Yep.
I used to have nightmares (not an exaggeration actual nightmares) about a nuclear bomb going off as a teenager in the 80s, we were constantly inundated with media showing us how we'd all be dead and gone by about the year 2000 or earlier. Blade Runner was set in 2019 because apparently that seemed pretty reasonable in 1982 😅 Children of Men is set in 2027.
There have always been doomcryers, it makes great cinema and our brains are set up to see the tiger's tail twitching on the Savannah. We barely notice the 20 butterflies that flutter past each day. We have evolved to focus on the negative, because for survival purposes it doesn't matter if you forget that your life is, actually, moment by moment pretty great - but it will matter if you miss that one life threatening outlier.
And it suits governments to keep their citizens just scared enough to tolerate any bollocks they hand down. Coupled with that, the internet has turned doom mongering into its own mental illness, an inescapable (if you are online at all) avalanche of filth and fear bathing people's brains every waking moment.
I occasionally post here, occasionally check the news, and try to stay away from echo chambers and misery mongers as a rule.
Even if we are all doomed (and we're not) bathing in the sewage of social media, hunting out all bad things and ruminating on them, and wallowing in self imposed terror won't change a thing.
