He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

@Purplebunnie the cat tin was a gift from my brother some while ago and made it into the final pack ! It's by a well known illustrator whose name escapes me at the mo. But absolutely cannot keep crackers in a round tin, imo. I think that would actually drive me mad 🤭

I have this image as a tea coaster on my work desk!

Boudica70 · 10/01/2026 19:45

Growing up, did anyone elses mum/grandma, have the Quality Street tin filled with random buttons?
I used to play for hours with my mums! And what's more, I never put them in my mouth, or up my nose! 🤣

LittleGreenDragons · 10/01/2026 19:38

😂😂

Please tell me you've found it.

(also here for the tin pictures)

Not so far 😒

Find some random computer leads in a drawer and chuck them out in revenge. And, yes, I'm a man

He made a mistake and he's put it right. What more do you want?

It's a weird mistake though- I have never known anyone throw a tin away after a single use. It's a bad sign, he obviously is not a thinker.

Im a tin lover but strictly speaking, the tin is the food packaging. You throw the food packaging out.

Ive just finished a tub of chocolate mini rolls, which quite simply disappeared when Ilooked at them, so Im going to put the tub in the recycling.

OH would try to keep the tub probably.

I'm not sure I agree, people have always kept tins- I have some which are 30-40 years old with sewing stuff in them-how would they survive if people just threw them away?

Yes those people are me, I grew up in a household of tins, most people did in the 70s.

But ultimately it is the packaging for food, so technically why would someone who isnt tin aware think otherwise.

Crwysmam · 10/01/2026 20:07

My DH threw all my shoes away. We were decorating and I’d put them all in a large black bag. He mixed up the black bag with ones filled with rubbish for the tip. It has cost him a great deal of money over the years while I gradually replaced them all.

I would have been just as unhappy about a tin that was a gift from my son though so make sure he replaces it and some.

Purplebunnie · 09/01/2026 23:38

Where did you get the cat tin from? I am looking for a tin to keep cracker biscuits in and for some reason think it should be square or oblong,

Can you keep cracker biscuits in a round tin? Is it just me?

Emma Bridgewater do a cracker shaped tin.

It’s the thoughtlessness of it- I can’t stand it.
When I was pregnant with my youngest I became very ill the morning of my daughter’s 3rd birthday party with suspected food poisoning. I was wiped out for the day and left my mum in charge of the task of managing the party (He was a moron and I was basically a single married parent back then- there was no way I was risking my kids party being ruined by his incompetence), but he did presents when they got home with her as she didn’t want to wait and I was wiped out.
I woke up and was sad I’d missed her opening her gifts but thought great- at least he’s tidied the wrapping up. Then there were tears as Cinderella's shoes were missing, baby born was missing the dummy that came with the accessory pack and the box for hungry hippos was thrown away. THE ACTUAL FUCKING BOX. I went outside in my dressing down feeling like shit and found it trodden down flat in the bin. Shoes and dummy nowhere to be found. My knob of an ex claimed it was ‘packaging’ and it was ‘normal to throw packaging away’ and was told ‘I did my best, you should be fucking grateful’. So I resorted to find a Tupperware container to house the dozens of tiny white pea sized balls while the bloody thing sat on a shelf exposed forevermore.
And to top it off the bastard didn’t write down who bought what so I couldn’t send out specified thank you cards.
This is just one of the many examples of what his extent of parenting came to.

Zov · 10/01/2026 20:27

Am I missing something? It went into the bin earlier today....

Why can you not fish it out @beholdtheidiot ????

Zov · 10/01/2026 20:28

Also, surely most people - if they didn't keep the tin - would pop it in the recycling. Surely it's still out in the bin or recycling @beholdtheidiot ???

SheThinksShesAllThat · 10/01/2026 20:31

He is a man after all….. 😂🙄
My husband chucked all our daughters Easter eggs once after having a mad moment of ‘trying’ to eat better, it lasted about 10hours! I was fuming because I’d bought her a lovely cow egg from M&S so wasn’t cheap! He didn’t think anything of it!

Flomingho · 10/01/2026 20:38

My DH did something similar we had a lovely F&M tea tin, once the last tea bag had been used I found it in the bin so I rescued it and washed it as it matches a cup set I have.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 10/01/2026 20:50

Men just don't get tins.

MyOtherProfile · 10/01/2026 20:52

I do love a tin, but how do you keep them from rusting? I like to keep cakes in nice tins but when I wash them I find that after a while they get dots of rust, even if I really dry them.

Coloursingreydays · 10/01/2026 20:55

I do throw away lots of tins..... Don't see my h the point tbh

Theslummymummy · 10/01/2026 21:06

Why did he throw it away still with stolen in?

nice1rodders · 10/01/2026 21:27

It's a constant flow of crap coming in to our house that ends up in the tip at some point. I love my missus to pieces but this drives me up the wall. It's a tin.

Purplebunnie · 10/01/2026 21:34

@Catdaddy1978 thank you I will look there.

ThereAreOnlyShadesOfGrey · 10/01/2026 21:38

It would never have occurred to me that a tin with a lid was a cake tin.

And as nice as some of the decorative tins are, they just end up as clutter in the end really so need to be thrown out really.

Gowlett · 10/01/2026 21:43

Doing a toy tidy-up today, I couldn’t find a missing bag of toys that I hadn’t gotten around to doing before Christmas. Gone…

If it’s not in the bin, it’s not rubbish! (unless it’s a chocolate wrapper, crisp packet, empty can he’s left on the counter)

BuildbyNumbere · 10/01/2026 22:07

It’s a cake tin … get over it 🙄
