What part of transition you do not get. Plus, how do think Venezuelans could have been liberated. Do you even care? I think you just do not.

By not installing an American puppet (Trump said she was okay because of a “willingness” to do whatever he wants), and actually putting in the opposition leader who is popular? By actually listening to the will of Venezuelans who live in Venezuela? One of my best friends is trapped on the ground there due to Trump’s illegal actions so that’s a pretty shite thing to say to me. But hey, bad faith arguer gonna bad faith argue.

You do not even know what Maduro put my friends through so a pretty shitty thing to say to me too.

The latest News Agents podcast summed it up quite well:

Point 1. It's about oil

Point 2. (just as significant) it'll put European states, especially the UK and France which are permanent members of the UN security council in a real bind: they will have to unequivocally turn their backs on Trump, or forever shut up about Ukraine (the bingo card will be complete if the US claims self-defence as legal justification)

Do you want a medal? Go outside Mumsnet and your echo chamber and see how you look with your opinions.

Edited

She will still look like someone who is prepared to back her argument/opinion with facts…in MN or not

@dottiehens Your bad faith argument gets worse with every post. Excellent attempt to move the goalposts: Exactly what shitty thing did I say to you? If I did, I recommend you report my post and good luck to you. You accused me of not caring. I said you’ve been arguing in bad faith, and you have. I never even said you didn’t care, though it would arguably have been a fair response after your “do you want a medal” comment. I’m not getting into an argument over whose friends suffered more under Maduro, because those aren’t my stories to share and because I would consider it incredibly crass and disrespectful of what they’ve gone through. Have a nice day because I’m done talking to someone who wants to argue endlessly without sources.

And Trump et al will definitely curate the reserves mindfully with climate harm reduction in mind 🤔

We need to use oil and gas. The climate will change regardless.

Why point I am missing exactly?

I’m not repeating myself. I can explain it to you but not understand it for you 🤷‍♀️

I don’t get my sense of self worth from debating random middle aged women on MN. I don’t know enough about geopolitical situation in Venezuela to make educated comment (nor do most) however I was pointing out that a cursory glance at the reaction of the people of Venezuela should hopefully be a simple enough indication that your bitter and twisted hate for Trump is clouding your judgement re a very obvious fact this was a fantastic move. Zero civilian lives lost all USA military personnel unharmed it was a fantastic operation.

Yep. Attempted ageist insult from you aside (what’s wrong with being middle aged or a woman?), my “bitter and twisted hate for [Jeffrey Epstein’s close friend]” means… I include sources for all my arguments. Where was your source for calling us all communists, by the way?

Also, there are dead civilians from this unannounced and illegal operation:
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/03/world/americas/venezuela-airstrike-civilian-deaths.html

Such a fantastic operation, in your words. What was it Pete Hegseth said? Oh yes, that Maduro “fucked around and found out.” I guess those dead civilians did, too?

I’m not making an insult to you personally, maybe you’re lovely in person, but I find this argument disgusting.

Wilman Gonzalez carries the furniture he managed to save from his home in Catia La Mar, Venezuela, after it got blown up during the airstrikes. His aunt, Rosa Gonzalez, 80, who lived with him, died during the strike.

Venezuelan Official Says at Least 40 People Were Killed in U.S. Attack

The official said the dead included civilians and military personnel. At least one of the civilians was killed in a U.S. airstrike outside of Caracas, according to her family.

When were the UN likely to get around to doing anything in Venezuela?

Well lucky for Venezuela, an orange lunatic has killed 40 civilians, is going to grab their oil (which no one actually wants ) and is ignoring the legally elected government, currently in opposition and install a puppet regime instead.

Putin and the Chinese government can’t believe their luck .

Happy day 👍

Exactly! They think that dictators can be asked to leave by singing peaceful songs it seems. Do they know how many people died in the hands of Maduro? Did they care? Did they care about the crude oil before yesterday?
The most ridiculous thing is people trust what is left of the regime declares.

My point about the UN isn't so much about what the UN itself would have done or not done, but about how this 'special operation' in Venezuela will have to force the UK and France to declare their position - which inevitably puts them in a very very difficult position.
The diplomatic pay off is clear: it'll be a way to finally neutralise Europe and the perfect Christmas gift for Vlad (on time for the Russian Orthodox Christmas too!)

Regime changed worked in Germany after ww2

If a foreign power kidnapped Trump for trial in their own country I wonder how many Americans would be out on the streets saying it was the most free they had felt in ages? I suspect quite a few.

Can we do that please?

shuddacuddadidnt · 04/01/2026 13:56

If, as a pp said "we need oil and gas", then Guyana, with its vast gas reserves, must be quaking in it boots.

Countries don't have to take over sovereign nations to satisfy their energy needs.

Interesting point: yes, it worked thanks to massive investment allowing the country to rebuild very quickly.

Chefpig · 04/01/2026 14:14

The strike on Venezuela that this man ordered killed hundreds of people. He should he rotting in prison for war crimes and for manslaughter. How he is getting away with it?

FunMustard · 04/01/2026 14:49

Too few people in the USA have watched Back to the Future 2 and it shows.

This man is a demented lunatic. I can't watch it because I will implode with impotent rage.

OonaStubbs · 04/01/2026 14:53

If what Trump has done is so bad, why are Venezuelan people celebrating?

40 civilians did lose their life. It's unfortunate and a tragedy. From their perspective it's an unfortunate consequence and side effects of a targeted military operation. For example the Dresden bombings killed civilians as well unfortunately.

War crimes require something more specific, like directly and intentionally targeting civilians. The USA is not party to the international criminal court. A sitting US president cannot be prosecuted and also SCOTUS have ruled that a president is immune for official acts they undertake.

What I ideally want to see is FDI come in, investment in the infrastructure of economy improve, oil output increase. Tax money raised in Venezuela and the lives of the average citizen improve.

why do you assume all videos of what you see are celebrating? Ive seen fake videos celebrating world cup lol making out its for this. I’ve seen videos of people furious too, what’s your point? I’m old enough to remember videos of Iraq and Libya and people celebrating? Didn’t end well. How about the the sick demented dictator saying it’s for oil? They lie and people believe the same old lies. It never seems to end.

Hundreds? Reports are 40 and mostly were Maduro”s bodyguards. Happy to see where you got that info.
