I worry mainly about slipping over, snow is generally easier to walk in

TheSmallAssassin · 08/01/2026 14:46

There's a red wind warning for Cornwall now, so if I was under that I would make sure everything was secure, that I had enough milk in and what I needed to work from home so I didn't have to leave the house. I would also make sure I was prepared for a power cut (power bank charged, for example). It's sensible, not panicky, to be weather ready.

Zippedydodah · 08/01/2026 14:46

We’re high up and well used to getting battered by foul weather so, as usual, I have plenty of food, logs, batteries and anything else that might be needed/useful.
The wild bird feeders are full, the house is warm and we’ll see what transpires.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 08/01/2026 14:47

I'm right in the middle of where it's supposed to be bad. I have plenty of food in already (no specific buying).

I've brought lots of logs into the house so that hopefully minimises having to go out and get them, and I've charged up my power bank and big torch in case the power goes off for a bit.

backr · 08/01/2026 14:47

I've been snowed in for a week, had to give my neighbour some cat food as they ran out, so remember to check pet food supplies!

LateMumma · 08/01/2026 14:47

Red weather alert here, so we’ve charged the power banks and torches. I’ve made sure my mum is prepared, other than that we’ll stay home and wait it out with wine!

Live my life and not scaremonger on the internet probably.

Oh unclench. Shopping a day early is not scaremongering 😂

I'm the same, OP - am doing my weekly shop in a sec rather than tomorrow. Keeping an eye on socials for any peep of the school being shut, so I'm not panicking tomorrow morning. Covering plants in fleece.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 08/01/2026 14:48

I filled the car up, as previously petrol stations were closed

TheSmallAssassin · 08/01/2026 14:50

@momahoho1 only storms that are likely to have an amber or red warning raised for them get named, so only the ones that are expected to have medium or high impact.

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/01/2026 14:52

Got a red weather warning here from 4pm onwards, so I’ve cooked a curry to see if my gusts are stronger 💨😁

tinytemper66 · 08/01/2026 14:53

Yes. I flew to Alicante this morning ☺️🤣

Didn't know there was a storm!

Same didn't have a clue

Peridot1 · 08/01/2026 14:54

Don’t think we are projected to be hit badly - Hampshire/Surrey borders. DS works from home on Fridays anyway. Supermarket delivery came today as normal. I’ll put the recycling bin under cover in case we do get some wind.

I have a dentist appointment tomorrow so will need to go out but if it’s very bad I’ll cancel.

I am very glad our neighbours dealt with their huge half dead conifers a few months ago though!

Boomer55 · 08/01/2026 14:55

Doing nothing. It’s a bit rainy and cold here, but no need for a drama.

Definitelynotme2022 · 08/01/2026 14:55

I'm in north Hampshire, so it should be ok. The only thing I've done is make sure I've got lots of kindling and logs in from the garage, it's horrible to do in the cold, dark and wet regardless.

Tdcp · 08/01/2026 14:57

We're in the path of 30cm snow forecasted so I've got some extra food in just in case as I don't want to take my little fiesta out in the ice. I feel for those in Cornwall and in the path of the 100mph winds.

Do people watch news and weather either on TV, radio or online.

Didn't know there was a storm!

Really? BBC is scaremongering again with a ‘Danger to life!!!’ headline. Reality: only really affecting a small part of the country.

Does anyone remember when we weren’t conditioned to be permanently scared out of our wits?

givemushypeasachance · 08/01/2026 14:58

There is a red weather warning for some areas which is danger to life, and yellow and amber warnings across a fair chunk of the rest of the country - I don't know why some people feel the need to be so dismissive when it's perfectly reasonable that if you live in those areas you may be needing to prepare!

BlackStrayCat · 08/01/2026 14:59

tinytemper66 · 08/01/2026 14:53

Yes. I flew to Alicante this morning ☺️🤣

It is freezing, snowing and storm hits here and France in 1/2 days.
Nothing as cold as Spain in winter.

ChequerToRed · 08/01/2026 14:59

Just got back from Pets at Home as my very elderly Jack Russell (he’ll be 17 in the Spring) needed some more jumpers, but that’s all. He's now rocking a nice chunky grey number.

Also just bog standard common sense and doesn’t require a thread on MN 😂

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 14:39

It's due to be wet and blustery on the south coast, nothing more. I've seen a lot worse forecasts!

In cornwall, a red warning and 80 to 100mph winds... but atm is not even blustery...

Nickyknackered · 08/01/2026 15:00

Netcurtainnelly · 08/01/2026 14:27

Been all the news and weather..

Well clearly not everywhere! Just rain here.

There is danger to life for a lot of people, winds of 70-100mph are dangerous that isn't scaremongering. We're expected to hit 30cm of snow, people are at work and need to know so they can get home safely. If you're in an unaffected area then great for you but others are not.
