Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

Tbf fake officers were a thing before the Internet.

I think this is not a new thing we are just more aware of it due to the internet. I read a good book by Zadie Smith ( the Fraud) which was based on a true story about this guy who pretended to be a dead Lord to inherit his estate in Victorian times there was a big legal case about it.

People also claimed to be the princes in the tower and Princess Anastasia. We know that girl wasn’t Madeline MacCan because she had a DNA test. In the past people wouldn’t have had a DNA test.

As to why people do it. I have no idea. The psychology behind it is fascinating.

I loved The Fraud.

Anastasia had so many impersonators but tbf at least some were mentally unwell.

The friend mentioned earlier in the thread was saying today (she's childless and semi-retired btw) that the reason for the rise in ADHD, dyslexia etc is because parents get more child benefit if their child has a diagnosis of this type...

If you think of how most people drive (like lunatics), spend money (they don't have on shit they don't need), vote (!?!?), put up flags on lamp posts, get into relationships with the most dreadful people, eat, smoke, drink and vape things that will almost certainly damage if not kill them, regularly take their dogs through fields full of cattle, have a picnic inches from the cliff at Beachey Head and get in the sea when the RNLI have told them not to........well most people are ruddy bananas aren't they?

Also people who climb mountains in flip flops because it’s all sunny and warm at the bottom and then it changes when they get near the summit. The same ones that walk close to the sea shore in stormy weather and then get swept out to sea etc etc

LadeOde · 06/01/2026 19:48

I'm completely stumped at why the people who have claimed to know Madeline McCaan's whereabouts have done so? or the utterly crazed woman claiming to be her has said so, knowing fully well, she knows ziltch about the girl. What's more disturbing is these people hold down normal jobs and live and walk amongst us like normal people. There's nothing normal about them.

Sharpzebra · 06/01/2026 20:13

Mumsnet is full of it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Crikeyalmighty · 06/01/2026 20:18

You only have to watch the documentary of the Shannon Matthew’s case ( poor girl) to realise the sheer extent some people will go to for attention or imagined rewards/go funds etc . The fact it was her mother was just so truly awful .

Some of them are true though. Maybe listen to your intelligent friends more 😆

Ok what ones are true...and don't tell me orange smarties don't taste of orange and it's because of the colour I taste it...I blindfolded myself

All she's missing is a Trangia stove, so she can rustle up a stir-fry next time!

I was on a train a few months ago and the woman next to me got an entire Battenburg loaf cake out and just ate it like an apple 🤣 I have to admit I was on envy of that much ability to not give a fuck.

I have ADHD. The only thing I’ve ever had because of it is stress!

Totally agree. The fake naval officer story made me like Shock

Like just why.............?

Must have a very empty life. I can't imagine making up such shite.

He got into trouble for it too didn't he? But the humiliation, and everyone knowing what a liar and a fraud he is, is far worse than his fine and suspended sentence.

And the young woman pretending to be Maddie McCann. Just why?

Again, must have an empty life.....

covilha · 06/01/2026 20:39

I used to live in a rural place- just about everyone was bonkers one way or another, myself included. Very little reported violence though, no break ins and the police said they generally visited the village for crime about twice in 5 years.
I moved to a built up area, people much more apparently sane but violence and crime and daily arrests.
I think in close quarters peoples bonker tendencies become emphasised whereas in wider spaces their eccentricity can be socially tolerated and given space to decompress and diffuse so it doesn’t become pathological
sorry, I am not expressing this well, just people were not less mad in the country but somehow it was more tolerated and the truly barmy were afforded the accolade of local character

Lilylolamillie · 06/01/2026 20:42

I had a colleague who had stage 4 cancer and sadly died a few years ago, When she was diagnosed at stage 4 another colleague asked (thankfully not to her but a group of us) why the doctors didn’t just give her a blood transfusion and replace all her blood so it was healthy. She said she’d read online it would cure cancer. She wouldn’t have it that her cancer was in her organs having spread from the primary site via her lymphatic system and so of course this wouldn’t work. And that if this online cure she’d found was real didn’t appear to understand how people would be lining up to give blood so everyone with cancer could be cured. I’m so glad she didn’t spout the bullshit to my unwell colleague.

The same colleague also insisted that a very famous Hollywood actor was contacting her on instagram expressing his love. I can’t remember the name he used but it was a play on words of the famous actor. When we said it wasn’t him that was madly in love with her (& that she’d turned down as she was happily married) she was really offended. She insisted he was real and we were jealous that he’d fallen for her after seeing her photo. Hopefully she didn’t part with any money.

Just to add this person had a good degree, was very intelligent in other ways and well read which made these stories all the more strange.

I think the meme sums it up

Sensitive content
To ask why people are so utterly bonkers?
FlyingApple · 06/01/2026 20:54

I think many lack empathy more than society is willing to admit at this time.

This is hilarious!! We used to get a tiny smidgen when I was growing up😂

Fulmine · 06/01/2026 21:04

The worst are the "false flag" conspiracy theorists who won't accept that things like the Sandy Hook mass shooting actually happened, even in the teeth of absolutely conclusive evidence that that they did. Our own home-grown version was Richard Hall who wouldn't accept that the Manchester bombings happened, and made life hell for people who had been seriously injured claiming that they were making it all up -https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c86q0ypq7q0o. I wonder whether he's ever paid out the damages ordered against him?

Richard Hall wears a brown blazer and blue shirt and tie outside court. He has medium length brown hair and a brown moustache and beard.

Manchester Arena attack conspiracist ordered to pay £45k in damages

Richard Hall claimed the Manchester Arena attack, which killed 22 people, was fake.

Someone has made up a thread about boiled potatoes with lasagne and I just can't deal with anymore internet today.

Not to mention the PP who wants to divorce the DH she still loves because he’s going to inherit some money. Possibly same bonkers person.

If men can become women why not - beam me up as they say!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/01/2026 21:21

The amount of scammers out there, romance and business, people who have a gift for talking their way around things have made millions.
Some don’t even get any financial rewards for their disgusting cat fishing and fake identities, they just cause pain.
Many faking their way into psychology or medical roles caring for the vulnerable.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/01/2026 21:24

I vaguely recall a poster getting caught out in a show me your bedroom thread, using google images. Cringe.

PurpleDisco · 06/01/2026 21:43

I read a thread here a few days ago from a Mum who was worried about her child vomiting black liquid and being itchy and they were snowed in on a mountain. It sounded like a dire situation so when I looked for an update earlier the thread seems to have disappeared. Don’t tell me thst was made up…

I do like that the Marcon people were formally prosecuted but will it stop people? It’s like a new illness. Yes, you had people who exaggerated etc but now it’s full blown wacko stuff

I’m disappointed that Candace Owens didn’t get shut down.
She’s the #1 Macron shit-disturber from what I understand.
She’s got a large following here in the US - but I can’t imagine who that would be, or why they follow such a hateful, divisive person. Oh - maybe they’re all hateful.
Australia refused her entry as did New Zealand - which we found very humorous in this household.

Fulmine · 06/01/2026 21:54

I worked once with someone who was convinced the Royal Family were conspiring against her and her family. She used to write to the Queen asking her to stop. When we asked her why on earth they would bother, she'd hint mysteriously that that was all part of the conspiracy.

I was around 19 at the time, so were most of my colleagues, and we used to giggle about it. However, we came to realise that it was all really rather sad, because this lady's life was taken up by this belief and she must have spent all her time feeling scared to a greater or lesser degree.

Fulmine · 06/01/2026 21:58

Take a look at at the current thread about lockdown. There's an extraordinary number of people seriously claiming it was totally ineffective.
