To think loo roll is not enough

Not the nicest subject in the world -sorry!

I live abroad and bathrooms have bidees (spelling) I don’t use these, but always use wet toilet wipes which are said to be easily disposable here and not harmful to the environment
Since doing this it makes me think how normal loo roll paper is pretty gross and just can’t possibly get you properly clean 😬

I don’t like the idea of all of these wipes going in to land fill or particularly the idea of having a load of bagged used wipes in the bathroom bin tbh.

A bidet, a hose attachment, or just a specially designed jug by the loo is what is standard in other cultures and many other countries and I don’t understand why they aren’t possible for everyone in the uk?

BreezyPeachGoose · 04/01/2026 14:25

Bum hose is the definitive for cleanliness, anything less is a smear.

Honestly is no one willing to do even the bare minimum to help the environment. This is so wasteful and unnecessary. Humans have been wiping their arses with toilet roll for decades without drama. If you really must, use a bidet, don't create mountains of rubbish that can't be flushed and can't be recycled.

I agree. I don't use wipes in the bathroom at all.

I'll very occasionally use one if I end up with sticky hands when I am out, but that's rare and I always bin it, not flush.

BarbieBrightSide · 04/01/2026 14:25

Before discovering Wype, I had a hand held / portable bidet at home, which was also good, but not practical for out and about! Bigger than I was expecting and needed to be very near a sink for soap.

I think it was Wype's marketing that was along the lines of - if you got poo on your arm, would you only use dry paper to clean it off? And if not, why do you only do that to your bum? (Perhaps worded better, but you get the gist!)

@FishPie2 you can get them with temp control now. It’s great.

HangingOver · 04/01/2026 14:27

Okay sorry this is waaay TMI but... With the bum hoses.... Do you not worry that you're firing poop water towards your fanny? I used them in Indonesia and thought they were awesome but that was always at the back of my mind... Or are you somehow supposed to fire the water from the front?

66babe · 04/01/2026 14:28

I’ve used toilet paper alone for almost 60 years and my bums never melted or eroded in a toxic mess. I also feel clean , tidy and no complaints from anyone privileged enough to get close and personal.

Tattiana · 04/01/2026 14:28

I’ve always thought this. I just use toilet roll so there is a bit of dissonance but really, if you got poo on any other part of your body you would not deem toilet roll to be sufficient to clean it.

Shorten · 04/01/2026 14:31

to be honest I couldn’t care less what other people do.

i personally do use wet wipes, flushable on packaging. It’s basically damp toilet paper. I
then shower. I’m totally clean after a poo. I couldn’t care less if others have an issue with what I do, I’d much rather be clean than walking around with any residual shit festering.

clamshell24 · 04/01/2026 14:33

No, you're wrong and adding to pollution with your excessive cleaning worries. Just how 'clean' do you need to be?

Nevermind91 · 04/01/2026 14:33

Flushable wipes are no better for the sewage system than flushable socks or flushable bread. They are a menace.

DataColour · 04/01/2026 14:34

I also grew up in a country where water was used and bidets too.
Now I just soak a wad of toilet paper from the sink and use it to wipe initially and finish off with dry toilet paper. Luckily we have sinks within reach near the toilets at home and also at my workplace.

Hedjwitch · 04/01/2026 14:38

Wype, or any other type of cleansing lotion on loo paper.

ttcat37 · 04/01/2026 14:38

Perhaps it’s just conditioning but putting shitty bum wipes in the bathroom bin seems more rotten than a bumhole having traces of poo on it for the time being pooing and showering.

Melassa · 04/01/2026 14:39

Bikergran · 04/01/2026 14:12

Why on earth would you not use the bidet? So much better than environmentally polluting wipes.

Yes this! I also live in a country with bidets and they are the simplest solution and really keep you fresh. What’s stopping you from using yours? British reticence about aiming water at your fanny?

Moonmelodies · 04/01/2026 14:39

These places with bidets, surely you still have to wipe afterwards with something, otherwise you're gonna have a wet arse?

FunMustard · 04/01/2026 14:40

I don't require my bumhole to be clean enough to eat off, it's between my cheeks and regularly washed, so paper is generally enough. I do occasionally use wet loo roll or even just wash as the sink is next to the toilet anyway, but I don't generally.

Just paper has been fine for many decades in this country and I don't recall smelling shit wherever I go, so while I'd like to install a bidet when we do our bathroom, I'm not going to bother myself too much at this point.

I don't really care what other people are doing with their bumholes either. I'm not going to get close to them.

You use a bidet towel, which normally hangs next to the bidet.

Wype, or any other type of cleansing lotion on loo paper.

I’m surprised there aren’t more of these cleansing gels available, would bring price down too.

Eeeeeew!

Mischance · 04/01/2026 14:41

I use wype and wet wipes (which go in the bin) - have a particular problem as I have prolapsed piles so getting it all cleaned is a bit of an art!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 04/01/2026 14:44

Wype is amazing, just dry paper feels gross now without a squirt of gel at the end to freshen up.

Not2identifying · 04/01/2026 14:45

Where can you buy Wype?

Melassa · 04/01/2026 14:45

Allseeingallknowing · 04/01/2026 14:41

Eeeeeew!

Not really, if you’ve washed yourself properly they will only be drying a clean bum.

which reminds me of the other thread where a lot of people were discussing flannels, and availability or not in hotels. If you’re in southern Europe your “facecloth” is probably the bidet towel.
