America has gone insane. Executing people on the streets for suspecting them of being immigrants. The rapist-in-chief marauding around the world doing what he wants. Israel mass murder children (& adulrs) in Gaza and call anyone who protests an antisemite.Other world leaders stand by and do nothing.
The climate iw shafted. Probably heading for 1.7° or worse, probable mass migration and associated wars. Hundreds of thousands dead in Ukraine. British economy f**ked. Musk heading to Trillionairedom while billions have next to nothing. Everyone glued to their phones, social life dead, mass anxiety and depression among young people.
Im honestly sick of the world now.

Maybe focus on the fact we’ll be lucky to have a world based on how much of a state it is in environmentally and likely to get very much worse , maybe focus on the fact weapons and who has them are a world a way to the Second World War, maybe focus on the fact your kids will be increasing unlikely to own their own home, have access to healthcare or pensions or not by impacted by growing level of dictatorship spreading across the world…..than they will have laughs and travel. 🙄

My Great Grandfather refused to fight in WW2. He’d already fought in WW1, a war he was promised was the war to end all wars.
All that suffering just to let history repeat itself over and over again. We never learn.

I absolutely agree with this, I fear for the future of my kids and their kids.
I don’t know if it’s a getting older thing or not, but I’ve a thought a few times that I’m glad I won’t be here to see it.

I feel so sad for every person who ‘gave their life for their country’. What a waste of life.

That's literally nothing even close to the actual situation that happened with ICE earlier. You'd have to despair of people getting their "news" from god knows where to actually believe this outright misinformation and spread it as "facts"

Yeah the headlines are not great but it was ever thus. I try to concentrate on the small actions of kindness every day and the wonderful acts of of bravery among the horror: the people who tried to stop the train stabber and the attacker in Bondi- absolute heroes.

There’s never been a safe time in history. There’s always been wars, people dying young etc. Step away from the news for a bit.

What is still happening in Gaza is significant because it’s a further example of the breakdown of World War 2 order, this erosion of international law that we have seen also in Ukraine and now with Venezuela. Also this undermining of organisations that keep the peace and even those that give aid or speak of peace.

Between that and this rise in authoritarianism that we are seeing in the West. I think that’s what people are concerned about.

The difference today compared to previous conflicts through history is the global reach of weapons and media. This means those with the biggest guns can control the most terrotories and people and control the narrative. We all depend on one singular media for information - meaning the internet - and our lives are hooked on electricity and a short turnaround food supply chain. It’s easy to forget this when everything’s working and we have access to a range of news sources and we’re warm and well fed.
How would we feel if the internet, electricity and mobile phone signals were switched off? And supermarket systems collapsed?
What options would we have then?
I entirely agree that most societies are more open, tolerant, equitable than ever before, but we’re also entirely dependent on a few key networks that could be easily controlled by those in power should they decide to. See Russia, North Korea, Afghanistan.
I think we should be rejecting extreme global dependence wherever we can eg. AI being centralised in China/US, Amazon gives extreme wealth and power to that dickhead Bezos, Tesla etc - we should keep spending locally and keep our money and power more diffuse to stop creating megalomaniacs who can then do whatever they want to us.
It also means a few twatty power addicts get to decide what happens to the climate which is just so wrong given they don’t give a toss.

But weapons haven’t been like they are now or in so many hands. The world itself also wasn’t burning with anti environment zealots holding all the power and thwarting any efforts to save it.

One reason for hope is that women and minority groups have never had the voice and influence that we have now.
Men in power were revered and feared more, but we all have the understanding of what these men can do and we (currently) do have the means to share news and influence in seconds. It’s hopefully going to work for Iran’s benefit but that’s not a given and they are in the minority as we are still under the control of govt - how many ordinary Russians approve of the war yet Putin has control of the narrative and the police and army, murdering his opposition, faking election results and quashing any chance of being unseated.
It’s scary - I just hope Trump wants the peace prize more than he wants more territory and more power.

I think what the person you responded to was pointing out is that 1/6 of the worlds population have little hope of becoming old due to deprivation. Part of the reason your old lady in your story is lying waiting on an ambulance is our aging population. Because a lot of our population live to old age. Which is a privilege in itself.

My gut instinct is that Trump is appalling and what’s happening is appalling.

However…

I wonder whether the rules we have been running under are counter productive. After the Second World War, the UN was formed, all the other ethical structures were put in place to make the world safer. Great, progress. But… the terrorists are not signed up to all that. The dictators of the world aren’t signed up. Great swathes of countries have unelected leaders, and wage war on their own citizens and the rest of the world in a variety of ways.

The civilised rules we have been following hamstrung us in our defence and response. Maybe we need to be able to bite back. Maybe we need to show our teeth, rather than relying on other nations leadership to ‘Be kind’.

Please don’t misunderstand me, I was shocked and horrified. However I have started to wonder if there’s another perspective.

Exactly what is this supposed mass murder in Gaza when Israel was the country attacked and the aggressor's death toll is low, especially compared to other wars going on right now? Musk isn't having a bath in £££ he's stolen from poor people, his money is barely more than pixels on a screen showing share values.
