America has gone insane. Executing people on the streets for suspecting them of being immigrants. The rapist-in-chief marauding around the world doing what he wants. Israel mass murder children (& adulrs) in Gaza and call anyone who protests an antisemite.Other world leaders stand by and do nothing.
The climate iw shafted. Probably heading for 1.7° or worse, probable mass migration and associated wars. Hundreds of thousands dead in Ukraine. British economy f**ked. Musk heading to Trillionairedom while billions have next to nothing. Everyone glued to their phones, social life dead, mass anxiety and depression among young people.
Im honestly sick of the world now.

Zoom out for the birdseye view.
80 years ago we were marching people into death camps because of their ethnicity and dropping weapons of mass destruction on children.
A few decades before that we were shipping people in chains across oceans to work as slaves and throwing them overboard if water was scarce and then claiming their value back on insurance. Clearing people out of their homelands and taking their children away as government policy. Back a bit and we hang children for stealing bread. Wars, endless wars since the dawn of time. Plagues, floods, volcanoes destroying entire civilisations. A mini ice age. I could go on for years.
Human life, the life of any animal really is not meant to be peaceful stable cooperative and full of happiness. It’s always been about surviving and the pursuit of food, resources and sex.
The idea that now is “worse” than Victorian times or the Dark Ages or when the Romans invaded is pure narcissism. It’s only the worst
time of all because you’re living in it so you perceive it that way.
Humans have always laughed and fallen in love and made art and enjoyed sex and sang together and invented things and decorated our homes and we will continue to do so. The idea that Trump or Netanyahu is “worse” than Hitler or Pol Pot or Genghis Khan is ludicrous.

If it helps, every generation from Plato onwards has written that things used to be better and that the particular moment they are living in is the worse of all times and the end of the world. Every generation thinks it. It’s not been true yet. We will be fine.

When our climate is being destroyed?

You’re right. The way I see things atm, the world is coming to an end, and I’ve never had that feeling before. I’m mid 50s and feel my generation are the last ones to have experienced a decent care free life/childhood, and I feel sad for the young children of today, because the future looks very bleak…

Hard agree 👍 It's so depressing

IncessantNameChanger · 08/01/2026 00:26

Things are looking bleak that's for sure. But I remember being terrified of Russia nuking us as a junior school child.

Things are shifting in a way there's no fast path back from. For the first time in many years our closest Ally is not our ally at all. The big brother we depended on has turn his back. So we need to stand with and say democracy actually has a price ( ie sucking up to the US) side with the EU? Go to war with Nato? See Nato end? Who knows.

But I can not control it. I'm very aware. But I'm not going to let fear rob me of my life.

Dollyfloss · 08/01/2026 00:27

No, you’re being ridiculous - there’s always been shit going on in the world. And from what I’ve seen on another thread (I haven’t seen the video and don’t want to) it’s not clear that the woman shot didn’t bring it on herself. And she wasn’t shot bc she was “suspected of being an immigrant”. She apparently drove away from armed officers after being told to get out of her vehicle. Some are saying she veered towards one of them.

It’s extremely sad and awful and her children have been left without a mum, but if that’s true she made some bad choices there I’m afraid.

Also Gaza - why is this the only war ever mentioned? There are other wars going on in the world you know? There are always wars going on. For centuries.

The information you've shared about the ICE shooting is totally incorrect. Gaza is currently the biggest cause of death for children / child amputees so matters ...which other wars are you hoping to end?

Came here to say some version of this, but you said it much much better than I would have!

The constant bombardment with information and pictures and commentary on the information and opinion about the commentary on the information can easily create a spiral of panic and despondency if you don’t consciously step back sometimes and take in a wider historical and geographic perspective.

We are not the “last generation” to have an easy carefree (relatively) wealthy childhood. If anything my generation was the first to have that. And that only applies to the privileged “Western” world, there are plenty of places in the world where that has never been the case.

Of course the Gaza war mattered. But there are other wars currently going on. That are never mentioned. I can do a list if you like but it’s easily google-able.

I don’t want to watch the video of the woman being shot but it seems to be a matter of opinion of what actually happened and I’m sure there will be a full review. People are shot in America every day. It’s horrendous of course. Women are murdered by their husbands in the UK every day.

The point I’m making is that there is ALWAYS shit going on in the world. It just doesn’t all make front page breaking news.

Put things in perspective.

I agree a lot of them seem like absolute thugs but they are officials. They’re US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Occupations like this and the police force will always attract a certain amount of angry men unfortunately.

You're damn right. There was a brilliant lecture recently on the BBC about this exact thing.

What we should remember is that small groups of committed citizens have affected massive, global change for the better. When the anti-slavery movement began in Britain it was a tiny, unfunded, niche and up against the richest and most powerful people (and nations) going - and yet, they did it, and now it seems that it was inevitable. It wasn't. It was wildly unlikely to succeed and the political and market forces of the time were moving in if anything the opposite direction. Same with the temperance movement.

Yes, I agree.

I'm about the same age as you and my childhood included underlying threats of all- out nuclear war (watching Threads scarred me for life), nuclear power accidents and leaks including the horror of Chernobyl and constant bombings in the news due to The Troubles in Northern Ireland and the everpresent threat of attacks on the UK mainland.

Given that all murders are horrendous, State sanctioned murder, where agents of the State are the murderers of that State’s own citizens, and where the POTUS has already delivered his verdict that the agent is innocent of any crime, is particularly concerning in a democracy where the rule of law is supposedly enshrined in the Constitution, don’t you think?

I watched it. It is not a matter of opinion, its a matter of reality.

I understand you don't want to see it, but beware the "opinions" of those excusing this. Im watching GB News right now. Their editing is shocking.

Gaza’s government heralded as victims of Israeli attack crushes my soul. Propaganda fuelled ignorance.

Mottledpaper68821 · 08/01/2026 01:29

I maybe have a different outlook op because humans have always struggled through wars and pestilence. Read any history book!

My late parents lived through the Second World War. One of them lived in occupied territory and endured a very, very bleak time. Times were hard afterwards too as rationing in the UK continued until 1953.

What saddens me is that much of what is happening now was entirely predictable and indeed was predicted.

By voting for Brexit, we removed ourselves from the protective circle of nations that emerged from the ashes of WW2. And the UK, having rejected our nearest neighbours and the largely centrist Christian liberal democratic values of the EU, instantly became more vulnerable to the machinations of the USA and was bound inevitably to move further to the right. If we voted against the centre left; where on earth did everyone think we would go?

What an unnecessarily rude comment. Especially on a thread like this.

I understood them perfectly. They were clearly responding to the references to tech bros and megalomaniac's in @DorisTheFinkasaurus comment.

Zoom out even more and we see that modern humans exist for a tiny slice of earth's timeline. Ironically the intelligence that helped us thrive as a species may be a contributory factor in our extinction. Or maybe it will be a super volcano that takes us down.
