To expect a takeaway to be delivered in the snow?

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:52

Never done it myself.

I see the takeaway driver going put though and I think is this a necessity to get someone out in bad weather to deliver you food?

Dont you have something in the house you coukd eat?
They say dont go out unless you have too. Our local.police are saying this tonight.

Is a takeaway really
necessary? Food for thought.

You wouldnt want to go out and collect, but your happy for someone else to drive to you in bad weather?

I have a few neighbours who get food deliveries - they are young, not disabled and drive. Just too lazy and entitled to fetch for themselves or to cook.

Or time poor but with the means to pay for a service that brings hot food to their door. I’m not sure there’s anything entitled about availing yourself of a service that’s freely offered and charged for. Entitled would be moaning that they had chosen not to offer the service because of a bit of bad weather ;)

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/01/2026 20:03

If it’s not safe then the company should close/do collection only . If they are open then it’s fair enough for people to order.

StephensLass1977 · 08/01/2026 20:04

One of my neighbours doesn't work but lives the life of riley. Lately she's been ordering huge boxes from Amazon, and ordering takeaways every night, and yes I do feel sorry for the drivers. Especially because she is perfectly capable of driving, but is just a very lazy woman. It's infuriating. Get it yourself! We are in the North East and have had almost a week of snow and ice. It's treacherous out there.

Certainly not time poor for my neighbours (both cases it is the sons as the mum's are not happy about it).

So if the takeaway doesn't want its drivers going out in the snow they can close. However both the takeaway owner and driver want to be earning money so unless it's extremely bad weather they will probably continue to deliver.

This.

The takeaway is open, the drivers are choosing to work?

Ceejadess · 08/01/2026 20:09

Most couriers are self employed and so choosing to be at work in the weather!

curious79 · 08/01/2026 20:11

Let the delivery drivers in the restaurants wear their big person pants and decide for themselves

Indeed. If they are not working they are not earning. Not sure how the OPs advice is going to enable them to pay the bills.

Sesma · 08/01/2026 20:12

Some people don't bother about the weather, however bad it is.

DoAWheelie · 08/01/2026 19:55

A lot of disabled people rely on delivery apps as their only source of hot food. Others may not be able to get out and shop and ran out of stuff.

Also the takeaways need the money - if everyone stops ordering when they are still open then they are losing money.

They can go hungry for a night rather than risk someone else's life in a red weather warning.

Genuinely. Even if they are disabled they should have a couple of days emergency food they can eat in case there's something like this.

Safety of everyone is important.

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/01/2026 20:13

My sisters away this week and is gutted as snow days are great for tips, more people ordering because so many more can't get out, don't want to go out, haven't got enough in etc, and more tips too.

She delivers for a local pizza place and a local chinese (they're next door) and gets paid per delivery plus tips. She'd certainly NOT thank you for refraining from ordering a takeaway because its snowy - if its too dangerous to deliver, they don't. Around here there are some roads that don't get gritted and are too steep in the snow. The residents of those roads know this and will arrange a delivery to the nearest place the driver can get to.

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:57

Yes but its a foul evening, surely you get that and people shouldn't be travelling unless they have too.

A takeaway is not an emergency.
Think of the driver.

I make a decision on whether or not I take a journey. The fast food restaurant can equally make a decision as to whether they want to make deliveries. They can easily suspend deliveries to f they want to.

Is it in the red weather warning, I thought that was wind, OP mentioned snow

She’s paying for a service. I don’t really see the issue.

It really is up to the takeaway place to pause orders if delivery conditions are dangerous.

Ahahi · 08/01/2026 20:16

Back when I was doing food deliveries I delivered in situations like this. They’re self employed, often not even hitting minimum wage. There needs to be a discussion about all this “gig economy” jobs that are just big corporations that own the various apps not wanting to pay properly.

Red weather warning for wind in Cornwall yes.

It's a no travel.

It doesn't really matter what type of weather it is. It's the warning that matters and is reflective of risk.

Bjorkdidit · 08/01/2026 20:17

The drivers are only 'self employed' because they're victims of an exploitative system where the apps takes a big cut of their hard work. It's not like they have much choice about it.

Too many people are happy to turn a blind eye as long as they get food brought to their door cheaply.

AgnesMcDoo · 08/01/2026 20:00

how is the driver meant to earn a living if everyone follows your advice

Your not advised to go out unless its necessary.
Somehow I am sure the drivers wont starve if they dont go out.

If you wont go and collect, why should they deliver?

OP posts:
SouthLondonMum22 · 08/01/2026 20:18

If delivery is available, delivery is available. Takeaways can have collection only or close and it is their choice if they still offer delivery.

Ponderingwindow · 08/01/2026 20:18

Im disabled and get various deliveries frequently.

i absolutely refuse to order anything in truly bad weather unless it is an actual medical necessity. This often frustrates my husband who gets unhappy just getting by with what we have on hand. I especially don’t order anything if it is icy and the person I hire to clear my walkway has not yet come by. He typically comes at the end of a storm unless it is an especially bad multi-day affair.

BurntBroccoli · 08/01/2026 20:18

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2026 19:54

If there’s a weather warning the takeaway places should put a stop on it. It’s a health and safety issue.

Although I loved in Canada for years and they deliver in 5 feet of snow and blizzards. They’d laugh at 1cm.

They probably won’t get paid though? No pay might mean no food or heating for them or their kids.

I don't think this is Cornwall, OP hasn't said where

Do you understand that if they don't deliver anything they don't get paid? Saying surely they won't starve really shows how privileged you are tbh. Lots of people would really struggle if they missed out on a few days pay. They are self employed and choosing to work, if they wanted to stay home warm then they absolutely could.

Sesma · 08/01/2026 20:20

Where is this for some context, it's pouring with rain where I am, how deep is the snow, is it Scotland
