Military conscription

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 09/01/2026 10:25

There is lots of talk about if ww3 happens then military conscription will happen

This is basically people who sit in an office safely saying we need to either send ourselves or out children to fight and die in horrible conditions

Am I unreasonable to think that anyone who thinks this is a good idea

They should be the first ones to sign up and to lead by example

Any politicians who think this is a good idea, there children should be the first to go

Russia is literally sending troops in wheel chairs and crunches to the front line

So age, disability and gender will not be a problem for anyone who supports any conscription policy's, they can go first

Also the UK will not be invaded, we are not Ukrainian, If we were more like Ukraine I would be more in favour of this as the country itself is under threat

We wouldn’t go to war, obviously, because it could be suicidal. The USA would destroy us, we have to be their ally.

On the conscription front, a conscripted army is a terrible idea, surrender is a worse one.

Impossible situation isn’t it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody wins here. There is no palatable solution to any of it.

A few months ago a veteran on breakfast TV said it wasn't worth it. Let that sink in

Yet I knew many, sadly all now departed, who said that it very much was worth it.

Why? Ukraine is a modern war.

Because there hasn't been? Unless you can show me where anyone in a position of power has suggestion we would consider conscription? I follow the news pretty closely, and every statement I've seen is that we wouldn't.

Glitchymn1 · 09/01/2026 12:32

There are so many ‘get outs’ for a start we may as well surrender now.

Iceshine · 09/01/2026 12:33

War is war if it happens it happens, but right now it's not happening, so let's just get on with life as usual.

I mean some make me laugh with oh I will have as stock pile of food, batteries etc.
Well its not gonna do you any good if bombs are being dropped, and you have to run and leave it.

All the scare tactics are getting boring now.

Mauhea · 09/01/2026 12:34

Hand me a gun and I'll gladly defend my doorstep but like fuck are me and mine going to another land to be drone fodder.

Most people in the UK are so unfit they get out of breath if they have to get out of the chair.

I’m ex-military and I don’t think anyone in their right mind ever WANTS conscription…..

But the shit has to have really hit the fan for it to become a thing here….as in a sophisticated, armed force has actively mobilised to invade.

Then we are left with 2 options:

  • conscript soldiers and fight a war
  • don’t conscript soldiers and surrender to an invading force
Neither are nice options, but one is better than the other. Without conscription in WW2, German forces would have absolutely invaded mainland Britain. We are a small nation with a small military (even smaller now because of the genius idea that was the “Army 2020” restructuring and redundancy plan 🫠 which those of us serving at the time said was a fucking moronic idea) the numbers simply don’t work if we were to go to war imminently.

Army 2020? I was in during 'Options for Change" in the 1990's! Governments do love a nice bit of military emasculation.

What happens if the US invade Greenland? Interesting times OP. War is never the answer though. I think the having nuclear weapons is the best defence. I bet Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if they hadn't given them up.

This is what I'm worrying about currently. It's the death of NATO regardless. And is our American-supplied software-based kit going to function?

Most people in the UK are so unfit they get out of breath if they have to get out of the chair.

Really the depressing part is that wouldn’t matter. People who are unfit but want to send younger, fitter people could still step up instead.

Have you ever tried to cross a park whilst a Park Run is in progress? 😂

Paulrn · 09/01/2026 12:38

As my user name suggests I have some experience 37 years worth to be exact. And reading this I am wondering why I bothered. Any one who wouldn’t defend the country should have a close look at Russia and its controlled states. Can you imagine moaning about the government on MN and the door knocks and that’s the last your family ever sees of you. Or I’m on benefits well no you can work in this factory or work camp. You really don’t understand your privilege or the cost of that privilege in terms of being ready to defend it. And for what it’s worth I would go back because I still consider our freedoms are important even if it means that we have to pit up with people running the country down rather than getting off their arse to make it a better place. Rant over.

I’m showing you a modern war where it is happening. How does the modern part change it for Ukrainians and Russians for that matter?

Army 2020 was even more of a joke because they quickly realised it was a fucking stupid plan when you’ve now not got the manpower to organise a village picnic let alone anything else…..and then started sending out letters to all the people who were within 5 years of discharge offering the world to come back 🫠😂
Naa, your alright mate taa. 😂

Dollymylove · 09/01/2026 12:44

There's apparently 48,000 Ukrainian men living in this country.
Send them and leave our kids alone

Fupoffyagrasshole · 09/01/2026 12:45

id never fight for this country or any country tbh - i only care about my own family and myself tbh and we as long as we are safe i literally dont care where we are once we are together - any hint of that happening we pack up and move somewhere else.

Most people are the same - at the end of the day you are out for yourself and your own family / kids! nothing else matters. going to the front line as an inexperienced soldier - youll just end up dead - then what the fuck happens your kids.

You can bet the fucking billionaires and powerful people in charge wont be going to fight and neither will their families! so its a big no from me.

my friend always refused to get her sons their Israeli citizenship even though she's from there and when they were around 16 she stopped bringing them there even to visit out of fear that they would be expected to do their military time - it's just not worth it

Conscription

Or being invaded by a country with a history of human rights abuses, torture, forced abduction and murder.

Look at what's happening in Ukraine. Children abducted, prisoners of war raped and castrated, civilians murdered, women sexually abused

Sometimes you have to pick the lesser of two evils.

Not the case at all, life in 80pcnt of ukraine is as normal minus some occasional air raids but people are so used to them bot everyone goes into the shelters anymore (i have family members doing business there and long time friends). Nightclubs, restaurants, supermsrkets, shopping centres,mc donalds, etc are open as usual- check google maps m, even dental treatment british tourists are going there as usual. What u say is spread by british media to keep funneling your taxpayers money to the ukranian laundrette.

Branster · 09/01/2026 12:51

OP you are living in a dream world.
I can't imagine anyone would willingly want to be conscripted.
But if your country and your family are under threat, surely most decent people would want to do all they can to protect themselves and their freedoms.
It's a different stress and energy when you are under direct attack.
It's called being patriotic which, sadly, is not much in evidence of lately. I don't understand why so many British people are not proud of being British and willing to praise, improve and protect their own lot and heritage. You are labelled as far right if you so much vocalise strong support of your own country's freedoms.
Add to this the very large number of illegal immigrants who would not be interested in doing anything and would probably look to move elsewhere.
I also imagine a large number of people currently with some sort of serious medical issues would not participate because they simply can't.
I'm not sure who would be left for a conscription campaign. Age and sex would also play a role in selecting conscripts.
Also, you simply cannot say I don't want to do it. It would be mandatory. To avoid conscription you'd either leave the country, declare and prove some sort of medical incapacitation or you follow the required legal penalty (which would not be light).

MrsKateColumbo · 09/01/2026 12:51

My great grandparents had a 20ish yo son in 1939, they made him get a job (building trains?) That was on the "protected from conscription" list, very sensible.

My GDad ended up fighting but was a lot younger so only caught the last couple of years

This view is more palatable if the person saying it puts themselves up first.

MoFadaCromulent · 09/01/2026 12:56

Like fuck am I getting conscripted or letting my kids get conscripted. Time to find me whatever the modern equivalent of Canada is for my conscientious objection

Elbowpatch · 09/01/2026 12:57

Well, it worked last time.

nomoreforks · 09/01/2026 13:00

I think if there was compulsory consciption everyone and his dog would develop a 'mental health issue' which would prevent them from joining up. Plus the 'I have a neurodiversity so i can't fight' etc... Then anyone left would try their hardest to be a key worker in some form. Having lived through Covid I give up on the idea of community. People were so incredibly selfish in different ways.

PevenseygirlQQ · 09/01/2026 13:02

Why should my children, husband, brothers etc go to fight in a war that psychotic old men have caused?

Most people just want to live in peace and are dragged into war by power hungry men who have about 10 years left to live.

Hopefully the regular folk of the world make a stand we out number the warmongers in our millions!

momahoho1 · 09/01/2026 13:05

If things go completely crazy then you wouldn’t be writing this, you would want to play your part. It’s easy to be a keyboard warrior when it’s hypothetical. They will not need untrained cannon fodder, war isn’t like that now, we aren’t Ukraine as you said but we may need cyber security specialists, logistical experts etc. my own dc is in the military, 4 years of training and counting, still not qualified, conscripts really aren’t much use today
