My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

God I miss my tins....I could only bring small ones with me when I decamped from UK. I was especially fond of some M&S ones over the years. One had licorice sweets stamped out all over it and was a perfect sewing box. I would rather throw out the cake than the tin ! Silly man.

@Aintgointogoa

I have this cat tin and happy to send it to you if its one you miss?
I'm not attached to it can't even remember how I acquired it xx

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 10/01/2026 17:49

What a wally. No stollen for him, I hope.

Throwing away tins is a hanging offence in this house.

This thread gave me a chuckle, my Mother In Law asked me to take about 20 tins home with me after Christmas!
You know, the usual shortbread and cake ones. My Father in Law is a bugger for taking them out of the recycling and keeping them.
Never actually does anything with them, more a case of "Oh that will come in handy" He is a professional hoarder/skip surfer, and it causes my M-i-L a lot of stress.
She is as bad with food in the freezers & fridges (Yes 2 of each) that should have been binned ages ago, but I love them both dearly and given they are in their late 80s won't be here forever, so just quietly take home stuff to put in our bin or recycling.

I was This Close >< to buying a set of cake tins in TKMaxx (storage not baking tins)

Three tins , stacking , with a hare pattern .
Good for Easter , I thought .
I calmly put them back and walked away , knowing full well they won't be there next time I go in.

I mean at least he’s replacing it. That shows a good amount of contrition.

I had an exh who used to bin things that were clearly being used/ wanted.

Once he threw away some bath items that I was deliberately using slowly
over time as they were so nice. Because he didn’t think they were being used quickly enough 🙄 He’s also thrown away lovely photos of the DC that were expensive - I don’t normally buy photos at attractions but these were really nice.

Also, he knew I liked to keep gift bags, bottle bags and the like and would deliberately rip the up before binning so that I couldn’t!

I am so pleased to hear he is an ex. Throwing out photos of your children is unforgivable.

GreyBeeplus3 · 10/01/2026 17:57

I'm almost speechless but can just about manage this;
He will never ever ever make that mistake again
Will he?

Mine has bought M&S shortbread at Christmas over the last few years ‘for the tin’. He now has lots of lovely tins with deer on full of various screws, nails etc. we always ask each other do you want this for anything when it comes to any sort of weird or unusual recycling. I had a sandwich platter from Costco, off to the shed it has gone as the lid will make a good cloche for seedlings.

The big plastic lidded croissant containers from Costco make great mini greenhouses for seedlings Smile

My penfriend in Italy once sent me a Dolce and Gabanna Panettone. I would be gutted if the tin was thrown out.

BeBreezyPlum · 10/01/2026 18:12

Cake tins are the most bourgeois thing imaginable. Worse than doilies and fish knives. You should be thanking him.

StrikeForever · 10/01/2026 18:15

YANBU to want to keep an especially nice tin, but you ABU to be “raging”. The guy made a mistake. A little irritated is a more appropriate level of response.

I love a tin,but tbh I love a beautiful box more ....

I have a beautiful box with washi tape in , one with different inks in, one with homemade tags from old Christmas cards - even if I used a tag per present for the rest of my life I probably have too many tags Blush

I use my Jo Malone boxes (very sturdy) for so may things - one is currently under my bed housing my tablets , another stores my special cards from DS and DH

Charlize43 · 10/01/2026 18:26

I have one that looks like this. I use it to keep the Jaffa cakes in.

Well quite. Cook makes us fresh cakes every day. Any leftovers are, I suppose, eaten by the staff, but it’s so middle class to want to store cake.

Our fruit cakes for Christmas are fed with brandy and decently wrapped in grease proof paper.

meercat23 · 10/01/2026 18:31

I love Christmas tins too and always keep them. This year I bought a Pannetone in a lovely tin to add to the hamper I make for my daughter. She texted me today to show me a picture of the contents! All my leftover Christmas ribbons and labels! I now need to check the decorations cupboard to find the Pannetone.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 10/01/2026 18:33

He should have asked first.

Hankunamatata · 10/01/2026 18:34

Easy done. My mum buys me loads of products in fancy tins (that go in the recycling) as I just dont have room for

I have to confess. I throw tins away!

Nooooo at least take them to a charity shop, pleaseeee

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 10/01/2026 18:39

I have some vintage cake tins that belonged to my granny who died in 1989. I’d be very upset if someone threw them away. I feel your pain

Granddama · 10/01/2026 18:39

Honestly, Poor Bloke. He clears up the kitchen and you yell at him over a tin!!! You don't know your born,

OliveHenry · 10/01/2026 18:44

I'm a sucker for a nice tin, and keep all my teas in Monty Bojangle cats.

This is a recent favourite - bought in France only partly for the biscuits it contained.

I also have a stash of M&S shortbread tins which I use if I'm taking things elsewhere - then it doesn't matter if they don't get returned.

He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!
Chillijamtoday · 10/01/2026 18:45

Delphiniumandlupins · 09/01/2026 22:59

He was trying to hide the fact that he's finished the stollen (there were 6 pieces left yesterday) and thought if the tin was gone you would forget about it. He's greedy and a twit and will never clear up in future "because I always get it wrong"

OMG are we married to the same man? So fucking annoying!

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 10/01/2026 18:46

I had an ex who binned half a roast chicken once rather than use it for leftovers 😱
