To expect a takeaway to be delivered in the snow?

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:52

Never done it myself.

I see the takeaway driver going put though and I think is this a necessity to get someone out in bad weather to deliver you food?

Dont you have something in the house you coukd eat?
They say dont go out unless you have too. Our local.police are saying this tonight.

Is a takeaway really
necessary? Food for thought.

You wouldnt want to go out and collect, but your happy for someone else to drive to you in bad weather?

You don’t believe that someone on mumsnets husband is a delivery driver? Why not?

What did they do before food apps?

You surely are aware that people still had takeaways delivered before food apps existed, right? You would call the restaurant and place your order and they would send out their delivery driver. It's not a new phenomenon

The takeaway DH works for are brilliant and very sensible; they closed for deliveries in the snow last week and management support them to do so.

People do tend to tip better in bad weather, but some people become even more demanding and bigger arseholes than usual, finding whatever they can to complain about.

Wouldn't life be more peaceful.for them if they just made their own food.
Odd .

Lazy and entitled for ordering food? Entitled why? Do they get it for free od they pay from their own money for which they worked for? And lazy why? Maybe the time they would spend cooking they need it for someone else? Everybody is entitled to spend their mo ey as they wish. I dread to think there is curtain twitcher out there counting and judging my takeaways. Mind your own buisness and don't judge people from behknd the curtains!

Yeah and we really don’t know anyone’s situation. Some apparently young fit people may be struggling with mental health issues and/or chronic pain that means they’re not leaving their house much. Seems
to be on the rise nowadays especially with Gen Z.

I don’t drive, lived alone and struggled to leave the house during the pandemic and used to get a lot of takeaways for various reasons. None of those reasons for staying in or ordering out was laziness.

Unlike like many I wasn’t furloughed and was working about 55+ hours a week across two jobs. One my permanent full time work and the other a long term freelance contract . I’m not complaining but the fact is despite not leaving the house much I wasn’t sat on the couch watching tv 24/7 either.

If someone was watching all the deliveries turning up at my door during that period of time, they might have judged me as lazy too. Without knowing the reality. And they’d have been wrong.

It wasn’t healthy or affordable no, and I’ve knocked that habit on the head now so I mainly really only order out when I’m travelling and staying at hotels or airbnbs. But it wasn’t about me being lazy.

And no, I don’t think me or anyone paying for a service that businesses are offering us makes us “entitled”.

Have you ever thought about getting a life rather then bitching and moaning for the sake of it? What a sad small life you must have 😂

Funny how the poster suddenly popped up and said they dont post much and how upset they are?

Probably someone trying to cause a pile on.
Nearly worked didnt it. Someone goes off searching for posts and offering virtual flowers lol.

Like people arent entitled to post just in case people who deliver are upset.
Dont read if you dont like it.

Ha we have no takeaway deliveries where I live in Somerset, you have to drive down muddy tracks to pick your own up from the nearest town, no taxis either, minimal public transport but you could at least find a cow if you run out of milk.

TheFireHorse · 08/01/2026 22:54

If you are a genuine poster and not a goady troll you really really need to give your head a shake. What a privileged life you lead!!!!

I've had a job where I only got paid if I worked, no sick pay and I worked when I had pneumonia, literally coughing up blood and working. Don't worry (before the pile on starts) I didn't work with anyone else.

You know why OP? Because if I didn't work I couldn't feed my kids or pay my bills. It took me months to get over it and now have scarring on my lung. Whereas if I could have just taken a week off when it was a simple chest infection it wouldn't have gotten so bad.

This was over 20 years ago and I now have a great job with amazing pay and where I can take up to 6 months of full pay on sick leave.

But will never forget my life as a struggling single parent. And yes I would have driven in the snow, in fact I would have driven to hell and back if ensured I got paid!!

Don’t get food delivered if you don’t like it.

Gosh amazing how simple that was

Are you ok?

Honestly, you seem to be getting quite angry about some people using a service available to them that restaurant owners and drivers are happy to provide.

JustTakeMyHandAndBeWithMe · 08/01/2026 23:02

It’s on the business to think of the safety of their staff and the individuals themselves. If they’re open and offering delivery, customers can make use of it.

Just more virtue signalling. 🙄

momahoho1 · 08/01/2026 23:06

The owners of takeaways still want to make money, I’ve had admittedly luke warm pizza delivered in snow but I lived in a city. They were delivery by car and in bulk rather than 2-3 on a bike hence not as warm. Took a bit longer too but it’s a franchise and I knew the franchise owner, he needed the business

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 19:57

Yes but its a foul evening, surely you get that and people shouldn't be travelling unless they have too.

A takeaway is not an emergency.
Think of the driver.

But the driver may need the money and want to work. They don't get paid if they don't.

TheRuffleandthePearl · 09/01/2026 01:06

girlfriend44 · 08/01/2026 21:10

I dont believe that.

Did you read @IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece comment above?

Some people do live shift to shift for cash. Don’t work, don’t have any money for anything. You sound rather ignorant of the realities of life for people working in the gig economy.

Rosealea · 09/01/2026 01:08

Agree completely. It's wrong to put someone else's safety at risk because of laziness.

Shorten · 09/01/2026 01:18

I agree and disagree. I had a grocery order/full food shop delivered earlier in the week, I do usually get my groceries delivered but it just made extra sense when I saw the snow. Usually to me, the contingency would be going to the shops physically, and I didn’t feel it was best use of my time to brave the shops in snow/ice then carry that home.

So that one grocery delivery will likely last until the snow has cleared up, meaning there doesn’t need to be repeat food deliveries or grocery store visits and my household is sorted for food completely. There isn’t much difference between getting your food shop delivered vs getting a pizza delivered as it’s still someone physically making the trip to mine. But I’d say, it made sense under the circumstances for me to get a food delivery. If it was putting someone’s safety at risk, the store could have cancelled/refused the order.

What did they do before food apps?

Before food apps? Er well, they could have worked for a takeaway restaurant that used what’s called a ‘telephone’ on what people could ring to make their order. Or, and I know it might be difficult for you to comprehend, but perhaps they had a ‘different job’?

Can't they eat a cold meal for a day or two?

Edited

And how do housebound people get food shops in order to make the cold food? That's right, deliveries. So someone will be delivering regardless of if it's hot or cold.

I don't keep perishable items in the house as I'm so rarely actually physically capable of preparing anything for myself that everything always goes off before I can use it.

I can't even walk to the front door most days - I have a sofa below a window that opens wide and have the drivers pass me takeaways directly through the window. I had two full time carers looking after me but they both died so I'm just muddling through and doing the best I can alone now.
