If you're still on X are you ok with what Grok's been doing?

Young girls, un-consenting women and now this

@eliothiggins.bsky.social‬
Just seen Grok putting the body of the victim of the ICE shooting in Minneapolis into a bikini. Digital corpse desecration now available to the public.

X remains the best place for football content and so I have stayed with it despite my many misgivings. But last night I was so fucked off at the MAGA crowd I deleted it. Take that Elon.

PacificState · 08/01/2026 21:44

@user4532789 yeah I only get it in search results. It’s definitely not my algo! Nothing I’ve ever proactively done on there suggests I want to see porn, but there they all are, insisting I look at it anyway. Still, it beats giving money to Elon.

On terrifying videos - I avoided the Kirk one but I’ve had to quickly scroll away from that awful Minneapolis video multiple times in the past couple of days. But that’s a wider social media problem. My son (early 20s) was saying today how upsetting he finds it and I think he’s on TikTok and Insta.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 08/01/2026 21:50

Blue sky is such an echo chamber though. It’s just cry baby democrats making the same mistakes again and again and again and again while reinforcing each others’ views of the world and being utterly ineffectual IRL.

but I think we have to accept that political debate just does not work online. I think it’s something to do with how you’re seeing an opinion out of context of the person whose opinion it is and it just makes everyone way too combative and unable to take a nuanced position.

admittedly this grok thing sounds horrific but maybe this is why we should alll just politely step away and invite our friends over to debate politics over wine and dinner.

Lovelyview · 08/01/2026 21:53

I'm on x because if you don't want to be censored for pointing out transwomen are men it's the only place you can say that. I was immediately told I wasn't allowed to say it on BlueSky. Yes, the AI images are shocking and hopefully that's being dealt with. I follow certain people on it and don't go on the 'for you' tab. It's fine. I've never seen a picture of dead Palastinians but I have seen an unwanted number of pictures of men in dresses in women's toilets and found out men who identify as women are being put in women's prisons in the UK - something I've never seen on the BBC.

PacificState · 08/01/2026 21:57

Bluesky definitely earns its reputation for a bunch of myopic, self-selecting ‘progressives’ slapping themselves on the back while espousing deeply mad shit. But I just don’t follow any of those people, and there’s less of a ‘class swot’ vibe than there was on old Twitter - I never see posts from those people because I’ve curated my feed pretty carefully. There are plenty of good, sensible follows on Bluesky. It’s nowhere near as much fun as Twitter was in the glory days, but nothing is.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2026 22:06

RedToothBrush · 08/01/2026 19:36

Bluesky and Threads don't do the function I want to use Twitter for.

I use Twitter for a reason. The other two are not substitutes.

I use Facebook for different things again.

If I could replace with a tool that worked and had the coverage I want, I would be more inclined to switch. But given I follow for a huge number of news agency feeds from around the world, and various other sources I can't get elsewhere it's effectively not an option.

Not having those would make me more ignorant and less informed. I follow accounts for people and organisations I don't like as much as ones I do like and this is key for me.

I don't want to be in an echo chamber.

There is a world of difference from not wanting a feed filled with amplified posts about things you fundamentally disagree with, and not wanting to be in an echo chamber.

Pre-Musk, my feed was balanced, definitely not an echo chamber. But post Musk it is very difficult to do that. I don’t know what unique set of things you need it for but it’s surprising you feel there is absolutely no other way you can get that. I’d have thought press reader would deliver you any news source you need. But in any case, you weren’t who I was talking about as clearly you don’t believe all SM is exactly the same.

You happily support a site that incorporates (and encourages) its AI platform to post artificially generated pornographic pictures of real women and children, because of your absolute need/right to espouse your views on the trans issue, even though you can pretty much do that anywhere with no issue? That’s a wild take.

Twitter has always been a sewer. It’s just that it used to be a left leaning sewer and now it’s a right leaning sewer and people have v little self- awareness. Nothing makes me want to cancel my TRIP sub more than AC banging on about how bad Twitter is now. No Alastair, it was always toxic. It’s just that it used to be your dogs attacking and now it’s theirs.

I’ve been on Twitter since 2009, but used it more regularly from about 2014. I’m not sure I ever would have described it as left leaning, but maybe that predated my use of it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/01/2026 22:13

SerendipityJane · 08/01/2026 17:31

Some people just read it for the articles.

🤣🤣🤣

Radiatorvalves · 08/01/2026 22:13

I don’t find Blue Sky to be sanctimonious, perhaps a little dull if anything. But I have never ever seen porn or anything inappropriate / revolting on it. I rather thought the filters or moderator function was working. Unlike X.

BoredZelda · 08/01/2026 22:14

tvon · 08/01/2026 19:29

If I left a platform because of gross, insulting, bad taste or demeaning stuff, I’d basically not be on anything. X is just like any other platform. If you see revolting stuff, you report it and move on to something else.

And if reporting it makes absolutely no difference, what then?

PacificState · 08/01/2026 22:15

I don’t think it’s true that gender critical people can say whatever they want (about what they believe) on Bluesky, to be fair. Technically they can, but I’ve seen some very robust people (Jesse Singal) get chased off through thousands of vexatious reports, death threats, rape threats, vicious abuse. There are some really, really weird people on Bluesky, and because of its slightly deranged political culture, there’s a critical mass of power users who enable some really nasty abuse of people they disagree with. Like I said, I’m done with X - but I’m fairly mild mannered and mostly use Bluesky to follow rather than to post. If I wanted to say whatever I thought my Bluesky experience would be hugely and perhaps prohibitively unpleasant.

user4532789 · 08/01/2026 22:18

@BoredZelda I think that's what's at the crux of my question, is how people who are still on X because they're gc reconcile it with the grok stuff.

@PacificState

Bluesky definitely earns its reputation for a bunch of myopic, self-selecting ‘progressives’ slapping themselves on the back while espousing deeply mad shit. But I just don’t follow any of those people,

Yes, agree, it's not that hard to curate that out on there. I do feel like it's a lot easier to control the user experience than on X, which used to be part of what was fun on there, but now feels more punishing and out of control than fun. It used to be like sticking your hand in a piñata and maybe getting an amazing sweet or one you didn't love, but by the end (for me) it was like the piñata had ten pieces of broken glass and barbed wire for every Haribo.

I know I'm almost never going to be surprised of blown away by the cleverness of something I read on Bluesky, but I will sometimes leave better informed on something. It's also less of a time waste, since I'm not tempted to keep refreshing.

X should be banned. Its a far right disinformation machine used by bad actors, from a country who are becoming increasingly adversarial, to undermine our democracy.

That it's also paedophilic in nature is on-brand for the US.

Ok as an experiment I just put ‘snow’ into the search bar and clicked on ‘posts’. Most are innocuous but within two scrolls I have two pieces of anime porn (god i hate anime porn creators, what a bunch of absolute losers and wrong ‘uns) and a woman with huge breasts in a latex playsuit. (I was going to add screenshots here but then remembered - hallelujah - MN is the one place on the internet that will ban you for this crap.) If there’s something I should be doing with my filters, pleeeeease tell me what!

I've never seen a concerning image on X.

Nothing images wise of dead people, war casualties, sexual images, inappropriate stuff, etc.

I can't think of one awful image I've seen on there!

I wonder why some people seem to be getting this unpleasantness and others aren't. Genuinely curious. I'm assuming it's something algorithm based but not sure.

The last time I was on there I was watching a video about cricket and it automatically started playing the next video it had lined up which was a group of men stamping on the head of an Asian man, posted by one of those accounts with 10 England flags after their name. I’m no wallflower but it was truly shocking and I haven’t been back on since. It’s a disgusting cesspool.

Sartre · 08/01/2026 18:19

I still have an account because for some reason my DC’s schools still post all pics on there but I haven’t dared scroll through the feed for about 18 months. Every time I did it was filled with horrific graphic images of dead Palestinians and I couldn’t bear it.

I think you need to talk to the school.

user4532789 · 08/01/2026 22:38

More cats than expected, but no anime or porn.

Going to try it by 'latest' now.

-a post about the snow in Minneapolis at the ICE killing scene
-It's snowing in Rugby
-A post about a goose in Denver who nests in someone's front porch plant when it snows
-snow in northern Florida a year ago today, first time the animals had ever seen it
-Maybe this is one? - no photo - Dressing up the OCs in cute outfits is always just the best!! even vampires deserve some time to play in the snow~
-My niece's snow art (Love written in the snow)
-A picture of a snow storm painting from the Tate
-A post about a vehicle appearing stuck in the snow and not weaponised (about the ICE killing)
-Second post by that same person with a follow up
-a post about John Snow's 1854 cholera map of Soho
-someone in Denmark wishing they had mountains and got snow

RedToothBrush Sorry, but what about it seems like a trick question?

You said "If you're still on X are you ok with what Grok's been doing"
Cos anyone is going to say 'oh yeah I'm fine with it'!

Instead the thread is set up as a judgement to slag off anyone daring to go against the blue sky noble warriors and dare to still be on Twitter as you are morally repugnant if you stay. Fuck off with that claptrap and judgment by association making.

It's not about trying to address the issue at hand which is tackling AI created porn across the board. Grok is in the wrong but fuck me it's not a problem restricted to Grok. There's a documentary on iPlayer about the subject that's be on there for a while about this. People aren't paying attention to this and have only woken up. Let's face it because it's Elon's tool suddenly 'ooo we've got some ammunition to throw around' every bit as much because there's a wider issue with AI porn. That's not cool. Whose been paying attention properly and who is just getting the Elon boot in?

Honestly all of the major social media platforms have some pretty bloody awful flaws and it's not about saying ooo well that's massively worse and it being about picking your poison to virtue signal your political beliefs rather than identify and fix issues. And there's a number of AI tools that are widely available that pose the same problem. Ironically it being Grok, has suddenly focused minds (which is a good btw as it is likely to led to issues elsewhere as well as on Grok being dealt with quicker than they otherwise would) - not primarily because individuals were concerned about the actual problem at hand but because they hate Musk. This is what frustrates me - this idea that if you are on twitter you are automatically a weirdo Musk devotee or sympathiser in some simplistic drivel of a narrative rather than having much more complex view of things.

Personally I want to see a range of professional journalistic sources and to hear voices I don't remotely agre wee with on principle because this means I'm better informed about what people are saying and where they are coming from. It helps me form better arguments and counter arguments on my own terms. You have to be able to deal with views and opinions you don't like by means other than just saying 'you are the enemy'. It's very much a case of understanding not only your own side and that makes for better political debate across the board which is fundamental to democratic integrity and actually tackling some of the bullshit including sexual harassment on all social media platforms and in all forms.

This whole idea of 'better', loses sight of understanding what is driving things and tackling issues at core rather than just shouting 'ban it' at every opportunity. This is a fundamental lack of understanding of the internet and how humans function. I don't believe that bans and boycotts ultimately work because it's just more shouting into the void which produces toxic camps and unfortunately the accompanying tribal backlashes too.

We actually have to talk to people and work together about the actual issue rather than screaming at someone they are a bad person because they haven't deleted twitter yet.

The whole premise of this thread is not "what do we do to tackle AI porn?", it's actually "How dare you support Musk and yet there's some stuff about AI porn too which we don't like". It dilutes the point and actually ends up detracting from the actual problem because everyone ends up talking about how awful Musk is rather than talking about AI porn. There are Musk supporting allies who really don't like it either and people should be trying to reach out to them because in terms of Twitter, Musk is much more interest in these people and keeping them happy because they are his audience. There's common ground here with people 'on the other side' who are much more likely to effect change than a bunch of people who don't like him flouncing off on their moral high horses.

I'm just not fucking interested in this tribal bullshit wherever it's coming from. It's not fucking helpful.

Grok was programmed to pornify images.
