He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

Weird that he wouldn’t just ask if this is for keeping or for the bin (yes recycling police I mean the bin 🙄)

I have kept a musical M & S Christmas box (sadly not a tin) which we refill with chocolates made in moulds. (Shout out for M & S caramel, shortbread and chocolate crispies milk chocolate.) The tune gives away anyone sneaking a choc as @Vroomfondleswaistcoat says and always makes us laugh. We’ve had hours of fun with young children moulding the chocolates then poring over the illustrations to determine the time of day, the time of year, the animals and activities depicted. Love it!

I had to get rid of loads of tins when I moved house last year (recycling or gave them away) but I’m rebuilding! Christmas is a good source of tin collecting. I especially like French and Italian ones 😍

ToKittyornottoKitty · 10/01/2026 13:04

I think it’s worse than he took the last bit of Christmas stollen when it was your gift!

This made me giggle. Mine are in a rectangular tin from the chinese supermarket and i have a small black rectangular tin from m & s that was a xmas gift tin containing crackers.

I got a lovely new tin this year from la sablesienne. They also have a lovely "chat blanc" tin i am coveting.

Edited

Oooh I like that tin as well. I have cats so it has to be cats

Moneybum · 10/01/2026 14:47

Jellycatspyjamas · 09/01/2026 23:59

No, crackers belong in a square tin, cake in a round tin and tray bakes go in a rectangular tin. This may be why I have multiple tins in all kinds of shapes and sizes. My DC follow the tin rules to the letter.

You know that feeling when something has been missing from your life, and you are not quite sure what?

it was this. These tin rules. The heavens have parted, glorious sun shines down, epiphanies have occurred and all is right with the world.

thank you.

MagicStarrz · 10/01/2026 14:49

It's annoying but I can kind of understand it and he's ordered you a new one

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/01/2026 14:58

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/01/2026 22:34

Did he not see you open the gift?!

Ffs, I bought a cake this year just so I could keep the lovely tin it came in, I'd be royally pissed off if that was thrown away, never mind an actual proper tin that was a gift!

Was it the Waitrose Mother's Day Cherry Panettone?

I bought that for the tin.

Moneybum · 10/01/2026 14:58

I love this one

He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!
TwoSaturdays · 10/01/2026 15:01

@Moneybum I do too! Beautiful!

SparklyGlitterballs · 10/01/2026 10:25

I want to see more of your fancy tins. This is one I've kept over the years. The lid has a dent now, but I like it too much to throw it away.

I regret getting rid of my carousel tin! I think it was from Tesco.

Emmz1510 · 10/01/2026 16:45

Yeah he’s an idiot but at least he’s sorted it, Although I’d still be annoyed because him sorting it will have come out of the family money (unless you have separate finances, in which case great, I’m just going from our own set up) and wouldn’t really feel like a gift in the same way.

skippy67 · 09/01/2026 22:37

He made a mistake and he's put it right. What more do you want?

Well, she might want her husband to acquire a brain . . . .

Floundering66 · 10/01/2026 16:54

Sounds like he’s tried to keep the house tidy, made a mistake, apologised, replaced the item. I couldn’t be raging about this 😂

bilbodog · 10/01/2026 16:54

My DD bought me this from M&S in december - beautiful. My DH had better not throw it away! The panettone was lovely too.

He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!
Julimia · 10/01/2026 16:56

Its not the mistake thst matters its how its dealt with and how you move on from it that does. Come on he's doing sll the right things. Lighten up.

CrapNewYear · 10/01/2026 17:00

I'm shocked and stunned!

Most empty things in my house are put back where they were eg an empty milk bottle, juice carton, butter dish, toilet roll middle...

Let me clarify, not by me 😁

ButtonMoonLoon · 10/01/2026 17:05

I’m glad he has ordered you more!
I need some more cake tins - I’d love to see yours if you’re happy to share a link?

Biggles27 · 10/01/2026 17:06

I’ve only voted yabu simply as he has ordered another one to replace it, but is he a knob - yes! I’d be fuming too but I’d let it go as he has ordered another replacement

Life is too short to fall out over a cake tin but would I let him know how much he’d upset me - absolutely

You are not in the wrong but he has at least tried to put it right (not that you should be in this situation in the first place)

soupyspoon · 10/01/2026 17:10

Where do you all keep your tins, this thread is a nightmare for me as Im trying to declutter but I love a tin

Luckyingame · 10/01/2026 17:21

He rectified it, so stick your claws back.
Drama for a cake tin. 🙄

LydiaFunnyGums · 10/01/2026 17:32

Aintgointogoa · 09/01/2026 22:41

God I miss my tins....I could only bring small ones with me when I decamped from UK. I was especially fond of some M&S ones over the years. One had licorice sweets stamped out all over it and was a perfect sewing box. I would rather throw out the cake than the tin ! Silly man.

I can see why you miss those tins. They are fab!

DottyLottieLou · 10/01/2026 17:38

He's replaced it. Drama over. Move on.

MrsMitford3 · 10/01/2026 17:43

I love my christmas tins but there is an Emma Bridgewater in the sale that I am coveting. This is a sign that I need to buy it in case DH throws my other one away!!

Rituelec · 10/01/2026 17:47

I have to confess. I throw tins away!
