To think loo roll is not enough

Not the nicest subject in the world -sorry!

I live abroad and bathrooms have bidees (spelling) I don’t use these, but always use wet toilet wipes which are said to be easily disposable here and not harmful to the environment
Since doing this it makes me think how normal loo roll paper is pretty gross and just can’t possibly get you properly clean 😬

I have always lathered up my hands or a flannel, and have never applied the soap directly to my body- I thought that’s what everyone did!

This thread is a revelation 🤣🙌

Andrex washlets have passed and been accredited as ‘fine to flush’ by the water board. I’ve used them for years without any issues, they have passed stringent tests but should only be flushed 1 at a time. Pura have also passed but I’m not sure on other brands. Those 2 are cellulose based with 0% plastic so they do actually break down.

I know I’m a terribly immature person, but first the phrase “bidet gun” made me laugh. Currently freezing in Scotland (snow yesterday) and I thought of using one in winter, and I’ve just got this mental picture of hearing a spray of water, then seeing someone’s horrified face whilst they go, “I’ve frozen my arsehole!” And now I’m laughing like a loon. 😂 I swear, I’m an actual adult, though sometimes for serious adulting, I need an adultier adult for help.

We always call it that. It is freezing where I live and that is why I don't use it in winter and what you said about the horrified face is just what happened. We lived in Asia and the water was always warm, When we had it fitted here I never thought about the cold water until the first time I used it, swore quite badly and almost jumped into the sink.
It now comes on and goes off with the central heating.

Oh gosh!!!!! Poor you! Yes, I can imagine it was always warm in Asia for the water. If I tried that trick here in Scotland, I’d be on the ceiling. The water is absolutely arctic starting in October. Have you seen those squeeze bottles that work like a very cheap bidet? Might be a winter option if you need one.

They’re not wet wipes though, they’re biodegradable toilet wipes, you can also put them in the toilet bin then throw away and change the bin liner

No such thing! If you watch these blocked drains programmes you’ll see that! They cannot be flushed and they definitely are not biodegradable

Bedtelly · 04/01/2026 14:07

My husband is a plumber and says there's no such thing as flushable wipes btw

Thank you! Someone in the know! 👏

There was a woman from the environmental protection agency in Ireland on the radio before Christmas saying wet wipes aren’t ok and how disgusting the clogs are that need to be sorted. If you wipe with toilet roll, which is fine to flush then when you have a shower you’ll be washing off anything left over. Wet wipes should honestly just be banned except in the cases where they’re needed for children/ adults that have issues and need the additional help.

I put water on the toilet paper.

Years ago (when I was a baby) it was cottonwool and warm water for babies bottoms. I did the same for my kids and no wet wipes were needed. Not sure how bad for landfill cotton wool is these days. I never used disposable nappies though. Always used the kushies washables

LLJETO · 05/01/2026 15:23

I use a ‘bidet spray bottle’..just keep it next to the loo and fill with water from the sink, which is next to the loo. I also use Wype when I’m out and about (another who fell for the ads and loves it) - and we have a larger bottle next to the loo for anyone who wants to use it.

QwertyAtThirty · 05/01/2026 18:23

I'm just here to post this:

Thedownwardspiralpath · 04/01/2026 22:12

It’s much cheaper to use a lotion.

My mum used Baby Lotion and cotton wool on our bottoms before baby wipes were popular. That would probably work with toilet paper, might try it.

Suffolker · 05/01/2026 18:43

Came on to recommend ‘wype’ but I can see many others have already done so! Great product.

TittyGajillions · 05/01/2026 18:54

KimberleyClark · 05/01/2026 14:21

It would never occur to me to rub a bar of soap directly on my body. I lather it up in my hands then apply the lather. Ditto with shower gel/body wash - don’t squirt it directly onto my body, squirt it into my hands, then body.

That's what most people do surely? I'm getting vibes that that poster could start an argument in an empty room!

DuchessofStaffordshire · 05/01/2026 19:10

Disturbia81 · 04/01/2026 14:19

Yes I lived abroad where they have bum hoses, amazing! I realised then that dry toilet paper just doesn’t get it all off. So now I use wipes and bin them.

I suppose you could use a water flosser, but you'd probably have to work on securing the correct angle.

MagicStarrz · 05/01/2026 19:16

So you have access to a bidet and opt to use wipes instead? How odd.

I do agree that dry toilet paper doesn't do the job but nor do wipes. We have a bidet hose at home.

Emmz1510 · 05/01/2026 19:17

Kayoh · 04/01/2026 14:19

Honestly is no one willing to do even the bare minimum to help the environment. This is so wasteful and unnecessary. Humans have been wiping their arses with toilet roll for decades without drama. If you really must, use a bidet, don't create mountains of rubbish that can't be flushed and can't be recycled.

Agreed. I thought I must be mad reading this post! I use toilet paper, always have and always will. Bowel movements should make minimal mess if you have a healthy diet. Wipes are terrible for the environment. And surely most people shower every day anyway? That should be sufficient.

WinterWooliesBaa · 05/01/2026 19:22

BasilPersil · 04/01/2026 17:56

(the water doesn't go everywhere! You're sat on the loo while you are using it!)

Ah you underestimate my ability to make a mess! I was bad enough before the stroke, now I'm likely to wash the ceiling! 🤣🤣

besides the whole thing seems incredibly unhygienic to me.

MagicStarrz · 05/01/2026 19:24

It's also my understanding that no wipes are truly flushable. I thought Wype was rubbish. It felt like the kind of gel they rub on you when you have an ultrasound. So slimy so no friction to actually clean. Bum guns do clean you. I use one and then wipe with loo roll and there's no residue. We do not use bum towels.

WinterWooliesBaa · 05/01/2026 19:31

Allseeingallknowing · 04/01/2026 16:54

We had them when living in Spain. I do miss them . They should be a standard part of bathroom suites.

No thank you. I don't want a communal arse washing bowl to be common place in bathrooms. Clean your arse with minimal impact on others. Please.

SouthernNights59 · 05/01/2026 19:36

Simonjt · 05/01/2026 07:10

You rub a soap bottle or bar on your body? Most people just lather their hands, or if liquid squirt it onto their hands/a flannel/a body puff thingy. Rubbing a bar on your body is not normal, plus if someone did that it wouldn’t be a communal bar anyway.

I don't know why it astonishes me after all these years on MN, but each day brings a new level of weirdness. Of course it is normal to rub a bar of soap on your body, and has been for a very long time - and do you really think each member of a household has their own bar of soap.

I really had no idea how many strange people there are in the world who seemingly have never encountered perfectly normal and natural things.

Womaninhouse17 · 05/01/2026 19:37

Just wet a bit of toilet paper. Cheaper and flushable.

SouthernNights59 · 05/01/2026 19:38

Natsku · 05/01/2026 03:08

Not that I use them at work, but we have bum guns in our work toilets and most public toilets have them too where I am.

Good for you. I am 66 and have never seen a bum gun in my whole life.

suburburban · 05/01/2026 19:46

Some of the houses I have looked at recently with 80s bathrooms have bidets in them.

perhaps this was before people had decent showers

Jllllllll · 05/01/2026 19:59

Sorry but how dirty is your butt that you can’t wipe it with toilet paper?? I assume you shower daily and change your underwear? That should suffice!

WinterWooliesBaa · 05/01/2026 20:07

Natsku · 05/01/2026 03:08

See, to me, that's super grim. People sharing a bum gun where many of them will have dirty hands 🤮
