To expect a takeaway to be delivered in the snow?

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:52

Never done it myself.

I see the takeaway driver going put though and I think is this a necessity to get someone out in bad weather to deliver you food?

Dont you have something in the house you coukd eat?
They say dont go out unless you have too. Our local.police are saying this tonight.

Is a takeaway really
necessary? Food for thought.

You wouldnt want to go out and collect, but your happy for someone else to drive to you in bad weather?

I think it's on the company not to offer delivery- the snow isn't that bad in most of the country though.

Unfortunately, I'd imagine a lot of the drivers are self employed contractors so if deliveries stopped, this is a day they get no money for.

This. Plus disabled or people recovering from flu etc might not be up to cooking a hot meal. If the shop is open for delivery it's not unreasonable to use it. If shop shuts delivery driver doesn't get paid.

Your not advised to go out unless its necessary.
Somehow I am sure the drivers wont starve if they dont go out.

If you wont go and collect, why should they deliver?

They aren’t being forced to deliver OP😂

crazeekat · 08/01/2026 20:22

Maybe the delivery person can’t afford to not go to work cos of snow. Real life probs.

Have you actually got a warning not to go out in your area.

We're under an orange warning and at present all we have is some sleet...

The driver is choosing to deliver

Sesma · 08/01/2026 20:23

They might be like those hardy folks that are doing the Spine race this week, that's still going on and looks like lots of snow.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 08/01/2026 20:24

Do people understand this is a job they are paid for and choose to do?

If no one orders, they don’t get paid.

They choose to drive in the snow.

Not everyone can take unpaid days off.

Privileged much? How do u know what people are like? reality is many many people live hand to mouth Ona daily basis. Or they may eat, but can’t heat. Or can’t put gas in their car to do the deliveries. Some people don’t have the luxury of not going out. Define necessary. Ffs

Goldwren1923 · 08/01/2026 20:27

That’s ridiculous. It’s just snow. It’s not a tornado

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 08/01/2026 20:29

A lot of the delivery people don't have the luxury of getting paid irrelevant of how many deliveries they do so some would indeed starve if they are not out delivering the amount they usually get per delivery would not allow them a big cushion.
Unfortunate but true.

vanillalattes · 08/01/2026 20:30

If it's too unsafe to deliver then shops shouldn't offer it.

You can't complain about people making use of a service available to them!

Sesma · 08/01/2026 20:30

Where is all this snow

BlackCat14 · 08/01/2026 20:32

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:57

Yes but its a foul evening, surely you get that and people shouldn't be travelling unless they have too.

A takeaway is not an emergency.
Think of the driver.

I think it’s up to the employer to decide! And the driver for that matter.

SeenYourArse · 08/01/2026 20:36

I think you are forgetting a BIG thing here, the drivers may WANT and need to work! If they dont want to they can chose not to work that evening. They may need the money enough to want orders to be coming in.

Nezukokamado · 08/01/2026 20:36

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2026 19:54

If there’s a weather warning the takeaway places should put a stop on it. It’s a health and safety issue.

Although I loved in Canada for years and they deliver in 5 feet of snow and blizzards. They’d laugh at 1cm.

Oh my sweet summer child

MrsMiniver1942 · 08/01/2026 20:41

Purlant · 08/01/2026 19:52

Surely if you have a takeaway in any weather it means you can’t be bothered to go and and get it yourself?

Being pedantic it isn't really a takeaway if you don't take it away yourself.

What a privileged fucking comment. I've worked as a delivery driver on a food delivery app, going out for hours in the snow and rain because if I didn't then I didn't fucking eat.

You realise people live hand to mouth? People cannot always afford food and the ability to jump on their bike and spend hours delivering food is literally a way to feed themselves.

Dickhead comment

I mean you're right.

But. It also means the driver loses wages.

I have a few neighbours who get food deliveries - they are young, not disabled and drive. Just too lazy and entitled to fetch for themselves or to cook.

Yes I’ve got a neighbour who buys bread from the supermarket like a lazy entitled bitch instead of milling the flour herself.

Another one even uses a social media site called ‘mumsnet’ instead of writing letters or going out and meeting people on the village green. Lazy lazy lazy.

BillieWiper · 08/01/2026 20:54

If the company/rider accepts the delivery then they clearly should fulfil it.
I'd definitely try and give them a nice tip.
Lots of people might need deliveries in the snow so it's great if someone can provide it.

Sesma · 08/01/2026 20:54

The weather could be like this on and off for a couple of months, people can't just not work

Scottishskifun · 08/01/2026 20:57

Surely this depends on the snow level?

We've had 4-8ft drifts this week in NE Scotland no way is a takeaway getting through that some of the snow ploughs have struggled!

Many switched to collection only or closed with the heavy snow.

Seagullstopitnow · 08/01/2026 21:01

I'd never order in a storm or snow, I couldn't bear the thought of someone putting themselves at risk because I can't be arsed to go to the restaurant myself.
If it's raining I tip more to make up it a bit more bearable for them

JLou08 · 08/01/2026 21:03

Most delivery drivers won't get paid if they're not delivering. If they didn't want to be out they wouldn't be but they probably need the money.

Why is getting a takeaway “entitled”?
