Temu Tat…

PinkPonyClubb · 03/01/2026 07:36

Does anyone else get annoyed by Temu gifts that break?

My young child is continually gifted Temu gifts from family members for birthdays and Christmas.

They are cheaply made and don’t last - two examples an aeroplane that wing broke when my child caught it’s side on a wooden floor while playing with it. A car that’s wheel snapped of when it travelled down a ramp.

And the latest - a light gun that batteries containers has smashed after being knocked of the table.

I know there has been a few knocks but these are children toys. So fed up of my 3 year old becoming upset because there toys are broken.

Please stop buying my child cheap tat.

Anyone else?

Who buys it? Could you suggest an alternative to them even if it’s something like a contribution to an experience or are they not close enough for that to feel doable? Only things my kids have been given from Temu are massive packs of paint pains and things like wood Christmas decorations to decorate and those have been fine so maybe an alternative is to suggest art/craft supplies?

PinkPonyClubb · 03/01/2026 16:17

MIL who never asks what any of the grandchildren want. Also SIL. It drives me nuts!

I hate it. I think my Mum is addicted to Temu and it makes me so mad the money she wastes.

Brefugee · 03/01/2026 16:42

assuming this isn't the first time: send a photo to the person who sent the gift. Tell them that your child is upset they have to bin the toy.

When it comes time for gift suggestions, remind them what happened?

Whoneedsanamesuggestion · 03/01/2026 16:43

I would hate that too. In my family, it used to be amazon tat. I did actually ask my family to please avoid the weird brands on amazon or just not buy from there at all if possible. I did get some jibes tbh, but at least we didn't get anymore absolute crap from amazon!

ItsDarkNow · 03/01/2026 16:43

I’d be concerned about safety of toys bought on Temu. Maybe tell them you won’t be giving them to your child.

PolkaDotPorridge · 03/01/2026 16:46

I despair of those who use Shein and Temu. Unsafe, unethical crap!

BettysRoasties · 03/01/2026 16:47

Are you sure it’s from Temu and not Amazon. Both basically sell the same stuff on some levels.

But have a word with the gifter if you think it will work. Ask for books instead.

Though I’ve got things form Argos that have barely lasted a few days as a toy and things from Amazon/Temu still going strong a year later. Some temu items are from local shops hobby craft is on there and sell there paint cheaper on temu than they do in store

Anothercoffeex · 03/01/2026 16:48

I use temu, Im poor and I need to live.

ClickCait · 03/01/2026 16:48

A lot of them wouldn't even pass proper UK safety testing either.

I know someone who's bought us cheap Temu stuff for our kids a couple of times and while I appreciate the thought, I always dread the inevitable moment when it breaks or doesn't go together the way it's supposed to. They often give gifts unannounced so it's not like you can make suggestions in the run up to birthdays and things to head them off.

I've spirited stuff away when it's been ignored for a little while to dispose of it or said "ooh, it needs batteries, we'll set it up later" then stuffed it in the back of a cupboard in the hope they'll forget.

Lots of local shops are on there now it’s not even all straight from China crap anymore so the judgement from people is hilarious.

Though let’s face it most local shops are still importing everything just charging more.

SlashBeef · 03/01/2026 16:56

It's all straight up shit isn't it. My mother is obsessed and it's all destined for landfill. So depressing.

How dare you? Don’t you know us plebs (Im also poor!) are only allowed to use charity shops, Vinted and eBay? That or we can darn our Asda socks when they get holes?!
Haven't you heard of door to door begging? We could fashion our own dresses from donated quilt covers! We can’t possibly have things from SHEIN or Temu or tiktok shop (which is where I buy all my shoes and they’re always ace btw ;)) because people who’d choose to not shop their think absolutely everything they sell is tat! I have to be honest and say I have loved the clothes I have had from Temu and Im complemented quite a bit on them.

I have a friend who is relatively wealthy and her vibe is Rockett St George/quirky designers and she loved my SHEIN prints so much she bought some despite being able to afford whatever she wants within reason.

Temu slave labour sweat shops … robbing a Chinese child of thier childhood, so yours can cheap shite.

Not to mention harvesting your Card details …

WhatNoRaisins · 03/01/2026 17:29

I don't like it either. I've never been snobby about brands but there is so much poor quality and unsafe crap out there now I'm being a lot more selective.

Much like the tech you're currently using to post 🤨

My MIL bought my children’s bday gifts from there. Absolutely shocking quality. They were actually dangerous id say. A total of 6 transformers (we’ve twins) all in the bin within 24 hours. I was so annoyed as we asked for vouchers knowing that she would buy crap….. yet here we are!

PinkPonyClubb · 03/01/2026 19:47

MIL is very wealthy so it’s not a money issue.

SIL is not wealthy.

I wouldn’t and don’t expect either to spend a significant amount of money on gifts. I’ve had maternity clothes and kids craft bits from shein and Temu so although I should consider the ethical side of these shops - as lots of you have rightly pointed out I haven’t before and this post wasn’t about that.

My issue is, given the amount of gifts, they must be spending between £10- £30 on Temu and it doesn’t last! It’s cheaply made and then there is tears. Surely there’s loads more they can but for that price. But yes you’re also right we need to consider the ethics too.

i shopped at Temu for the first and last time before Christmas. A couple of small gifts for DC’s birthday, couple of tops for me and scrapbooking/hobby supplies. Most advertised as UK based for delivery.
A large bag of stuff arrived after Christmas and I wasn’t expecting top quality stuff for the price of the tops but what I got was absolute shite. Apparently I can only return one item with free shipping and would have to pay for the rest.
The tops are nothing like the photos, I usually shop for clothes in charity shops and now I realise that buying online and cheap isn’t always the best way.
I’m at fault but I got sucked in by all the offers that I would supposedly get for free with my order, none of which turned up.
The hobby supplies were crap on the whole. All shipped from China as I tracked them rather than the UK warehouse. Never again, lesson learned!

Maybe have a little think about this. Just a tiny bit deeper. You’re so close to getting it.

Whataboutism at its absolute finest…

A now essential piece of tech which the PP will likely have for years is very different to crap off TEMU which is never used as it is so utterly appalling quality. We all have to live under capitalism whether we like it or not but we can choose when and how to engage with it.

Kd96 · 03/01/2026 20:13

Growing up our parents would buy 30, 40, 50 POUNDLAND 'gifts' usually cheap grainy chocolate and sweets, cheapy make up items, toys (if you can call them that).. Because 'lots of little presents is so much better than one big one'. Bullshit! Both me and my siblings have nipped that shit in the bud with them and our DCs gifts!
I'm not an ungrateful shit but at 13 years old and type 1 diabetes, 30 chocolate bars and sweet tubes is a kick in the teeth 🤷‍♀️
