Sindy was far superior to Barbie

I feel sorry for girls today who don’t know the pleasure of playing with a doll whose arms and legs bent (sometimes resulting in a nasty open fracture but never mind). I loved my Sindys and the outfits and accessories were so much better and more conducive to imaginary play than the Barbie stuff I see around. Barbie outfits in particular look shite to me.

Does anyone know of a poseable doll like Sindy that comes with good accessories? I know my granddaughter would love a ballerina, or a police officer, or a doll that wore normal clothes.

I only had Sindy when I was young and between my two best friends and I, we had all Sindys and only one Barbie and the Barbie was always the evil Stepmother!

My girls had Lottie dolls when they were young - they are great.

Sindy was superior and Masquerade Sindy was best of the lot, with her wee fan and mask and all that curly hair. Can't believe my mum gave mine to my cousin's daughter (to be fair I was in my 30s at the time).
Also between me and sisters we had ballet Sindy, "rain and shine" Sindy (she had a sundress and also a raincoat and umbrella) and various generic Sindys.

Sindy all the way. She had a pony and a boyfriend with hair.

I had the pony. And my Sindy was brunette! I loved her and played with her obsessively for years.

Bowednotbroken · 05/01/2026 10:36

I had a Sindy and a Tressy and her hair eventually wouldn’t retract too!
I also had a Sindy bed and wardrobe, and I think my sister had the horse? Many hours of fun.

YANBU, I loved my Sindys - ballerina, majorette and equestrian. I have rarely been so jealous as when my cousin got the Sindy house for Christmas.

leporello · 05/01/2026 10:38

They had a thing going on with my brother's Action Men though, tut tut.

UnusualOtter · 05/01/2026 10:39

I also had this one which Google tells me was called Fair Lady Sindy

I wanted a Barbie and full from-frou but got Sindy and her practical clothes instead, “because you’ve got brown hair”. Went off the whole doll and dressing up thing pretty quickly after that.

My Sindys were all blonde!

IMissTheLittleBluePackets · 05/01/2026 10:42

My Sindys and Barbies lived harmoniously in one section of my bedroom so I never paid too much attention to what was 'Sindy' and what was 'Barbie'.

However, I've been surprised as an adult when I've looked up my favourite playsets and discovered that most of them were Sindy! The Make Up Counter, Hair Salon, Cafe etc, all Sindy.

KimberleyClark · 05/01/2026 10:43

I had a talking Barbie at one point. When you pulled the string at the back of her neck she would make inane comments like “I have a date tonight” and “how shall I wear my hair?”

The hair salon was brilliant. My best Christmas present!

Always been a bit freaked out by "realistic" dolls and action figures and find the more joints they get the more the uncanny valley feeling increases. I much prefer more stylised toys.

WonderfulSmith · 05/01/2026 10:45

I had Sindy. She was much more down to earth than Barbie. The Sindy magic cooker was one of the finest toys ever made.

I was not allowed Sindy as she was a slut, according to my not-so-DM

Who was actually having many affairs, and was in no position to comment ;)

I mean, family issues aside (and I’m sorry to hear that) Sindy was definitely not a slut. If anything she was frigid. She went on wholesome camping trips and pony rides, she wore demure clothes that covered all her body in a wonderful array of colours (not just fucking pink or ‘girly’ colours) and she had a white wedding.

Does anyone remember Tressy? The one with growable hair? Or Daisy, the Mary Quant one?

I was so so happy to have a Tressy doll bought for me by my ‘aunty’. Her spoilt son, who got everything he asked for, was jealous and shoved her down the toilet beyond the u bend. Never to be seen again. I’m still upset decades later.
Sindy definitely superior to Barbie.

I had a Tressy, she wore a purple lurex trouser suit. I also had a doll in the style of Sindy called Pippa. She may have been related. Or may just have been her (cheaper) friend.🫢

I had Sindy but wasn’t allowed Barbie for the same reason 🤣

FranticFrankie · 05/01/2026 10:50

Loved Sindy!!! We had the furniture- the bedside table with a little photo of her boyfriend Paul on it 😍
Loved her outfits- ski jacket with faux fur trimmed hood was a favourite
Also had a Tressy- could change her hair from long to short 😊

Missymarple · 05/01/2026 10:51

My DS had a Sindy and I had Barbie which I thought was far superior because she had much more glamorous dresses and daintier feet and shoes. And I wonder why I had such a terrible body image growing up...

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/01/2026 10:51

I don't know where you live. I live in an area with a lot of children, they play with dolls.
My daughter played with dolls until she was 12.
Barbie was much better than Sindy imo. I remember getting the most beautiful barbie for my birthday, peaches and cream, with fancy earrings and a gown.
Blaming a doll on body issues is silly, no blamed the cabbage patch kid, another favourite of mine.

ArticWillow · 05/01/2026 10:55

I only had Barbie, I loved all the different outfits. I remember having a huge bag of clothes and accessories. To me, she was a proper princess who could be anything!
I only fell out with Barbie when she went to my sisters hair salon where she got a pixie haircut and became a militant feminist!

LibertyLily · 05/01/2026 10:56

I had both Barbies and Sindys, but much preferred my Barbies - they were way more glamorous imo. This was the mid 70s onwards, when I think Barbie was far better than the later versions. My preference is for the early 70s Barbies.

I also had a Mary Quant Daisy, but I cut off all her lovely curly hair which I don't recall doing to the others!

My parents kept all my dolls/their accessories in their attic and in the early 2000s when we'd just discovered selling on eBay, I sold the lot (individually). They went for close to 2k in total...although the biggest win was for Blythe - a doll I never really took to at the time - who sold for over £800 alone (worth even more now, I think). Wish I'd kept them though!

Other way round, surely? Sindy was wholesome whereas Barbie was not.
Sindy definitely had superior accessories and clothing choices. I loved the Sindy Mix n Match outfit sets. The brown and yellow set being a favourite (well, it was the seventies…)

Yanbu. I would die on this hill.

Me too. I had ballet Sindy. She was epic.
