To expect a takeaway to be delivered in the snow?

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:52

Never done it myself.

I see the takeaway driver going put though and I think is this a necessity to get someone out in bad weather to deliver you food?

Dont you have something in the house you coukd eat?
They say dont go out unless you have too. Our local.police are saying this tonight.

Is a takeaway really
necessary? Food for thought.

You wouldnt want to go out and collect, but your happy for someone else to drive to you in bad weather?

Where is all this snow

NE Scotland has had several feet of snow this week. All schools closed, trains and buses stopped, snowploughs struggling to make headway, villages cut off, farmers in tractors giving sick people lifts to main roads to reach ambulances, a Major Incident declared.

We just don’t get media coverage cos no one south of Dundee gives a toss.

Yes but its a foul evening, surely you get that and people shouldn't be travelling unless they have too.

A takeaway is not an emergency.
Think of the driver.

Surely it is their decision. Who am I (or anyone else for that matter), to make a decision for them?

If the police say not to travel unless it is necessary, and people decide to do that, it is up to them. Do you go out to every car on the road in this weather telling people they shouldn’t be doing it? Perhaps they deem it necessary because they need to work.

Understanding the levels of warning is also important. Currently the only warning in place which says you should not be on the road unless it is absolutely vital, is the red warning for wind in Cornwall. This is almost always combined with an advisory from the police not to travel at all. All other areas have a yellow or amber warning, which have nowhere near the same level for not travelling.

If the weather is terrible and I want a takeaway, I wouldn’t not have it delivered so that a driver doesn’t have to do their job, just the same as I don’t expect farmers not to be feeding their cows. Some jobs, you have to work in bad weather. If you choose them, you must expect that. I always give a decent tip though as I know how badly paid they are!

Perhaps the driver is thinking about paying his/her mortgage?

I dont believe that.

You don’t believe some people have to go to work to earn money? 🧐

Blablablablablahhhh · 08/01/2026 22:11

delivery drivers are - mostly - not on contracts where they have to work when they don’t want to. So if a delivery driver is out working in this weather, I imagine they really need the money and want you to order .

In any weather?

It takes a special kind of ignorance to not consider that some people are disabled, elderly, can't drive, or all 3 of these things.

Yes but lots arent They are lazy. Wonder why they bother putting kitchen in houses today.

Before food apps become available, people managed ok and people still worked and made money in other ways.

I am not a big poster but this has upset me

my husband delivers for takeaways as between his full time wage and mine we need extra money, it’s declared, our car is insured for the correct purposes and I can assure you he is not out there because he wants to be, more we need him to be.

Please don’t judge, what he earns covers the fuel, an income and the takeaway allows us food for free on top. It helps us eat some days

And how do they affect you?

Before vacuum cleaners became available, people managed ok to sweep their carpets with a broom.

Before washing machines became available, people manged to hand wash their clothes.

Before dishwashers became available, people managed to wash up by hand.

So now food apps are available and some people order food from them 🤷‍♂️

Leeds157 · 08/01/2026 22:25

won’t they miss out on income if they don’t have work when it snows?

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 22:19

What did they do before food apps?

It doesn't really matter what they did then. They don't do it now.

They deliver food.

Most of the delivery people on the apps are self employed and can sign in when they want to work - so they are choosing to be working.

Why do you have such an issue with it?

Are people who buy food lazy too? I mean, they could always grow their food themselves, keep chickens for the eggs and bake their own bread like the olden days.

Or, there’s a task someone doesn’t like doing (I hate baking bread) or is rubbish at (I can’t grow veg to save my life) so they pay someone else to do it. Just like people who pay me to tutor their kids and I pay my cleaner to clean my house. There’s nothing wrong with paying for a service.

Personally, I think takeaways in red warning areas should be shut and I wouldn’t order. But I’m driving to work in a yellow area tomorrow morning because my job can’t be done from home. This applies to loads of jobs, including delivery drivers.

One of my neighbours doesn't work but lives the life of riley. Lately she's been ordering huge boxes from Amazon, and ordering takeaways every night, and yes I do feel sorry for the drivers. Especially because she is perfectly capable of driving, but is just a very lazy woman. It's infuriating. Get it yourself! We are in the North East and have had almost a week of snow and ice. It's treacherous out there.

So you want the drivers to have no work? And the takeaways too? If she is paying for a service and someone else is choosing to provide it why is this a problem?

Xmasbaby11 · 08/01/2026 22:29

It's up to the restaurant to make a call on that. If people aren't going to come out and buy a takeaway, they will lose orders by not offering delivery. Where I am, they won't deliver if the snow is too challenging, but I live in a very hilly city and it's very area dependent - the flatter areas near the centre are nearly always fine.

Please don't be upset.

The OP rarely has anything positive to say about anything discussed on MN.

It's not personal, it's just the way they are.

A very quick AS will put your mind at rest Flowers

My dad’s first job was delivering groceries. In 1961 when he was 10. People having things delivered has existed for generations.

Good for him for finding a way to take care of himself and his family! I would hope he isn’t judging me for getting the odd takeaway delivered and I would never judge anyone for putting the hard graft in to keep the bills paid. This OP is ridiculous.

Yeah i always tip in bad weather

Please don't be upset by it, this user is truly one of the whiniest, most miserable users, they very rarely have anything nice to say.

That's fantastic that your DH has found a way to earn some extra money to support your household, it must be tiring doing it around his full time job asp, I hope things are easier for you all soon x

Pistachiocake · 08/01/2026 22:34

The way some people go mad if schools shut, they'd probably boycott any takeaway that refused to serve them.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 08/01/2026 22:34

Nomoremening · 08/01/2026 19:59

Ideally they wouldn’t have to work in bad weather but many of them do want to. It might be different for in-house delivery drivers but I’m pretty sure for deliveroo etc they can opt out of working on any given day. The reason some choose not to exercise that option, even in bad weather, is likely financial need.

So I guess those who have chosen to work welcome the orders on snow days.

Presumably those who aren’t confident to drive safely in the snow or aren’t able to are ordering and they are hoping the driver who is coming has done their own risk assessment and has judged that they can do it with minimum risk.

Edited

I'm just laughing at your kind thoughts that anyone would be doing a risk assessment as you describe. Work of fiction.

My dad’s first job was delivering groceries. In 1961 when he was 10. People having things delivered has existed for generations.

This is very true, my Grandparents met when my GDad was delivering the vegetables from the greengrocers he ran to my GM house...this was 1953...in December as it happens so not exactly sunshine weather...food delivery has always existed its just evolved over time

YesSirICanNameChange · 08/01/2026 22:38

The takeaway DH works for are brilliant and very sensible; they closed for deliveries in the snow last week and management support them to do so.

People do tend to tip better in bad weather, but some people become even more demanding and bigger arseholes than usual, finding whatever they can to complain about.

Are you a bit dim? My husband works for a company that is 2 years old, what did he do before that? Er worked somewhere else.

Its so weird you're keeping this going and have a weird negative opinion of people getting takeaways.

Completely irrelevant. They have food apps now, and people work for them. I don’t get what point you’re trying to make here at all. Unless you’re going off on such a tangent from your original issue and now trying to start a debate about something else?
