Sindy was far superior to Barbie

I feel sorry for girls today who don’t know the pleasure of playing with a doll whose arms and legs bent (sometimes resulting in a nasty open fracture but never mind). I loved my Sindys and the outfits and accessories were so much better and more conducive to imaginary play than the Barbie stuff I see around. Barbie outfits in particular look shite to me.

Does anyone know of a poseable doll like Sindy that comes with good accessories? I know my granddaughter would love a ballerina, or a police officer, or a doll that wore normal clothes.

I loved my Sindy! Great clothes and I got a ‘pop star’ Sindy for my birthday one year. She came with a guitar, microphone and an amp which you put tiny records into - and they played! Sindy songs. God it was amazing!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/01/2026 23:40

OMG it was this one! I loved her!

Sindy was far superior to Barbie

There’s a Sindy museum in Stockholm! Great website too.

Does anyone remember Tressy? The one with growable hair? Or Daisy, the Mary Quant one?

I had a Daisy!! Was literally racking my brain trying to think of the name when I saw your post! I had wanted a Barbie but ended up preferring Daisys clothes and I think she had a Dalmatian dog accessory ( or else I’ve completely imagined that!)

I had Patch like @Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride. I recall she wore dungarees a lot. Also had Pippa but she melted when my Db put her on top of a table lamp to see if she would tan.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 06/01/2026 01:44

I still have my Sindy dolls (well they are at my dad's house). I do have some Barbies too but my mum didn't like Barbie because she was tarty.
Unfortunately some of the Sindy dolls have very extreme haircuts when my sister was practicing to be a hairdresser (based on this example I think it's just as well she decided not to be a hairdresser). My DDs used to play with them too. I know I should get rid of them now but can't quite bring myself too.

namechangetheworld · 06/01/2026 01:54

DD6 received a suprise Sindy (plus horse) for Christmas from a relative. I didn't even realise they were still around! DM still has hers from the 60's and I always much preferred playing with her to my Barbies, I thought she had a much prettier face.

Both DDs are obsessed with the 8 million Barbies in the house but have barely looked at this Sindy. I suspect it's because she's slightly larger so the Barbie clothes won't fit her, and there's not much fun to be had if they can't dress her up in bizarre concoctions of clothes.

WearyAuldWumman · 06/01/2026 02:06

I still have my Sindy, but I think that her arms need to be re-strung. Said arms have also discoloured with age.

I might take her to the Dolls' Hospital in Leith.

Magpie50 · 06/01/2026 02:39

Sindy over Barbie definitely. I remember really wanting Ken too but being disappointed so I gave one of my Sindys gender reassignment with a brutal haircut and a cardboard willy!😂

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 06/01/2026 03:35

I was never allowed Barbie because she was 'tacky' but I had a million Sindys, which I loved! As they were the 90s version they were very Barbie-esque anyway, They were awesome.

Does anyone remember a Barbie/Sindy size riding doll in the 90s? The horses were gorgeous, with a soft 'skin'. They were either standing or trotting, and were unjointed, but the riders were fully jointed. The sets came with a dog too - a labrador or dalmatian or whatever. The tack felt really realistic and the rider's clothes were great quality. I can't find them on Google. They were great too though! I had the stable for my 11th birthday, and was sad because I was aware I was growing out of toys and would barely use it. I wish I could see pictures for nostalgia's sake.

My aunt knitted tiny little patterned sweaters for my Sindy. A little landscape with tiny sheep on it. There is some knitwear in Next this winter that reminds me of it. Happy Sindy memories, thank you!

Are we thinking Paul might not have been that kind of boyfriend…?

Hahaha.
He was based on Paul McCartney I think ? I was too young to have an original Paul but my older cousins had him, with his sports car, I was v jealous. I had a little Sindy Catalogue from my cousin, sadly lost, that listed all Paul’s clothes, based on Beatle type collarless suits etc. It had Sindy’s underwear including proper stockings ! Pre tights, so the very first Sindy.

JaceLancs · 06/01/2026 13:21

I was born in the 60s and first progression from tiny tears was the Amanda Jane range - meant to portray I guess a 6-11 year old - I had loads of outfits including a Brownie one
The first fashion dolls I had came after and were like mini Barbie/Sindy dolls and were Pippa and friends - one of whom was Britt who I loved as she had darker skin
Used to make as well as buy clothes for them too
Not sure why but I never had Barbie or Sindy
Barbie was huge with my DD in the 90s though

Arran2024 · 06/01/2026 13:34

When i was 5, in 1966, I desperately wanted a Barbie but my parents said no. Then on Christmas morning I unwrapped my presents and there she was - Barbie! I was so scared my parents would take her away, I hid her under the sofa! I can remember my mum trying to get me to admit to me having another present and me lying to her face!!

I absolutely hated baby dolls and would not play with them. I guess they decided any doll was better than no dolls.

Anyway, this Barbie was an air hostess. She had pins for earrings which you could pull in and out. And she had proper pull up stockings. I adored her. I had other dolls afterwards, but none as lovely as her.

KimberleyClark · 06/01/2026 13:44

Just remembered I had a Stacie, from the Barbie stable. She had long red hair.

AxolotlEars · 06/01/2026 13:47

Sindy...I loved my nurse Sindy. Loved Pippa too

PistachioTiramisu · 06/01/2026 13:57

A lot of you probably don't remember, but before Barbie diversified into many different persona, there was only one (although she did come in different hair colours). The clothes then were exquisite - made from the best materials - velvet, silk, tulle, cotton, etc. Mostly they were made in Hong Kong and a lot were hand-finished with tiny buttons and zips. My friend's parents used to go to the USA regularly on business and brought back all the latest outfits for her. She was very elegant.

MO0N · 06/01/2026 14:11

I especially remember Pippa's friend Britt with her long straight platinum blonde hair 😍

That was the kind of barbie I had. The clothes were amazing. I had lots of relatives in Canada and that's where we got her from.

WorriedRelative · 06/01/2026 14:18

Sindy was far superior. She could do box splits! Even her wrists worked. So much better than Barbie with her stupid bent elbows!

My Mum still had her Tressy. We were not allowed to play with her unless Mum could join in!

Mum loved the Sindy dolls and made them clothes, including an incredible 80s style lace wedding dress with huge puff sleeves and a veil that would have dwarfed Princess Diana's!

Sequinsoneverythingplease · 06/01/2026 14:27

We always had Sindy and she was ok…I guess…but then one year Mum shook things up and got us “Pink & Pretty” Barbie, one each! whose outfit and accessories could be used to create 12 different outfits, and there is a reason that Christmas stands out for me. We’d wanted Barbies so badly. I aged out after that but my younger sister went on to receive “Peaches and Cream Barbie” “Crystal Barbie” and “Loving You” Barbie the following few years while I looked on jealously. All those years wasted on Ballerina or Horse Riding Sindy 😢

jazzybelle · 06/01/2026 14:46

Definitely Sindy. I had a Sindy red sportscar.

Nicecatneighbour · 05/01/2026 10:47

I had a Tressy, she wore a purple lurex trouser suit. I also had a doll in the style of Sindy called Pippa. She may have been related. Or may just have been her (cheaper) friend.🫢

I think Pippa was Sindys sister. I loved my Sindy doll. She felt more approachable than Barbie 😆 A friend had Sindy townhouse and I loved it so much.
Or maybe it was a Barbie? It had a lift, I remember that
