Trump does not care about Venezuelans. It's Oil and Power.
Yes Maduro was bad. But Trump's action is simply illegal and profoundly dangerous.

The Washington Post reports that Donald Trump withheld support for María Corina Machado because she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump’s explanation, per the report:
“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today.”

So I supposed people who suddenly care so much about Venezuela would feel the same if this is done to Putin in Russia. Maduro is the Putin of Latin America.
I wish it was only on MN but in the U.K. the press that never happened to care about Venezuela are very bias and just caring about their anti-American feelings. Even Spanish left leaning newspapers like el Pais are giving much less bias info. Very informative articles and background.

Which is the point perhaps which illustrates how crazy this is. Did Putin capture Zelensky and his wife in 2022? No. And yes, he probably could have.

Putin tried to capture Zelensky in 2022, and failed. He's been trying and failing ever since. Maduro was exactly where Delta Force expected him to be, Zelensky moves around regularly to avoid being predictable.

Which just goes to show that before oil, the main motivation was ego. Trump's, and the "Secretary of War" Pete Kegsbreath's.

On the contrary, I suspect that if Trump captured Putin with no apparent idea of what the next steps might be, and no clear control of Russia, there would be huge alarm.

Well there is a plan in the case of Venezuela. It is happening. It is as good as it gets under the circumstances. The transition that is.

Russia and China have been benefiting from Venezuelan trades for years until now. No one seemed to care that people were starving and not seeing a penny from this and the regime stole and hoard all the money.

i don’t get that everything just keeps going with him. Is the government weak or do they trust in him? Mad he hasn’t been impeached

Maduro? He is a dictator. He stayed on after loosing the elections. Biden put a bounty on him on criminal charges but now the democrats seemed to have forgotten about all this because it is Trump is in power and is him doing this.

dottiehens · 06/01/2026 15:42

This is from Erik Adam’s ex NYC Mayor and a Democrat Facebook page.
“ On January 10, 2025, the Biden-Harris administration put a $25 million bounty on Nicolás Maduro for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
Public safety is not a political game.
You do not label someone a narco-dictator one year and then pretend he is no longer a threat the next simply because a different president is in office. That is cynical and irresponsible.
Maduro’s drugs have killed thousands of Americans and continue to endanger our children. Imagine being the parents of 2-year-old Nicholas Feliz Dominici, who died from fentanyl poisoning in a Bronx daycare, and watching this political theater.
America is safer today because Maduro is no longer in power.
Welcome to New York, Nicolás.”

No, Putin confirmed to Israel's ex PM that Russia would not kill Zelensky, and that implies they were not planning to capture him either.

Trump has pretty much gone against everything the Biden administration did though. Look at the DOGE investigations. Constant criticism about Ukraine policy and goes against that. Investigations against Obama, investigations against democrat funders.

How do you explain the assassination attempts then?

It's fkn terrifying. Now he's banging on about Greenland. The man is unhinged.
And what's scary is it doesn't seem like anyone could stop him? So he can just break the law, do whatever he wants abd the rest of the world will just sit there?
Obviously Venezuela was a sitting duck for him as Maduro was very unpopular so there wont be much resistance... but its terrifying for what this means regarding his power.
Trying to take Greenland could start WW3 or at least it very much should do if anyone's got any actual decency and any international law means anything

Feel free to say I am wrong and evidence your claims... but you say he stayed on after losing elections, but were there not something like 95 other countries there witnessing elections and saying it all went smoothly? And the US then said that exit polls showed he lost, but I thought exit polls were not permitted there?

See the journalist I linked above - are you saying she is lying?

Are you Venezuelan?

Also... the UN has condemned the capture because it goes strikingly against internationally law, and legal justification ie the US side hasn't been provided (as far as I know) and what this means is unpredictability. Can larger states now take over smaller countries and capture their leaders without UN agreement? If so we are looking at a more dangerous lawless world than before all this, surely? "He is a dictator" is not sufficient as anyone and everyone is being called a dictator nowadays when it suits.

I've not seen one single person suggest Maduro isn't a piece of shit.. hats not the issue and you know it
It's why Trump thinks he had the authority to do that and now to run the country for them
Why should that be in his power?

People keep saying he wasn't very popular there. The evidence from Venezuela so far (Maduro's son addressing a full parliament, statements by the VP acting P, statements from normal people and journalists) does not seem to suggest any happiness that this has happened, and the journalist upthread was saying that all parties including opposition (other than a tiny outlier) are outraged that the US has done this.

I agree things are a bit terrifying though.

Yet Trump pardoned a man who brought hundreds of tonnes of cocaine into the US.

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know is that the UN has condemned what has happened with Maduro for going against international law - do you agree with the UN?

"Putin said it so it must be true..."

According to you, even the stuff that Putin didn't say but you imagined must be true too.

One of the primary objectives of the assault on Kyiv was the capture of the president and the installation of a puppet regime. The Americans were sufficiently concerned that they offered Zelensky a flight out. Russian troops failed to capture a key airfield which thwarted their plans for a ten day finish.

At diplomatic levels what Putin said was accepted - there is a video of Zelensky saying he was relieved according to the Israeli PM - that is what I was referring to. Are you saying that the Israeli ex PM was lying?

The Americans were sufficiently concerned that they offered Zelensky a flight out not sure this is relevant to what we are discussing, but I note what you say

Ay? I haven't said that Zelensky and his wife have been captured. I've evidenced that assassination attempts were made on Zelensky.

Yes, I agree that Trump and the US have broken international law, invaded another country and kidnapped it's current leader to hold hostage so they can make a grab for the natural resources. I am disappointed that Britain's statement was far too wishy washy on this.

By doing this Trump has made the world less safe.

Why are you unable to see that people are very worried. Because the Post WW2 settlement has been blown up by Trump.

It is this that has kept China and Putin in check.

There are bad rulers all over the world. Unless a state is attacked , to invade a country and kidnap its head if state is illegal. And extremely dangerous .

We are now much nearer to WW3. Trump does not give a toss about Venezuela. Or anyone. He is insane.

And his government are incompetent nut jobs who are there solely because of blind loyalty . So give it a rest. Venezuela is likely to become a blood bath as a result of this.

I think he was binge watching Jack Ryan (same way Hegseth has been using Dark Wolf as a guide) And his psychological profile is incapable of seeing sense or admitting error.

Lemonade and Jack Ryan! I laughed ruefully. One small step for Maduro, one giant leap towards wwIII.

A politician lying? Is the Pope Catholic?

Even if Putin did say that to him, Putin is a pathological liar. He's a former KGB officer for goodness sake.
