Is this a trick question?
Of course I'm not ok with it. I barely use twitter, but find it useful for certain things occasionally. I never post or interact with other users.
I'm not quite sure why we are being scolded by someone who then uses blue.sky though given the dodgy stuff I've seen on it and how it's had issues with Child Abuse Images.
I'm also on FB still despite some pretty shitty stuff on there and how it's used by scammers and I've seen friends being sexually harassed etc. I know someone who used to work for them and whistleblew to the media and has some interesting stuff to say.
I have very limited use. I don't feel the need to justify that too much tbh. I'm slightly of the opinion that my boycotting isn't going to make any material difference due to my usage and patterns of usage. I also am mindful of how it's essentially online cities and criminality is something you can't wipe out because of the nature of criminals.
I do think that Grok needs to be dealt with on the subject of AI generated pictures. I also think the law needs tightening in the UK so there is more comeback and crucially better police enforcement of a huge issue with online abuse and harassment more generally which isn't taken seriously too. It relies on better international cooperation on the issue too.
Otherwise all you do is move the problem around the internet to places it's harder to identify where people are doing this. It still tends to be a relatively small number of individuals generating a huge number of these networks and images and they actually need to be dealt with by law enforcement rather than purely playing whackamole with accounts across all manner of websites not just the big ones.
I'm very much aware of the issues but my frustration is more with how stuff we were seeing first hand nearly 15 years ago still isn't really being taken seriously enough by governments because they have such poor understanding of tech and have failed to invest in dealing with adequate services to tackle a growing problem.
Yes the big tech companies absolutely should be all be doing more on various related issues to this. Their complaints and moderation are totally inadequate. (I ended up on MN for a reason). But I also don't think I should be self excluded from the online world because I don't think it is useful. The sheer number of fake and duplicate accounts is astonishing. After seeing someone had created over a thousand FB accounts to cheat at a shitty FB game, I came to the conclusion its pretty ridiculous to think it is going to make any difference.
It's unfortunately an appalling issue which is merely part of a much bigger problem that needs heads of state to work together to tackle anything else is really not much more than moving the furniture slightly.
