Venezuelans are happy maduro is gone, I doubt they'll be happy with what comes next.

ocolo · 03/01/2026 19:13

The US army needs to refuse to engage and engineer a coup.

Very few countries are broadly ‘happy’ with their governance, but hopefully whatever comes next won’t enable the country to be a sorting office for drugs while violating the basic human rights of the population.

Why?

Uricon2 · 03/01/2026 19:16

The problem is with Trump (and Putin) is that they are cunning enough not to allow for the equivalent of the Praetorian guard to come running down the corridor, gladius drawn, to end their reign, as with some of the madder Roman Emperors.

Difficult.

Mlddleoftheroad · 03/01/2026 19:18

That press conference sounded like some sixth formers coming down from s high the night before. It was infantile.

Ha ha, let's invade another country, we're now in charge, you effed around- 51st state isn't Canada then.

Bunch of fuckwits.

The infrastructure of the Venezuelan oil industry is shockingly poor. Do you not think western control would invest in infrastructure improvements? It benefits them as they can fully utilise the oil reserves

Exactly. The USA and US run oil companies will invest in infrastructure improvements which of course will benefit them as they take control and utilise all the oil reserves. Venezuelans will never see the benefit or profit from it.

ocolo · 03/01/2026 19:19

Beammeupbob · 03/01/2026 19:15

Why?

Because Trump is out of control and will take Greenland next. Europe will be at war then. surely the madman has to be stopped somehow.

But then again the citizens of the U S are either in full support of the madman, or are afraid of him, and neither scenario is good.

Just because I don’t like Keir Starmer, doesn’t mean I want trump to invade and run the country to be more profitable 😂

Edited

There will probably be a multiplier effect from the infrastructure spending.

The US companies would probably pay some tax in Venezuela I'd be shocked if they paid 0.

It’s not western control it’s Trump control and the person most likely to benefit will be - Trump, not Venezuelans .Why can’t the opposition take control and make the decisions?

The Venezuelan economy is in a complete mess. Their oil industry itself is already a mess with crumbling infrastructure due to decades of malinvestment. Western control and investment from oil majors can restore output to its full potential.

you can say all you want, it doesn’t justify it and there will always be a reason that benefits old men who justify wars. Thanks for your time in this but it’s pointless .been here and same old excuses. It reads the same

JHound · 03/01/2026 19:29

I do wonder what happened to “No New Wars”.

This is what colonisers always tell themselves…(and a lot of that hardship is from US sanctions).

The Venezuelan economic hardship does not justify foreign invasion and occupation.

Well yes but he meant “except new wars that bring oil and money to the U.S.”

The Venezuelans themselves are technically colonisers aren’t they?

I've just about given up on the world, a nutter in both America and Russia China is not far behind. What on earth can I do?

Nothing, is my sad answer.

so I'm just bubbling up with my immediate family. Trump would definitely not approve. My world view is that from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs.

We, the family, try to extend this to our friends and neighbours.

but it's always a very small circle.

I see some light. Mondami in New York for example.

but that light burns very low sometimes.

user1471453601 · 03/01/2026 19:35

How rude of me, it's Mandami, of course

Venezuelans are celebrating. The country has been through hell. This also may be good for the people of Iran who are trying to topple their own dictator, who was in cahoots with Maduro. The Democrats had put a $50 million bounty on Maduro and called him a Trump ally, so they are no doubt delighted at the arrest too. Altogether, rambling aside, Trump seems to have played a blinder. Let's hope Iran is next - women, life, freedom.

You been at the Scotch?

TBH i think starmer is worse than trump.
At least I see trump doing his job even if the man's a loony, he's doing something.
What is the uk starmer doing 🤔, nothing just running the uk down.

Came here to say the same. I'd prefer Donald Trump to run the uk than starmer
