He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

What a dick!!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/01/2026 22:34

Did he not see you open the gift?!

Ffs, I bought a cake this year just so I could keep the lovely tin it came in, I'd be royally pissed off if that was thrown away, never mind an actual proper tin that was a gift!

Leftsidefacing · 09/01/2026 22:36

What weirdo throws a tin away? Mine would never throw any tin away. He loves them more than I do.

soupyspoon · 09/01/2026 22:36

I buy things just for the tins as well.

skippy67 · 09/01/2026 22:37

He made a mistake and he's put it right. What more do you want?

Aintgointogoa · 09/01/2026 22:41

God I miss my tins....I could only bring small ones with me when I decamped from UK. I was especially fond of some M&S ones over the years. One had licorice sweets stamped out all over it and was a perfect sewing box. I would rather throw out the cake than the tin ! Silly man.

You mean in the bin bin? Not the recycling? He’s a savage.

Gliblet · 09/01/2026 22:49

YANBU. I have vintage Cadburys and Oxo tins, a Mere Poulard tin and a gorgeous Italian biscuit tin that some of DH's relatives gave us a couple of Christmases ago - it's huge and had about 8 packs of biscuits in it, I spent the week after Christmas force-feeding offering biscuits to every guest we had until the tin was empty and I could cuddle it like Gollum and find somewhere for it to live. DH knows that if he binned any of them without very good reason there would be Consequences.

pinkpony88 · 09/01/2026 22:52

I’m also a tin fan! DH bought a whole job lot of useless items at an auction because it included two vintage OXO tins which I fell in love with 🤣

5foot5 · 09/01/2026 22:54

YANBU I love a nice tin. Or box. And don't get me started on baskets. I am not allowed to get any more baskets.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/01/2026 22:55

Oh hell no. I'd want that out the bin, dent pressed out AND a new tin to make up for the trauma.

Tins are treasured here, by both of us. We're tin-aholics. Buy stuff just for the tin quite often and that Your Honour, is why i eat too many biscuits, I swear

Letsgocamping67 · 09/01/2026 22:57

Guessing the greedy pig polished off the cake and binned the evidence.

Delphiniumandlupins · 09/01/2026 22:59

He was trying to hide the fact that he's finished the stollen (there were 6 pieces left yesterday) and thought if the tin was gone you would forget about it. He's greedy and a twit and will never clear up in future "because I always get it wrong"

Gowlett · 09/01/2026 23:04

Tins. Love them. Whenever it’s “there’s no food” Look in a tin!

Yes OP this needs a better explanation. Do you have a recycling bin and if so does it take metal. And if so, why was he putting metal in the bin bin?

QuickPeachPoet · 09/01/2026 23:08

It's thoughtless - my mum collects nice tins and uses them for sewing things. But as he has realised and bought you another one, remaining angry is a bit counter productive isn't it?

ReadingSoManyThreads · 09/01/2026 23:22

What a fucking idiot!

caffelattetogo · 09/01/2026 23:29

I’d keep both - the bent bit will straighten out. He sounds like a dick.

I don’t think you’re reading the room quite right.

TwoSaturdays · 09/01/2026 23:34

Can we have a photo of this tin please, taken from its pristine side?

Where did you get the cat tin from? I am looking for a tin to keep cracker biscuits in and for some reason think it should be square or oblong,

Can you keep cracker biscuits in a round tin? Is it just me?

Ariana12 · 09/01/2026 23:50

I voted you're being unreasonable because although what he did was stupid, he's bought you a replacement straightaway and doesn't seem to have gone all aggressive on you. Plus you're now getting more stollen. Enjoy!

No, crackers belong in a square tin, cake in a round tin and tray bakes go in a rectangular tin. This may be why I have multiple tins in all kinds of shapes and sizes. My DC follow the tin rules to the letter.
