He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

He’s made a mistake, apologised and is rectifying the mistake. Why does he also need bashing on MN?

ShodAndShadySenators · 10/01/2026 18:52

This thread is reminding me about the ramekins thread. I was on that as the proud-but-embarrassed holder of roughly a gazillion baby food jars. I can't even remember why I was saving them, but thanks to the support of the MNers rallying round the poor souls whose houses were overflowing with ramekins (GU ones not included) I managed to heave them all into the recycling with a small cry of triumph. I also had plenty ramekins and got rid of half of those too, keeping only a few for puddings I still haven't actually used them.

I'm here to confess now that I have... a few tins. A pretty tin that can fit a sensible amount of stuff is a wondrous thing, and I'm not ashamed. There is a tin for every occasion.

I also would like to see OP's erstwhile stollen tin

Runnersandtoms · 10/01/2026 18:53

My mum gave my daughter a tin of biscuits specifically for her to use as a sewing tin afterwards. DH didn't get the memo and threw away the pretty tin without us realising until after the recycling was collected.

mummygranny · 10/01/2026 19:00

Made me smile your DH thought he was helping🤣
we have recently had our loft boarded and a new loft ladder fitted .
Anything not nailed down now finds itself in the loft now ad my DH is obsessed with moving stuff up there
I am sure me and our little dogs will wake up one morning in the loft xxx

He made a mistake and ordered a new one, what else can he do?

CountryMouse22 · 10/01/2026 19:03

I specially like the Italian, French and German/Swiss tins, such lovely designs.

LTB

Love it when the first post nails it 😂 he's redeemed himself slightly in immediately ordering new ones for you @beholdtheidiot but unless he bakes you some goodies or splurges on the really good expensive treats to fill them plus breakfast in bed/meal out at a place of your choice/whatever else you think is a fair and suitable punishment then I'm afraid you have no choice, its an absolute LTB 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

BeaTwix · 10/01/2026 19:08

I had hoarded a set of Collins Street bakery tins. They were airtight and stacked inside each other for storage. Holy grail for a baker in a small flat!

Last Christmas I took the big one into work full of homemade treats on a long Saturday shift. It had my name on the lid and the base. Some fuckwit either threw it out or nicked it before I returned to work on the Tuesday. I made it very clear that I was pissed off and didn’t bake for ages. Several people helped me search the staff room for it so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t there.

I relented in around September. Took the stuff in in a celebrations plastic tub upon which I’d written in huge letters on both the tub and lid “this might look like rubbish but I want it back DO NOT THROW OUT, Bea”

I found it in the recycling bin later that day.

When I get asked to bake now I refuse. If people won’t respect my containers I’m not spending time or money on them.

ErinBell01 · 10/01/2026 19:08

That's men for you. They live on a different planet.

Reevester · 10/01/2026 19:10

He’s already apologised and bought a new one. It’s all good. That is more than most other people would do. It’s a mistake. Mostly, yes, made by men.

FussyFancyDragon · 10/01/2026 19:11

I want to see the beautiful tins.

MrsHGWells · 10/01/2026 19:14

What a price winning knob, definitely ate the stollen and buried the evidence. Was DH not awake when Christmas gifts were given?
a flat stackable cake tin is a rare thing of beauty.. with everything going plastic or cardboard!
I save a few tins for sewing, stamps, buttons, photos and biscuit tins - just keeps food fresher than plastic tat storage.

flog him for his penance and find a lockable tin for your post Christmas treats

MyOliveStork · 10/01/2026 19:17

Say no more…. He’s a man.
He is buying you a replacement so not a complete idiot though.
always expect them to do stupid stuff like this…. They can’t help it!

mumofsevenfluffs · 10/01/2026 19:17

I kind of understand his logic but a decorated tin in this house would have been queried as a keeper or not. No immediate assumption of recycling would have happened but I’m glad he was able to replace it. Hopefully he has learnt his lesson to check with you about non everyday items in future

1stjan2026 · 10/01/2026 19:17

It was a mistake he's gone on to try and rectify.

BetterWithPockets · 10/01/2026 19:20

One Christmas, my DD, then about 9, bought me one of those M&S jugs with bulbs in (these were hyacinths, which DD knows I love), with her own money. DH threw the bulbs and compost away because he thought it was all rubbish. I don’t know who was more upset — me or DD…

FeralWoman · 10/01/2026 19:22

I’m in Australia. One of the major supermarkets here stocked a range of M&S foods for Christmas. Shortbread, tea, chocolate, Percy Pig lollies and Colin the Caterpillar lollies were some of the products. I was surprised by how many of the products were in decorative tins. It seemed weird to me. Thanks to this thread it now makes sense.

@PensionMention and @70isaLimitNotaTarget This judgy deer in the attached photo? He didn’t seem very friendly to me. Is he a regular feature for M&S or does he have happier friends sometimes?

PloddingAlong21 · 10/01/2026 19:30

Until reading this I genuinely never knew people had such a passion for tins. I would have thrown it too.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2026 18:07

The big plastic lidded croissant containers from Costco make great mini greenhouses for seedlings Smile

This is us now I've started trying to grow more...no plastic pots/packaging gets recycled unless we've had the 'can you use it' conversation 😂 but then we are from the generation of "ooh that's a nice tin" back when quality street and the like came in huuuuge tins!

😂 love this! And yes they roll out that judgy bastard on his (frankly, boring in comparison) tin every year!

FairBrickBiscuit · 10/01/2026 19:36

Haha what a nitwit. In his defense he is remorseful and has put it right immediately so you can let him off with a slap on the wrist.

LittleGreenDragons · 10/01/2026 19:38

meercat23 · 10/01/2026 18:31

I love Christmas tins too and always keep them. This year I bought a Pannetone in a lovely tin to add to the hamper I make for my daughter. She texted me today to show me a picture of the contents! All my leftover Christmas ribbons and labels! I now need to check the decorations cupboard to find the Pannetone.

😂😂

Please tell me you've found it.

(also here for the tin pictures)

Bettet than the Swiss choc box with the 5-legged AI Rudolf

UniquePinkSwan · 10/01/2026 19:39

I’d have thrown it away as well. I don’t keep tins just in case. Huge overreaction on your part

He made a mistake and he's put it right. What more do you want?

Collective rage and validation… in spades!
