in Greenland won't settle well outside Greenland.

CunningLinguist2 · 09/01/2026 23:13

No. Cheeto fucker can jog on

Peridoteage · 09/01/2026 23:13

No on fucking principal! Trump needs to get his grubby paws off, Greenland belongs to the Greendlandic people.

Its so disrespectful to think he can just have it because he wants it.

He should be impeached for breaking international law. And kicked out of Nato for openly threatening another member.

Smartiepants79 · 09/01/2026 23:07

Move where? Nowhere will be safe from this orange lunatic if we don’t do whatever we can to stop him.

Yes, this is my argument with DH.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 09/01/2026 23:15

Yes, then id move. UK is doomed.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to bed now but will pick the thread up in the morning.

There is an element of him thinking he knows the cost of things when he has no idea of the value.

And then he doesn’t pay his bills so he doesn’t even know the cost.

What if there were a referendum and the Greenlandic people said they wanted to join the USA? They have the right to self-determination, no? Just like the Brits decided to leave the EU— their choice to do so even though it was a dumb decision and they’re suffering economically from having done so.

MeouwKing · 09/01/2026 23:24

I'd take the million and bugger off to Canada

I'd take the million and bugger off to Canada

ThorsRaven · 09/01/2026 23:28

Nah, no, nope.

(1) Trump wouldn't pay up - he has form for failing to pay.

(2) Whatever deal he makes will be shit for Greenlanders; plus he'll make it even shittier further down the line because Trump is incapable of understanding the concept of a win-win. If the other side thinks they've got a good deal, then Trump thinks he's lost or not got enough.

(3) I've had 2 different types of cancer so I wouldn't be getting affordable health insurance, and £1 mill ain't gonna go very far in the US for-profit health industry if/when it comes back

(4) £1 mill isn't enough to make up for loss of rights, country, culture, identity, language, community, home, etc that would be lost. Gaining money for 1 generation but losing your country forever isn't a win. That £1 mill won't make up for generations of substantial support provided by Denmark.

X123x321X · 09/01/2026 23:28

No. Imagine how you would be treated if they bought you.

Anyway, if everyone had a million quid, houses would probably cost 2 million very soon, and rent would be 10K per month.

Ohpleeeease · 09/01/2026 23:29

A million wouldn’t go very far…

Playingvideogames · 09/01/2026 23:30

England is not for sale.

Have you seen America at the moment?

Not a fucking chance.

Exactly this. Even with a million pounds you'd be living in a basket case of a country. I honestly would not want to.

Tiedbutchorestodo · 09/01/2026 23:33

yes. In a heartbeat.

I love America and it would make visiting easier and I could always move so the money went further if the local economy adjusted.

I really am about to go to bed but just had a quick look at the thread. I think this is the essence of my original question. If enough people accept Trump's bribes, is that democracy or not?

Sorry, whole new question. Night everyone.

For the UK, that would be about £67Trillion. For context the entirety of the national debt is under £3 Trillion. So if it went to the government and then was distributed, that would pay off the national debt, give enough cash to fix literally every broken road/hospital/school etc, probably to cut taxes by a good chunk as we could have a massive national wealth fund and then still give every individual half a million quid.

Just back of the envelope:

3 Trillion - National Debt
New hospitals, schools etc - NHS capex was about £14Bn. So I can't see it would cost more than another £3-5 Trillion to sort everything out.

That would leave £60 Trillion. In my imaginary scenario, I want £34 Trillion left to give everyone half a million quid. So £26 Trillion left for the national wealth fund. At 2.5% draw down (very conservative) that would give £650Bn per year. Total UK tax revenue is about £1 Trillion so they could cut taxes by 50% and still have much higher revenue for day to day spending.

It would also bankrupt even the USA I think so not a scenario I anticipate is likely to come to pass.

Anyway, the long and short of it is that while I have absolutely no desire to join the USA, it is enough money that it would be with considering - but presumably it would have to be very carefully managed or you'd just end up with hideous inflation.

In 2026 Greenland cannot legally sell itself to another country like the United States without Denmark's involvement and consent.
While Greenland has extensive autonomy its status is governed by a combination of the Greenland Self-Government Act of 2009 and the Danish Constitution.
