To ask why people are so utterly bonkers?

Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

There has always bern odd people, and strange things apparantly happening in their lives.

The difference now is that they can throw it all over the internet. 🤷‍♀️

Someone has made up a thread about boiled potatoes with lasagne and I just can't deal with anymore internet today.

I just read that thread - your comment to this one did make me chuckle 🤭

I went away and thought about that-is it different to garlic bread? Bread with pasta or potatoes with pasta?

Dollyfloss · 06/01/2026 18:02

Nothing has changed - it’s just that with the advent of the internet we now get to see a much bigger demographic of nutters, charlatans and con men and the crazy stuff they do.

It used to just be the odd story in Take A Break or the Sun 😂

Nah people have always been bonkers.

Exactly - that's what the Colosseums were all about - social media is just the modern / digital version.

wasdarknowblond · 06/01/2026 18:26

Yeah, these are people that are allowed to vote too - that’s scary.

Social media. It's the curse of modern life. And I'm replying to you on it.

Chumbawomble · 06/01/2026 18:36

Think there have always been bs artists but you'd only come across them on a bus or in a pub where you would try to be polite and then move elsewhere. Now they have a platform and can broadcast their nonsense far and wide. They should be called out where possible and charged if being malicious. In particular, trolls who target bereaved families should be charged immediately and have their phones/laptops taken away.

Mumandcarer80 · 06/01/2026 18:36

Nezukokamado · 05/01/2026 16:59

She was boiling potatoes for her lasagne and putting cheese in the bechamel. Lasagne is not a complicated dish. Had to be a wind up?!

I put cheese in my bechamel so it becomes a cheese sauce. Just because I like it better than putting the cheese on top of the bechamel sauce. I don’t do it with potatoes though we have garlic bread. All goes down the same way I don’t see what difference it makes.

Why did they prosecute the people with Brigette Macron? Who cares if she is or isn't a man?

Well, I imagine she cares…

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 05/01/2026 17:17

The potato wasn't going in the lasagne - she did explain that. Boiled potatoes with butter were being served alongside a lasagne. There's nothing wrong with that, we've done that ourselves and it's a nice combination.

That's even more bonkers. Why would you have potatoes on the side of a pasta dish? At least she solved her own problem (no lasagne sheets). She can use potatoes instead.

Except she had already cooked the potatoes even although she was prepping the meal only. Then they didn't know how to warm them up in the pan as they were cold and they would burn? Of course it wasn't real .....

Why is it bonkers? We have potato with pasta all the time.

I worked with a cancer faker and she did it for the money - people fundraised so she could take her little children to Disneyland for a final family holiday. After she got busted, she left that particular job and popped up a few months later, in a different job, claiming to have terminal heart failure - and yes, you've guessed it, she wanted to take her DC on one final family holiday before she died. This was all more than a decade ago and she's still alive and well, though God knows what fatal illness she is currently pretending to have.

It amounted to cyber bullying given the number of times it was posted and the number of views (tens of thousands for some of the posts) and of course because it was wholly untrue. The main perpetrator was a 51 year-old french woman - who also claims to be a medium - who was given a six-month custodial sentence.

Isn't that a shepherds pie you cant be arsed to mash. Discuss...I'm off too🤣

I don't know, but I have been talking to people I know and think are intelligent level headed people and suddenly they come out with the maddest conspiracy theories:

There's a cabal of rich people who run the world or it's the masons
Planes are the main cause of global warming.
The poor lady who fell in a river a couple of years was murdered by the people who own the nearby campsite because they didn't like dogs.
Etc

I just don't understand why you would believe things like that with no proof or reason. Some are funny, some are ridiculous and some like the story that Muslim people were being murdered if they went to hospital with COVID cost lives.

The guy who dressed up as an admiral...why just why? If you want to belong then join the round table or a lions club or the masons and do good things

Some of them are true though. Maybe listen to your intelligent friends more 😆

Oh is that one fake? Strange thing to do. But I find it odd how people start threads on the most inane things sometimes, like every minor situation has to be turned into a thread.

veryannoyedtbh · 05/01/2026 17:04

I do like that the Marcon people were formally prosecuted but will it stop people? It’s like a new illness. Yes, you had people who exaggerated etc but now it’s full blown wacko stuff

Nah, it's not new at all. Think of that ye olde woman who pretended she'd given birth to rabbits and a bunch of scientists believed her. Or the folk who put a cockerel on trial for witchcraft. Humans have been and always will be crackers.

Favouritefruits · 06/01/2026 19:24

My fil claims to have cancer and had an only a few years to live, 15years later he’s still here fit and healthy. Nobody has said they don’t believe him and even I’ve gone along with it because I don’t want to be the twat who says someone has lied about having cancer! I can easily see how people are believed!

I don't think it was fake, I think @BarryKentPoet was being witty about the realms of madness spanning from the macro(n) level in the OP to the micro level of the spuds thread.

lifeonmars100 · 06/01/2026 19:35

MyPetLampshade · 05/01/2026 16:56

I don't think that thread's made up.
But in answer to the OP, folk have always been mad. Nowt as queer as folk. The internet just gives new outlets for it!

people have always been bonkers but pre-internet it was much more time consuming to do things like poison pen letters and the reach was very small. If you wanted to compose a missive made from letters of the alaphabet cut out from a newspaper you would have to go to a lot of of time and trouble and it must have take ages. These days you just go online, say stuff and potentially reach millions.

SereneGoose · 06/01/2026 19:35

We interviewed a guy who told us he was SAS and I was like yeah right...gave him the job anyway as he was best candidate .turned out he absolutely was SAS...on the WDW show in first couple of series...I was mortified.
