America has gone insane. Executing people on the streets for suspecting them of being immigrants. The rapist-in-chief marauding around the world doing what he wants. Israel mass murder children (& adulrs) in Gaza and call anyone who protests an antisemite.Other world leaders stand by and do nothing.
The climate iw shafted. Probably heading for 1.7° or worse, probable mass migration and associated wars. Hundreds of thousands dead in Ukraine. British economy f**ked. Musk heading to Trillionairedom while billions have next to nothing. Everyone glued to their phones, social life dead, mass anxiety and depression among young people.
Im honestly sick of the world now.

I'm a historian too, and i used to think like this, but recently i feel far more doom because trump's regime really IS starting to look like the rise of the nazis, and i grew up in a post ww2 era where we were supposed to have moved on and that would never return in developed nations. This makes me feel like we are simply doomed to repeat, repeat, repeat history and the last 80yrs have been a lie we told ourselves

The rules weren’t perfect but they helped us work together, and by us I mean the traditional allies. That’s what made us strong. Now the US has gone completely rogue and we are likely to see other countries going the same way with the rise in authoritarian leaderships.

The falling apart of these systems will leave us very vulnerable. Will something better come later at some point? Maybe but we definitely have taken a dark turn and the next few decades won’t be fun.

YANBU that things are scary right now. World leaders don't know what to do about Trump because America has all the military power, it's a huge flaw in the system that has (mostly) kept things peaceful in the west since WW2.

My take is that we need to fight fascism on our own turf, there's nothing that can be done by normal people in America but here we need to fight against Reform and Tommy Robinson. I've joined Amnesty and Hope not Hate. We need to make connections in our own communities and bring our kids up to know right from wrong. Scary times yes, but we will persist.

Oh I know what people's 'concerns' are. The OP singled out one place in a short post. Just one conflict in a world with many awful ongoing conflicts, a world where many countries have high child mortality, high murder rates and flouting of legal norms. We see it!

Surprisingly, people who say things like this often think they're a good person.

About 20 years ago the world looked very dark. I asked my dad about it, fully expecting him to say, with his many more decades experience that things had been worse. To my surprise he agreed things were indeed dark.

But we got through the 80s with aids and nuclear war hanging over us. We survived Chernobyl and Fukushima. Covid.

I think after WW2 we needed to run the world by committee, but it hasn’t been working so well recently.

The irony of the Country that helped us fight facism turning to it themselves now…

People used to be beheaded because they didn’t agree with the monarchy in the UK. There’s always been wars. There’s never been a safe time in history.

I'm 70 and feel the same.

At least I can console myself with the fact that I'll probably have shuffled off before I have to live through many more years of it, and I'm childfree by choice, so don't have to worry about the impact on my children.

I really think my generation had the best of things: affordable housing (both to buy and to rent), grants if you went to uni and opportunities to work and train in a profession at the same time if you didn't, functioning public services etc.

Looking back, it seems like a golden age, and I feel really sorry for today's young people.

Hard times in the past are irrelevant because of climate destruction. I find it very hard to see a meaningful future.

But you needed your husband's permission to her a mortgage, a British woman could not pass on her citizenship to foreign born children, rape in marriage was legal, racism was dreadful, attitudes to mental health issues were pretty barbaric, there was the Cold War and numerous other wars, the 80s were dreadful if you were unemployed. There are some serious rose tinted views on here!

But those people were at least on a forward progression with hope for a better future for their children and grandchildren. I think the despondency arises now from the feeling we are moving backwards.

I’m not saying the world was perfect back then. It wasn’t. But I never felt the impending danger I feel now. There’s so much more going on. Yes we had the IRA, and the nuclear weaponory was there, but the IRA was not a global threat, and nuclear weapons were there but there wasn’t nearly the amount of threats worldwide we currently have. Feels we are teetering on a precipice.

All these things were awful, but the threats we have now can potentially wipe the world out. We have deranged countries like Russia, China and North Korea who possess nuclear weapons and who would use them in a heartbeat.

I've created my own happiness bubble. I only follow a few of friends on social media, and have trained the algorihm so I only see posts of cats and knitting. Even Mumsnet is at the limits with all the nasty posters on here.

I ignore current affairs that don't really effect me.

I've minimised my work hours to get the most money coming in with least time away from the family. I'm currently just celebrating being able to another third baby!

Ultimately we are all here for a tiny amount of time before we return to being dirt so might as well spend the time happy.

All this, and people call social situations to "peopley' and making secular living at home never seeing anyone normal, I've been called weird (and worse) on here for saying I enjoy long social interactions

Oh please, there is shit going on but there’s also a lot of joy if you decide to look for it. I suggest the Op steps away from the internet and focuses on the positive. It cannot be mentally healthy to go to the extent of posting something like this. Back in the real world the rest of us are getting on with our lives, enjoying our families, loving our children etc etc.

I listened to the Mayor of Minneapolis speak and felt some warmth returning. There is still sanity around, you just have to look for it OP. In yourself and others.

I think the world has always been like this but now we have TikTok and Facebook and the 24 hour news cycle on devices in our pockets, to constantly tell us. I don’t think the world is any worse than it was during WW2 or when the Romans invaded or at any other point in time. I think what we’re feeling is ‘information bombardment’.

I felt like this during Covid lockdowns where there was a constant cycle of death media. Once I restricted my intake, life was easier. And no, that’s not sticking my head in the sand, that’s understanding that in most cases I can do nothing about most of these situations so why put my brain into meltdown into obsessing over things I cannot change.

There’s also mass murder of women and children and genocide in Africa. Only difference is nobody talks about it.
