To expect a takeaway to be delivered in the snow?

Never done it myself.

I see the takeaway driver going put though and I think is this a necessity to get someone out in bad weather to deliver you food?

Dont you have something in the house you coukd eat?
They say dont go out unless you have too. Our local.police are saying this tonight.

Is a takeaway really
necessary? Food for thought.

You wouldnt want to go out and collect, but your happy for someone else to drive to you in bad weather?

Surely if you have a takeaway in any weather it means you can’t be bothered to go and and get it yourself?

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2026 19:54

If there’s a weather warning the takeaway places should put a stop on it. It’s a health and safety issue.

Although I loved in Canada for years and they deliver in 5 feet of snow and blizzards. They’d laugh at 1cm.

Icouldwriteabookonmydisastrouslife · 08/01/2026 19:55

I think people forget drivers are still only human and unless they have a 4 wheel drive vehicle they ain’t Santa Claus and can’t use their sleigh to deliver a takeaway like Santa Claus delivers presents . It’s almost selfish really . Takeaways should do collection only on orders.

DoAWheelie · 08/01/2026 19:55

A lot of disabled people rely on delivery apps as their only source of hot food. Others may not be able to get out and shop and ran out of stuff.

Also the takeaways need the money - if everyone stops ordering when they are still open then they are losing money.

ilovesooty · 08/01/2026 19:55

Depends if the shop want to accept the order I suppose.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 08/01/2026 19:55

I dont get takeaways delivered but work uses motorcycle delivery people and I hate sending these young men (and women) off in bad weather.

Sirzy · 08/01/2026 19:56

It depends how bad the snow is. Ultimately if it’s not safe it’s for the company to say they won’t be delivering.

ClashCityRocker · 08/01/2026 19:56

I have a friend who does deliveroo and he loves going out in bad weather as he says you get much bigger tips because people feel guilty

WinterGardening · 08/01/2026 19:56

The delivery driver still has to earn money.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/01/2026 19:57

If the restaurant is open and accepting delivery and/ or the delivery company is able to find a driver to accept it than it’s fine to order. On Deliveroo/ Just Eat etc If you put in a take away order but then there aren’t any drivers willing to accept delivery your order is not accepted/ cancelled, nobody is being forced to deliver!

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:57

Yes but its a foul evening, surely you get that and people shouldn't be travelling unless they have too.

A takeaway is not an emergency.
Think of the driver.

I think the difference is the snow tyres though?

ScholesPanda · 08/01/2026 19:57

I think it's on the company not to offer delivery- the snow isn't that bad in most of the country though.

Unfortunately, I'd imagine a lot of the drivers are self employed contractors so if deliveries stopped, this is a day they get no money for.

I have a few neighbours who get food deliveries - they are young, not disabled and drive. Just too lazy and entitled to fetch for themselves or to cook.

IDontHateRainbows · 08/01/2026 19:58

So if the takeaway doesn't want its drivers going out in the snow they can close. However both the takeaway owner and driver want to be earning money so unless it's extremely bad weather they will probably continue to deliver.

Because they are used to it, it’s normal & the infrastructure is in place. No comparison.

LlynTegid · 08/01/2026 19:58

Someone is who ill or disabled I could understand ordering a takeaway and support, but not an able bodied person who could cook for themselves.

Nomoremening · 08/01/2026 19:59

Ideally they wouldn’t have to work in bad weather but many of them do want to. It might be different for in-house delivery drivers but I’m pretty sure for deliveroo etc they can opt out of working on any given day. The reason some choose not to exercise that option, even in bad weather, is likely financial need.

So I guess those who have chosen to work welcome the orders on snow days.

Presumably those who aren’t confident to drive safely in the snow or aren’t able to are ordering and they are hoping the driver who is coming has done their own risk assessment and has judged that they can do it with minimum risk.

Sesma · 08/01/2026 19:59

Maybe they want the work. Is it the red alert area or just a bit wet and snowy

Think of the driver.

The driver is trying to earn a living and is only paid for (and tipped on…) the deliveries they do. By placing an order you are helping ensure that they can also eat ;)

Jinglejells · 08/01/2026 20:00

Yanbu, I wouldn’t make someone go out in this weather too op. Would feel too awful. Surely some toast and a cup of tea you can make do

AgnesMcDoo · 08/01/2026 20:00

how is the driver meant to earn a living if everyone follows your advice

oocooloo · 08/01/2026 20:01

Tut tut, imagine ordering a takeaway not a week into the New Year. Healthy eating in 2026 my foot!

Other than that I wouldn't judge, since if the restaurant is happy to deliver, the customer is ok to order it.

But a BIG tip is mandatory during such weather surely?

MJstarterbefore40 · 08/01/2026 20:01

Well they're self employed so if they didn't want to work that day then they don't have to. They've chosen that in the hope they get paid, no deliveries no pay.

Think of his wages.

he won’t get paid if he doesn’t make deliveries
