Sindy was far superior to Barbie

I feel sorry for girls today who don’t know the pleasure of playing with a doll whose arms and legs bent (sometimes resulting in a nasty open fracture but never mind). I loved my Sindys and the outfits and accessories were so much better and more conducive to imaginary play than the Barbie stuff I see around. Barbie outfits in particular look shite to me.

Does anyone know of a poseable doll like Sindy that comes with good accessories? I know my granddaughter would love a ballerina, or a police officer, or a doll that wore normal clothes.

I’m Team Sindy too!
My Dsis bought me a Sindy Dreamboat (it converts from a gondola to a table and chairs!) recently and the only Sindy she could get was in a very indecent swimsuit, so I have been buying her some clothes on Vinted.
I also got her a bedroom set, Paul and a horse and carriage. My Dsis has started something 😆🤦‍♀️

Born in the 60’s, I was a Barbie girl all the way although at the time they were difficult to find and relatively expensive. Owing to my fierce loyalty to Barbie, I thought Sindy was an interloper and unworthy. I was also very troubled by the fact that her head was enormous (at least in the 60s incarnation - she seems to have had a subsequent head-shrinking makeover!)

Ymamiss · 05/01/2026 11:42

I had a Sindy camper van! I remember it took my grandfather hours to remove and install all of the little plastic bits!

WingingItSince1973 · 05/01/2026 11:44

Absolutely. Agree 💯. She was more classy 😊

Ha! 1970s (and earlier, I guess) Sindy's head was enormous! I couldn't get over that either...perhaps that's why I wasn't keen on Blythe (who I posted about upthread) as hers was bloody mahoosive!

KimberleyClark · 05/01/2026 11:48

The Barbies I had in the late 60s/early 70s did have bendable legs.

kittyfairy66 · 05/01/2026 11:55

My daughter 9 plays with my sindy it was the boat that turns into a grand table even got the boy doll forgot he's name but yh she plays with them and my fisher price once upon a time castle

AuntyAngela · 05/01/2026 12:00

I think i thought Barbie was from American and I didn't have one as we'd never been there. Didn't care though, i was living the dream with two Sindy horses. (Strictly speaking one was my older sister's, but I created stables for them, so clearly I had to be in charge.) Same as my brother's Action Man - because he helped Cindy out with the horses.

You can buy modern Sindys. They are similar to the original (face mould based on original) and have now been discontinued, but are available on vinted / ebay etc. They do have hard bodies but are posable as they have jointed arms and legs (you can buy original sindys too they generally cost a LOT)
Example of modern ballerina (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326936225239) this is way overpriced btw. They cost about £35 in argos a couple of years ago. Cheaper examples https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306579072356 and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/376008715616 Searching for Sindy KK or Kids Kreations brings back plenty.

100% Team Sindy!! And I had Pippa who was very horsey and I pretended was her little sister, none of the Skipper business.

Yes!

I remember one day at primary school it was the last day of term and we were told we could bring a toy in. One girl brought Tressy and we were all fascinated and encouraged her to make the hair grow as long as possible. She did and then the mechanism seemed to get stuck so she couldn't wind the hair in again. Tressy turned in to Cousin It.

My Sister had Tressy. She made her hair as long as possible and then couldn't resist cutting it. So tressy had a chin length Bob with a fringe, held in place with lots of hairspray.
A few years later that same Sister went to the hairdressers with very long hair and came home with a pixie cut. Our Mum went berserk.

If you had blonde Sindys you could make their hair dark copper or ashy permanently by using wash in wash out human Shaders and Toners dye. Little pro tip from the late 80s for you there.

PistachioTiramisu · 05/01/2026 12:10

I have to say I didn't like Sindy at all - she was too large and gangly. I had a Tressy doll and a Skipper doll (Barbie's sister). I had loads of clothes for her and kept them in absolutely mint condition. Imagine how upset I was when, aged about 14, I discovered that my mother had given the whole lot away to the daughter of one of her friends! They sell for quite large amounts now.

Can concur that this did indeed work Smile

I have a vintage Sindy with a 1960s nurses outfit. She is a very nice young lady and thoroughly hardworking and respectable.

Barbie is a vacuous slut.

I had that yellow kitchen - adored it !!

Me too, coincidentally the dooer-upper that DH & I bought 25 years ago had a very similar Hygena kitchen.

ChikinLikin · 05/01/2026 12:42

What is Sindy short for?

TeaRoseTallulah · 05/01/2026 12:43

Sindy had eyelashes too,didn't she?

Jamandtoastfortea · 05/01/2026 12:44

Loved Sindy. Played for hours on end with my collection. The latest accessory or piece of furniture was slwsys on my Xmas list! Still have the horse and the (Dallas style) swimming pool in my dad’s attic!

BillieWiper · 05/01/2026 12:44

I thought Sindy was awful! Her head was too big and I didn't think she was as pretty as Barbie. There seemed to be less of a range of Sindys and their accessories. Her clothes seemed more old fashioned. I also used to hate that they couldn't share shoes with Barbie!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 05/01/2026 12:51

I always liked Sindy better. Barbie was always the baddie. 🤣

BlackSwan · 05/01/2026 12:59

Active Sindy - the ballerina. Beautiful. She was the only one I had, given to me by an Aunt who lovingly bought me toys my parents didn't.
My mother got rid of my toys when I moved overseas.

I bought a replacement on Ebay but sadly she's not a brunette as my original was.

outofideas2 · 05/01/2026 13:03

Not sure what happened to my Sandy but I still have Paul (from the early 60s) somewhere in my loft.

ManyPigeons · 05/01/2026 13:05

Sindy has a baby head and an adult body… very bizarre doll

Thortour · 05/01/2026 13:06

Pippa Dolls were supreme.
