He threw my beautiful cake tin away!!

My daughter bought me a gorgeous cake tin for Christmas and so I filled it with stollen and other Christmas treats.

I came home from work earlier, made a cup of tea and went to get a piece of stollen and the tin was no where to be found. Husband came home and I asked him where was the tin - in the bin he said!!

Apparently he thought the tin was a tin that came with the stollen and once empty would go in the bin! So he’d bunged it into the bin where it’s git a bit dented and looks a bit shit as the lid is bent.

Hes remorseful but absolutely thinks that the tin was a single use item. What a fucking Idiot!

He has ordered me a new one as DD told him where she got it from as I was raging but who throws cake tins away!!

AIBU, is it really such an easy mistake to make????

You mean in the bin bin? Not the recycling? He’s a savage.

This.

landlordhell · 10/01/2026 08:15

But what did he do with the stollen????

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 10/01/2026 08:19

@rwalkerhopefully you take the celebration tub somewhere for recycling? Green King pubs fundraise with them. There are many Greene King pubs!

landlordhell · 10/01/2026 08:20

I am also a tin fan. I have a gorgeous tall amaretti tin that is tourquise and have had it in my kitchen for years and a beautiful tin fronted wine case that is art deco- my DD bought me the wine because of the tin!

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 10/01/2026 08:23

You are SO NBU.

PensionMention · 10/01/2026 08:25

Mine has bought M&S shortbread at Christmas over the last few years ‘for the tin’. He now has lots of lovely tins with deer on full of various screws, nails etc. we always ask each other do you want this for anything when it comes to any sort of weird or unusual recycling. I had a sandwich platter from Costco, off to the shed it has gone as the lid will make a good cloche for seedlings.

Thanks
I didn’t know we’ve got a green king local and I’ll be fishing a few of these tubs out the recycling for them

Please feel free to dispose of something personal to him once you have your replacement tins, and when he asks, deny all knowledge. Yes, I am petty. Your H is really dishonest and I don't buy all this 'he's so scatty' business. It was a gift that you opened in front of him. He threw it away because he wanted to hide that he'd been a greedy fucker with the stollen.

blythet · 10/01/2026 08:38

skippy67 · 09/01/2026 22:37

He made a mistake and he's put it right. What more do you want?

Exactly!
also if it gets dented and out of shape by being put in the bin it doesn’t seem great quality. Maybe why he assumed it was single use?

blythet · 10/01/2026 08:40

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 10/01/2026 08:23

I’d agree if he hadn’t bought her a replacement but he has. No harm done

I’m still lol at this, savage 😂

I don’t think you’re reading the room quite right.

shes right though, lighten up. It’s just a tin, sounds like hoarder territory here. Husband trying to tidy up, made a mistake, rectified it. Move on.

Wow

Write those divorce papers right now.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 10/01/2026 08:55

Why was he throwing them away if they weren’t even empty?

Parsleyforme · 10/01/2026 08:59

Please can we see photos of the nice tin

UncannyFanny · 10/01/2026 09:04

Well obviously no woman has ever thrown something in a bin that a man wanted to keep. Ever.

Washed in hot dish water. Rinsed in boiling water.

Growing up, one of the old HUGE Quality Street tins was our 'first aid' tin. 🥰

Do they not rust?

Amd if you put something other than the original advertised treat in there, does it not produce disappointment every time you open it and there is something different inside?

And, how do you remember what is inside? A label? I might give a tin some grace if it had room for a label. Instead there would be ugly tape over the tin. And also, if there were biscuits etc inside, the label would need to be removed for washing.

But mostly I just hate opening tins. They never open easily and I have to brace them against my body to pull them open and biscuits fly everywhere. Is it just me??

We got some gifts in those Christmas bags with handles . When DH was tidying he left them.by the back door. I asked him why, he informed me he was going to throw them in the bin. Perfectly good Christmas bags which can be used next year 😬
Mind you, I have only just trained him to actually put dishcloths in the washer instead of leaving them to fester in a heap!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2026 09:09

I have a tin of M&S shortbread ( with the picture of the Judgey Looking Stag) but once it is empty it will be recycled .
DH used to keep batteries in one but I got him a proper battery case which is 100 times better .

In my defence , my DMum was a hoarder , every container from tins to ice-cream tubs to Ariel Pod tubs she kept and filled with tat . Wool , buttons , old zips , newspaper cuttings , out of date vouchers .
So I'm not a fan of collecting tins for the sake of it .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/01/2026 09:10

Dh once wanted to chuck a couple of M&S Christmas shortbread tins, that I keep on purpose since they each just fit a dozen of the fairy cakes I make for the Gdcs’ birthday parties, and equally, a double batch of the cheese straws I make for any family get together (they always vanish PDQ). Needless to say, he was put straight PDQ!

I don’t even really much like shortbread, but I did buy a new tin this year, and have chucked one of the old ones, since TBH it was getting a bit manky-looking.

Probably not the best thread to bring this up, but I really dislike tins.
Awkward to open, dubious to clean, and I don't know what to put in them other than sewing kit.

i keep most tins as they’re really handy for taking cakes and biscuits to meetings, gatherings, etc. I’m not sure why you think they’re dubious re washing. Just wash and dry out properly. I always use grease proof paper to line mine too.

Edited

I’ve got tons my mother inherited from her mother. I keep my badge collection in one and keys in another. They’re not rusted.

@Purplebunnie the cat tin was a gift from my brother some while ago and made it into the final pack ! It's by a well known illustrator whose name escapes me at the mo. But absolutely cannot keep crackers in a round tin, imo. I think that would actually drive me mad 🤭

The illustrator is Simon Drew and i was so taken with that cat tin that Ive just ordered one from ebay!!!

Mumoftwo388 · 10/01/2026 09:18

I love a good tin! So even if it was a tin that the stollen had come in, I would likely still be raging.

I can appreciate he is now putting it right by replacing the tin but I still vote YANBU he should never have binned the tin! 😡
