In cornwall, a red warning and 80 to 100mph winds... but atm is not even blustery...

I'm not in Cornwall! I appreciate it's going to be bad in some places.

NessShaness · 08/01/2026 15:02

We’re forecast snow from 6pm, blizzards from 9pm-3am, and then more snow from 3am-2pm on Friday. I can’t see any further on than that right now. I hope this forecast is wrong snow is such a pain in the arse!

Just got back from Pets at Home as my very elderly Jack Russell (he’ll be 17 in the Spring) needed some more jumpers, but that’s all. He's now rocking a nice chunky grey number.

Aah so glad you have got your JRT comfy. Mine is curled up on MY heated fleece and definitely not budging 😂

Really? BBC is scaremongering again with a ‘Danger to life!!!’ headline. Reality: only really affecting a small part of the country.

Does anyone remember when we weren’t conditioned to be permanently scared out of our wits?

Are your frightened out of your wits then? I’m not. There have always been storms that present a danger to life in some parts of their path. Being told about them lets me know whether I’m in that part or not. It doesn’t make me scared at all. In fact mostly quite the opposite.
When did people start assigning nonsense motives to the news and weather?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/01/2026 15:03

Dh went to M and S football to get ‘treats to get us through’😁

The entire city seemed to have had the same idea apparently.

Nickyknackered · 08/01/2026 15:00

Well clearly not everywhere! Just rain here.

You wouldn’t know anything out of the usual where we are (obviously could change). Tomorrow and Sat looking like great washing days ☀️💨

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:05

Jade3450 · 08/01/2026 15:00

Also just bog standard common sense and doesn’t require a thread on MN 😂

Edited

There are threads about whether people wash their feet in the shower. Someone idly wondering about something on MN doesn’t imply panic or that it’s a ‘required’ discussion. Why are you so determined to believe everyone but you is in a panic?

Livingthebestlife · 08/01/2026 15:05

I'm in Ireland and even I know about your storm and bad weather, it's all over our news and obviously internet. Op if getting your shopping in a day early makes you feel more at ease then good for you, it would be worse if the storm is bad and you can't get to the shops. Every area is affected differently by weather, I do laugh when people of Ireland say god no we've no bad weather and they live on opposite sides of the country. Sometimes towns next to each other can be affected completely different. Stay safe

Billybingbong · 08/01/2026 15:06

We've had snow all week. We've been working from home as we can't get the car safely off the driveway, and school has only just reopened today. Im sick of the damn stuff now, so am quite glad its moving on to other parts of the country. It's someone else's turn to deal with it now, if you could please take the lingering ice with you too, that would be most helpful ☃️

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/01/2026 15:06

TheSmallAssassin · 08/01/2026 14:46

There's a red wind warning for Cornwall now, so if I was under that I would make sure everything was secure, that I had enough milk in and what I needed to work from home so I didn't have to leave the house. I would also make sure I was prepared for a power cut (power bank charged, for example). It's sensible, not panicky, to be weather ready.

I’m under it, we’ll be good.

Garden furniture might end up in Donald Trumps front garden though.

Laserwho · 08/01/2026 15:06

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 14:39

It's due to be wet and blustery on the south coast, nothing more. I've seen a lot worse forecasts!

We don't all live on the South coast.

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:06

Nickyknackered · 08/01/2026 15:00

Well clearly not everywhere! Just rain here.

The national news and weather covers other areas though. It’s just surprising there are people who never catch a news or weather bulletin. It’s does cover most of the country (though I appear to be in a micro climate bit with storm all round but nothing here).

grizzlyoldbear · 08/01/2026 15:07

My face to face training has just been cancelled in Penarth. So hooray for that!
I was suprised, they're used to rain in Wales.

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:08

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/01/2026 15:01

I'm not in Cornwall! I appreciate it's going to be bad in some places.

But you can appreciate that some people on MN might be? And that it’s on the south coast so your dismissive ‘I’ve seen worse’ is a bit out of place?

MiddleAgedDread · 08/01/2026 15:09

so far we've managed to miss the snow to the north of us and looks like we should miss the snow to the south of us too! Forecast is for sleet overnight and throughout tomorrow but no high winds. It's sheet ice outside today and probably the worse conditions we've had since this cold snap started as it was colder but drier earlier in the week.

noidea69 · 08/01/2026 15:09

Probably just stop in the house if its pissing down & windy.

If i need to go somewhere i'll go in the car.

marcopront · 08/01/2026 15:09

Keeping my fingers crossed.
I’m currently at Birmingham airport with just a t shirt and fleece, waiting for a coach to Heathrow. Then flight tomorrow which hopefully won’t be delayed.

Exactly. There are threads about what colour shoes to wear with a dress, there was one the other day where a poster was panicking because she was going away for the weekend and missing her usual hair wash day… I don’t think posting about a massive storm that is going to affect quite a lot of the country is particularly ‘out there’!

TheNoonBell · 08/01/2026 15:10

Did a big shop yesterday but the shelves were pretty empty, very little fresh veg after a week of black ice. DH hauled a load of logs in from the woodshed and now has the woodburner going, he's also charged all the torches, lanterns and battery packs. I've made a nice chicken stew and baked a loaf so we can munch away over the evening in front of the fire. Haven't really dented the stupid amount of wine I got in for Christmas so will get a bottle or two out for tonight as we will both be working from home tomorrow.

Really looking forward to a nice romantic evening.

Netcurtainnelly · 08/01/2026 14:57

Do people watch news and weather either on TV, radio or online.

Not really. The news is depressing and they are always wrong about the weather so no point

ohtowinthelottery · 08/01/2026 15:11

Tbh I'm sick of all these weather warnings. It's just winter FGS. Have we forgotten how to deal with the seasons in this country? The media are just whipping everyone up into a frenzy. I've lived on this planet for over 60 years. Been driving since I was 17. Prior to Social media we just dealt with whatever was thrown at us. If we were at work and it started snowing, then the boss would make the decision to let people go early, usually based on how far they had to travel. School buses just used to get recalled early if necessary. Now we cancel everything in anticipation of how bad it might be.
Nobody seems to be able to manage themselves anymore. People whinging on SM because every single bit of tarmac (roads and pavements) haven't been gritted by the Council. It's got nothing to do with Council cutbacks or wasting our Council tax. Minor roads and pavements have never been gritted in my lifetime. You put on sturdy walking boots, carried a shovel and a mat in your car in case you got stuck and cracked on with life.

grizzlyoldbear · 08/01/2026 15:07

I was suprised, they're used to rain in Wales.

And Penarth is just outside the warning area. It’s likely to be windy though. I live there. An excess of caution maybe. We were in the warning area for a while.

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/01/2026 15:13

I assume @Netcurtainnelly lives up some steep twisty rural track in the arse end of nowhere, prone to deep snow drifts and off the usual gritting route.

I live 5 minutes from a Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons and M&S, and 10 minutes from a Waitrose (though the road up to their carpark IS steep). Even if someone has to walk there if we can't get to the main road, we'll be fine.

No idea why 'snow' has to be all in caps. Does snow usually cause you to shout OP?

IdleThoughts · 08/01/2026 15:15

Where are you that you are anticipating being neck deep in snow??

I have GMB on whilst I get ready for work but I dont have time to sit and watch it. Then phone app and Alexa give me updates when their are alerts.
