To think loo roll is not enough

Not the nicest subject in the world -sorry!

I live abroad and bathrooms have bidees (spelling) I don’t use these, but always use wet toilet wipes which are said to be easily disposable here and not harmful to the environment
Since doing this it makes me think how normal loo roll paper is pretty gross and just can’t possibly get you properly clean 😬

The vaseline thing works, seriously.
You really don't need much, definitely not a, big smear blob of it.

Not really, if you’ve washed yourself properly they will only be drying a clean bum.

which reminds me of the other thread where a lot of people were discussing flannels, and availability or not in hotels. If you’re in southern Europe your “facecloth” is probably the bidet towel.

But by that logic, you'd obviously be fine using a tea towel that you just used to dry your bum and then use it to immediately dry your coffee mugs...

Frogbear · 04/01/2026 15:10

Even when changing a baby’s nappy, parents use wet wipes / cloths with water rather than dry tissue. Dry toilet paper doesn’t get you clean enough.

We are about to have a bidet gun installed as redoing our bathroom. It will come with a mixer so that we don’t need to worry about cold water in winter!

MackenCheese · 04/01/2026 15:10

If you have a home cloakroom/bathroom which has a toilet and a hand basin, why cant you moisten some toilet tissue, then wipe your bum (do it a few times with a fresh wad until clean). Obviously this wont work in public facilities. I cannot believe people are not doing this. Perfectly flushable. End of.

Cappuccino5 · 04/01/2026 14:06

We use the flushable toilet wipes. Environmental issues aside, toilet paper alone isn’t enough.

They still shouldn’t be flushed.

LongTermLurker · 04/01/2026 15:10

We have bidet guns here - I have one bathroom with a mixer, and one just cold water. I'm actually fine with the cold! Refreshing :-D. Going on holiday is a bit weird now as it seems pretty gross to make do with loo roll.

That's because the poo has been potentially sitting there squished a bit and has spread around.

Just because they flush away doesn't mean they break down. Please don't flush them.

Whydontyoujustfuckoff · 04/01/2026 15:14

I use either baby lotion, a squirt of liquid soap or even a scoosh of hand sanitizer (can be a bit nippy at times, tbh 🤣).
Sometimes, I’ll just actually get the bar or soap, wet it then give my arse a wash with it!
Dry off with toilet paper.

Both DC are fastidious, too. Not so sure about DH although he has a shower morning and night so I’ll let him off.

Can’t stand not feeling properly clean.
Just because you can’t see this particular body part, doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be kept clean.

Toilet paper does NOT clean.

Do not flush them even if they say they’re flushable!! The manufacturing standards for these things are quite frankly appalling. Most should be flushed one at a time on a full flush and even then they are clogging up sewers because they don’t break down in the same way that tissue does.

I use some hand sanitizer if I’m out and I need to go. Ok, it can be a bit nippy for a minute but I prefer that to feeling unclean.

to be honest I couldn’t care less what other people do.

i personally do use wet wipes, flushable on packaging. It’s basically damp toilet paper. I
then shower. I’m totally clean after a poo. I couldn’t care less if others have an issue with what I do, I’d much rather be clean than walking around with any residual shit festering.

If you're showering immediately after why do you need the wet wipes? My brother is a plumber and says none of the so called flushable wipes are. They cause so many problems. At least bin then if you use them.
I think the gels like wype are a much better solution

Who else uses the bar of soap you are using on your arse!?

pottylolly · 04/01/2026 15:20

I agree, but countries where bidets are used often transmit ecoli & salmonella because they don’t / can’t clean up the water that spills hygienically. This happens in Japan too even when fancy toilets are used. And the ‘solution’ usually evolves into locals never using public toilets.

Allseeingallknowing · 04/01/2026 14:40

I’m surprised there aren’t more of these cleansing gels available, would bring price down too.

Aloe Gel works exactly the same but is much cheaper.

modernminimalist · 04/01/2026 15:21

Soap and water for me, bottle washing is a game changer for cystitis/UTIs

bumsahoy · 04/01/2026 15:22

I make my own budget version of wype:
4 parts witch hazel
1 part glycerin
1 part aloe vera
for extra ‘glide’ i put in a little fractionated coconut oil as well, but you done need it.
i put it in an old pump bottle, one pump on a bit of loo roll after dabbing with normal loo roll (not wiping, that just smears things around!)
works a treat and lasts for ages Smile

FrostAtMinuit · 04/01/2026 15:23

I’d love to have a proper bidet. For now I use ordinary lavatory paper dry then wet under the tap and then dry again.

Whydontyoujustfuckoff · 04/01/2026 15:24

TheCurious0range · 04/01/2026 15:19

Who else uses the bar of soap you are using on your arse!?

The same people who use the same bar of soap that they’ve washed their own arse with in the shower?
What a stupid thing to say!

Soap is for WASHING. You then “wash” the soap and I’d be washing my hands anyway!

Okiedokie123 · 04/01/2026 15:25

There really isn’t any such thing as flushable wipes. Even if it says they are.
I saw a product called Wype recommended on here a few days ago and was tempted to get some. It does seem like a very good option. But then I realised that for me….. loo paper (of the cheapest variety and I don’t use that much I don’t think) for me….. really is enough.

MrMucker · 04/01/2026 15:26

I reckon it needs mentioning that what you eat has a far bigger impact on wiping needs, than what you use to wipe.

JenniferBooth · 04/01/2026 15:28

Melassa · 04/01/2026 14:39

Yes this! I also live in a country with bidets and they are the simplest solution and really keep you fresh. What’s stopping you from using yours? British reticence about aiming water at your fanny?

lol imagine the uproar and use of the word entitled if us social housing tenants started to demand that HAs fit bidets in our bathrooms. I use toilet paper and wet wipes because i have bowel issues but i put them in nappy bags and bin them. As for showering lol again. All i have is a bath, but i bet the eco warriors wouldnt want me to fill that each time either.

NewYearSameYou · 04/01/2026 15:29

Makinglasagnatakesages · 04/01/2026 14:05

They’re not wet wipes though, they’re biodegradable toilet wipes, you can also put them in the toilet bin then throw away and change the bin liner

No, they're not. They don't break down at the rate you'd need them to break down to not block pipes.

BlueMum16 · 04/01/2026 15:29

Wash, wipes or toilet paper. All a personal choice

But remember the only things that should go down the toilet though is poo, pee and toilet paper. Do not flush wipes, tampons, pads, cotton buds, toys or cheese wrappers - came out of a neighbours blocked drain the other day.
